False data for Tamkeen support: many face trial
Bahrain's Public Prosecution has referred a number of Bahraini defendants to trial for submitting false data online to the Social Insurance Organization (SIO) and the Labour Fund (Tamkeen), and forging private documents to illegally obtain over BD230,000 from both entities. This came as a result of Tamkeen's ongoing collaboration with relevant authorities to monitor and report misuse of its support programmes, said a statement. The Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution directorate received reports from Tamkeen and the SIO regarding the use of fake documents submitted online to illegally obtain funds for the purpose of employee wage support, it said. Tamkeen commended the collaborative efforts and the prompt action of the relevant government authorities in reporting suspected cases diligently. Gaza Humanitarian Foundation reports Hamas attack on aid workers
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation on Wednesday said a vehicle carrying aid workers was attacked by Hamas militants. At least five people on the bus – which was carrying more than two dozen local Palestinians working with the US-backed initiative – were killed and several injured, according to a statement from the GHF. Several workers are believed to have been taken hostage. "We condemn this heinous and deliberate attack in the strongest possible terms," the statement said. "These were aid workers. Humanitarians. Fathers, brothers, sons and friends, who were risking their lives every day to help others." The GHF said it holds Hamas fully responsible for the attack, adding that the militant group has been threatening aid workers and civilians seeking assistance daily. It called on the international community to condemn Hamas. The foundation said that despite the attack, it would continue to distribute aid in Gaza. Israel eased an 11-week blockade on Gaza last month, but only a "teaspoon" of aid has entered the enclave, according to the GHF. The controversial US and Israeli-backed private organisation is overhauling aid distribution in the strip. Protected by private US security contractors, the foundation has set up aid distribution sites around the enclave. The US and Israel have claimed that the initiative is aimed at keeping aid out of the hands of Hamas, which they say has been stealing aid. Despite claims that the initiative will allow aid to be dispensed more securely, scores of Gazans have been killed at distribution sites, with local authorities blaming Israeli soldiers for firing on those queueing for assistance.

Former Lebanese economy minister Amin Salam arrested over corruption allegations
Former Lebanese economy minister Amin Salam was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation into alleged financial crimes, a senior judicial source has told The National. Mr Salam was arrested by order of Judge Jamal Hajjar, Lebanon's top prosecutor at the Court of Cassation. The former minister is being investigated for alleged falsification, embezzlement of public funds and blackmailing insurance companies. He was questioned several times in May by Judge Hajjar and has been placed under house arrest and issued with a travel ban. The investigation also involves Mr Salam's brother and business partner, Karim Salam, who has been in detention since April, the judicial source said. The former minister's arrest follows a complaint filed two months ago by Lebanese MP Farid Boustany, who chairs the parliamentary economy committee, over allegations of 'embezzlement, extortion and waste of public funds'. The committee alleges Mr Salam awarded overpriced contracts to foreign firms for services that did not justify the costs, and misappropriated funds from the Insurance Companies Contribution Fund, which is overseen by the Economy Ministry. At a press conference in March, Mr Salam denied any wrongdoing and slammed what he described as 'attacks' against him. He denounced entrenched 'mafias' who opposed reforms, and accused Mr Boustany of having personal motives behind the complaint. In an interview with The National in January, weeks before a new government was installed, Mr Salam called for an end to the old corrupt political class, which he described as 'a virus in the body, fighting back in every way possible'. 'They see [government] as a deal where they want the biggest share and profit,' he said. On June 2, the acting head of the State Litigation Department, Judge Claude Ghanem, filed a complaint against Mr Salam with Judge Hajjar, following a request from current Economy Minister Amer Bsat, Lebanese daily L'Orient-Le Jour reported.
