Cubs Must Upgrade This Position at Trade Deadline to Remain Contenders

There is no arguing that the Chicago Cubs are a top-five team in MLB this season.
Entering Monday, Chicago was 54-36 and had a four-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. Despite injuries to both Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga, most things have gone right for the Cubs.
There is, though, one position on the diamond that is in need of a major upgrade if the Cubs want to remain true World Series contenders in the National League.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 3: Matt Shaw #6 of the Chicago Cubs celebrates his game-winning sacrifice fly in the 10th inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Wrigley Field on July 3, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 3: Matt Shaw #6 of the Chicago Cubs celebrates his game-winning sacrifice fly in the 10th inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Wrigley Field on July 3, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.Third base has been a bit of an issue for Chicago this season. It has started six different players at the position, and none of those have produced nearly as much as they need to. It's minus-0.5 Wins Above Average at the position ranks 22nd of 30 teams.
That includes rookie and Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw. Shaw made the opening day roster but struggled mightily and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. He was recalled shortly after and after a blistering hot first few weeks back in the major leagues, he has since cooled off again.
Entering Monday, Shaw's average was just .207 with a .581 OPS. He has played stellar defense at the hot corner, but the bat is just not progressing in the way the front office hoped it would.
The combination of Shaw's struggles and the Cubs success makes it utterly important that the front office goes and makes a trade for an offense-first third baseman prior to the conclusion of the trade deadline.
Those options seem to be limited this season, but there are a couple like the Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez and the Marlins' Otto Lopez.
Either of those two would be a major upgrade over Shaw and would make a Chicago lineup that already leads MLB in run differential even scarier.

Paul Skenes gives Livvy Dunne a helping hand as they stun at MLB All-Star Game red carpet
Paul Skenes' prowess as a boyfriend might match what he can do on the mound. The Pirates pitcher stopped on the MLB All-Star Game red carpet to help his girlfriend, social media influencer and former LSU gymnast, Olivia 'Livvy' Dunne, re-lace her heel after it apparently came undone. The right-handed flamethrower dropped to one knee as cameras caught him assisting Dunne with her heel before the two continued on. The pair walked the red carpet outside Truist Park in Atlanta ahead of the All-Star Game, which Skenes is starting on the mound for the National League. Skenes sported a grey-looking David Alan suit that featured a light blue collar along with a pair of aviator sunglasses. Dunne arrived in a navy blue sleeveless Silvia Tcherassi dress that she paired with white lace-up heels. 3 National League pitcher Paul Skenes (30) of the Pittsburgh Pirates and social media influencer Livvy Dunne pose for a photo on the red carpet before the 2025 MLB All Star Game at Truist Park. Brett Davis-Imagn Images Dunne shared the MLB social media post on her Instagram story that featured the words, 'Gentleman Paul Skenes.' The 22-year-old also shared the footage on her TikTok page and captioned the post, 'Big P to the rescue,' along with a flaming heart emoji. Skenes and Dunne have been dating for two years after meeting while athletes at LSU. 3 Paul Skenes #30 of the Pittsburgh Pirates walks on the red carpet with his girlfriend Livvy Dunne ahead of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. He earned his second consecutive All-Star start, though he has only recorded four wins on a struggling Pirates squad. 'Yes [wins and losses matter]. They do,' Skenes told MLB Network on the red carpet. 'It's not a perfect stat. It definitely matters because I think it's indicative of whether you're in the game when the game is being decided, I guess. If you're helping your team win or lose, you're probably in the game at that time, I think.' Skenes said that he's always tinkering with his pitches during the course of the season since spring training. Dunne graduated from LSU in December and hinted that she could look to do some acting in the future. 3 Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Livvy Dunne walk the red carpet during the 2025 All-Star Red Carpet Show presented by Deer Park at Battery Ave on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. 'I've really enjoyed watching him, but right now, I'm also going to try to do more performing arts stuff myself. I've always loved to perform as a gymnast, whether it's diving into acting or some kind of other art, I've always been passionate about.'

A legendary — and briny — solution to Max Fried's blister pickle
Access the Yankees beat like never before Don't miss Greg Joyce's text messages from The Bronx and beyond — he's giving Sports+ subscribers the inside buzz on the Yankees. Sign Up Now Every now and again, there will be a pitcher somewhere in the major leagues who develops one of the simplest yet most aggravating ailments a pitcher can get: a blister on one of the fingers of his throwing hand. Sometimes, especially if you catch them early, blisters are an easily fixable malady: a pin prick, a Band-Aid, maybe some Neosporin, a few days off. Sometimes it gets a little more complicated than that — maybe there's some blood trapped in it, and it'll cost 10 or 15 days on the injured list to avoid infection. The most famous blister in New York City at the moment sits on the index finger of Max Fried's left hand. It cost him in his last start, Saturday against the Cubs, when it probably helped the Cubs get four runs off him (three earned) and certainly chased him from the game after just three innings. 'It's getting better, definitely down,' Fried said Monday in Atlanta, at the All-Star festivities. 'If there was a time to get it, this was the one.'
