The Importance of Vitamin B12 for Overall Health Written By Eng Fatemah Almusawi
Vitamins are essential for our bodies to maintain good health [1]. They facilitate many of the vital functions which our bodies perform [1]. Vitamins are abundant in many of the foods we are used to eating everyday. However, in cases where a person is not getting their required dose, many vitamins are available in supplement form. One of the most important families of vitamins are the B vitamins which allow for the body to process food into energy [2]. Some of the main sources for gaining B vitamins are animal proteins as well as some types of vegetables like peas and beans [2].
R=5-deoxyadenosyl, Me, OH, CN Chemical Structure of Vitamin B12 [3]
Vitamin B12 is one of the essential vitamins within the Vitamin B family. Vitamin B12 can be produced in the lab as a medication and supplement through a chemical process. It is commonly referred to as cobalamin [4]. This is due to the chemical makeup of the vitamin, It has a very complex structure made up of a cobalt atom at the center with a corrin ring [5]. B12 plays a critical role in the formation of red blood cells and cell metabolism, as well as the production of DNA [6]. The absorption of vitamin B12 starts with releasing the B12 bound to the protein in the food we eat. This occurs when the food is mixed with saliva in the mouth and binds to the haptocorrin protein found in the saliva [4]. Furthermore, hydrochloric acid in the stomach helps to release more of the B12 vitamin found in the food [4] which will then be digested and absorbed by the body.
Most people with a varied diet do not have an issue getting their required daily dose (2.4 micrograms for adults) of vitamin B12 [6]. However, since B12 is mostly found in animal proteins such as fish, as well as red and white meats, people who may be vegetarians often struggle to get the required dose [4]. In addition, as people grow older, their bodies start having issues with vitamin B12 absorption which can lead to a deficiency [1]. Having a vitamin B12 deficiency can cause various health issues, the most common of which is megaloblastic anemia [4]. It also reduces the number of white and red blood cells in the body [4] which can have a cascading effect leading to other health problems. Furthermore, having a vitamin B12 deficiency can also have physical indicators like general fatigue, pale skin, and weight loss [4]. Numbness or a tingling feeling in a person's hands or feet can also be a sign of low vitamin B12, and should be taken seriously to avoid irreversible damage [4].
Although most people receive an adequate amount of vitamin B12 through having a varied diet, it is also available in other forms for those who have diet restrictions or those whose bodies are unable to absorb vitamin B12 from foods. One of the most common alternative methods is through taking supplements. For those who's bodies do not absorb vitamins well, a supplement can be effective since the vitamin found in supplements is already released [4] which makes it easier for the body to absorb the required amount. Furthermore, supplements can have higher doses of vitamin B12 [4], and since it is water soluble, the body will absorb the required amount and pass the remaining amount which it cannot store [8]. Injections are also another option for treating vitamin B12 deficiency as they bypass any barriers for absorption [4].

Overall, having a well balanced diet is the easiest way to make sure that the body is getting the required amount of not only vitamin B12, but all other essential vitamins needed for critical bodily functions. And in cases where a varied diet is not possible, or where absorption from food is ineffective, other options exist so that a person is still able to get the vitamins they need and have a healthy life. When Is ‘Karate Kid: Legends' Coming To Streaming?

Karate Kid: Legends, starring Ralph Macchio, Jackie Chan and Ben Wang, is new in theaters. When will it be available to stream at home? Rated PG-13, Karate Kid: Legends is the sixth film in the action franchise, which began with The Karate Kid in 1984 starring Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita as Mr. Miyagi, William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence and Martin Kove as John Kreese. The film was followed by The Karate Kid Part II in 1986, The Karate Kid Part III in 1989 and The Next Karate Kid in 1994. After that, Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith starred as Mr. Han and Dre Parker in 2010's remake of The Karate Kid. Then, in 2018, Macchio, Zabka and later on, Kove, returned to the franchise with the YouTube Red-turned-Netflix series Cobra Kai, which ran for six seasons until earlier this year. Karate Kid: Legends opens in theaters in wide release on Friday. The official summary for the film reads, 'When kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) relocates to New York City with his mother (Ming-Na Wen) to attend a prestigious new school, he finds solace in a new friendship with a classmate and her father. But his newfound peace is short-lived after he attracts unwanted attention from a formidable local karate champion. 'Driven by a desire to defend himself, Li embarks on a journey to enter the ultimate karate competition. Guided by the wisdom of his kung fu teacher, Mr. Han and the legendary Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso, Li merges their unique styles to prepare for an epic martial arts showdown.' Currently, the only way you can see Karate Kid: Legends is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes. When Karate Kid: Legends arrives on the home entertainment scene, its first stop will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand. Sony Picture Entertainments, which is the studio behind Karate Kid: Legends, generally has a one-month to six-week window between the time its films open in theaters and arrive on PVOD. For example, Sony's Venom: The Last Dance opened in theaters on Oct. 25, 2024, and debuted on PVOD about six weeks later on Dec. 10. More recently, however, Sony's horror thriller Until Dawn opened in theaters on April 25 and debuted just under a month later on PVOD on May 23. If Karate Kid: Legends follows the same one-month to six-week release pattern as the above-mentioned titles, then viewers can expect the film to debut on PVOD anytime between July 1 and July 15 since new film releases on PVOD typically come out on Tuesdays. Generally, PVOD titles are available for purchase or rent on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. Since Sony Pictures Entertainment has a deal in place with the platform for its streaming video on demand debuts, Karate Kid: Legends will first appear on Netflix. Typically it takes three to four months from the time a Sony film opens in theaters to the time it arrives on Netflix. For example, Venom: The Last Dance, which opened in theaters on Oct. 25, 2024, and arrived on Netflix four months later, on Feb. 25. More recently, the Sony horror thriller Heart Eyes, which opened in theaters on Feb. 7, made its debut on Netflix just over three months later on May 8. If Karate Kid: Legends follows the same three- to four-month release pattern, then viewers can expect the film to arrive on Netflix anytime between Aug. 29 and Sept. 26. Directed by Jonathan Entwistle and also starring Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, Wyatt Oleff and Aramis Knight, Karate Kid: Legends opens in theaters on Friday.

Maryland police frustrated after teen accused in more than 100 car break-ins released within hours of arrest

A Maryland teen who allegedly broke into 121 cars in a single night was released within five hours of his arrest and local authorities say they are furious because the state considers the crimes to be "lower level," so consequences are not expected. The unidentified 16-year-old boy was arrested last week by the Laurel Police Department after it received multiple reports of break-ins on May 4. The crimes took place in Laurel and nearby Howard County. Surveillance footage captured three teens roving around in a stolen car and smashing the windows of vehicles they came across, police said. "I have little hope there will be further accountability for him due to this broken system," Laurel Police Chief Russ Hamill told reporters. "Due to this gap in concern for his safety, and the public's safety." Fox News Digital has reached out to the police department. At the teen suspect's home, authorities found nearly 20 sets of car keys, credit cards, and other evidence that linked him to the car break-ins, Hamill said. Since the teen didn't have a criminal record, the state Department of Juvenile Services characterized the offenses as lower-level crimes and allowed him to be released, Hamill said. "I would offer well over 100 cases in one night, gives you a pretty good record," Hamill said. "These were not violent crimes, as if that lessens the impact on those 121 victims." "Yes, five hours after we were at his house, he was released back into the community, back into the environment that allowed him to be out roaming the streets in all of these counties, late at night and in the early morning, doing these crimes to begin with," he added. Two other teens have been identified as the suspect's accomplices, Hamill said, adding that they were expected to be arrested soon. "People need to be held accountable for this," he said. The night after the teen was released, there were reports of 17 car break-ins, Hamill said, though he stopped short of blaming them on the suspect. "We're not going to lay every theft from auto in the region on him and his group, but I will note we had 17 the next night," Hamill said.
