Virtuosic guitarist Ty Segall finds a new sweet spot on his laid-back 'Possession'

Much of the virtuosic guitarist Ty Segall's prolific career has been characterized by a sludgy, almost primal, intensity. But his 16th LP crystalizes a new, less-aggressive era for the indie rocker, as he trades in his additive synths for strings and horns — all while maintaining his singular garage-psych.
'Possession' isn't Segall's first album to reel in his trademark heaviness. Following the release of his 2021 record 'Harmonizer' — the apex of a Black Sabbath-inspired, electronics-assisted sound he had for years — the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has mellowed out and gone more analog in the myriad solo projects he's released since.
There was his 2022 mostly acoustic album, 'Hello, Hi,' as well as his instrumental 'Love Rudiments,' an avant-garde, percussion-focused record, which he dropped less than a year ago. But with 'Possession,' Segall seems to have found a kind of sweet spot that balances force with restraint in this new phase of his discography.
His signature psychedelic sound and distorted guitar solos are still there, like in 'Shining' and the album's title track. But the songs are also subdued and refined, with a surprising arrangement of strings and horns on songs like 'Skirts of Heaven' and 'Shoplifter.'
Despite that addition of new instruments, there's a kind of back-to-basics sound to the record, bringing to mind the soulful, easy-listening rock bands of the '70s like Cheap Trick and Steely Dan.
This album also marks a lyrical shift, thanks in part to the fact that he co-wrote it with his longtime friend, documentary filmmaker Matt Yoka. He brings a clear narrative framework to Segall's poetic, sometimes opaque, writing style.
'Neighbors' daughter sentenced dead / her toes directed downward / The washer woman a victim too / the village's obsession,' Segall croons of witch trials on 'Possession,' the only song on the album which Yoka wrote solo.
That emphasis on storytelling also brings a kind of depth to the songs, which often wade into poignant themes like, mortality and success, topics not often overtly broached on Segall's previous records.
'What you gonna do when the money's gone / And everyone you know is dead,' Segall sings on 'Fantastic Tomb.' 'When you're standing naked on the lawn / You think about the life you led.'
And while he brings in highbrow instruments like cellos, pianos and trumpets, there is plenty of discordance. It matches the existential dread of songs like 'Buildings' and 'Alive.' And yet, the album maintains a kind of laid-back sensibility in comparison to much of Segall's earlier work.
Last year while promoting his 14th solo LP, 'Three Bells,' Segall told The Associated Press that he was trying to be less prolific. He's since recorded an album under a new band with Color Green's Corey Madden, Freckle, as well as two more solo LP's, including 'Possession.'
Segall's failed resolution is to the benefit of his fans, even as he pushes himself into creative directions he's yet to go before.

Japanese pop idol Kenshin Kamimura convicted of indecent assault in Hong Kong

J-pop star Kenshin Kamimura arrives at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts to hear verdict over his indecent assault case in Hong Kong, on Wednesday. By KANIS LEUNG Japanese pop idol Kenshin Kamimura was found guilty of a charge of indecent assault on a female interpreter in a Hong Kong court Wednesday before some emotional fans. Kamimura, a former member of a Japanese boy group named ONE N' ONLY, was arrested in the southern Chinese city in March. In the same month, his contract was terminated due to a serious compliance violation. In April, he pleaded not guilty. He allegedly touched the interpreter's thigh repeatedly during a celebratory dinner at a restaurant. During the trial last month, the interpreter testified through a live video link that Kamimura had invited her to a bathroom elsewhere. After she dismissed the request and told him she had a boyfriend, Kamimura continued to touch her thigh, she said. The defense argued the interpreter exaggerated her claims and the alleged bathroom invitation might not have been based on improper motives. Judge Peter Yu handed down the conviction Wednesday, saying Kamimura touched the intrepreter in a caressing nature that implicitly carried a sexual undertone and had indecent intent. After the verdict was announced, a few of Kamimura's fans wept in the courtroom. But Kamimura looked relieved when the judge issued a fine of 15,000 Hong Kong dollars (about $1,900) and no prison term. The maximum penalty for the charge is 10 years of imprisonment. The singer's supporters, including some from Japan and mainland China, formed long lines inside the court building to secure a seat in the main courtroom before the hearing. Others from mainland China who attended said they were not fans but wanted to learn more about the case, especially after seeing criticism of the female interpreter online. University student Betty Zhong from the Chinese city of Shenzhen said she was not a Kamimura fan but had attending the court hearings in Hong Kong because a friend likes the J-pop idol and she wanted to know what happened. She said she was surprised Kamimura was charged during a visit to Hong Kong. 'News reports are not so comprehensive. When I come here, I can understand it holistically and the explainations from both sides,' she said. Kamimura also is an actor who appeared in several TV dramas including the boys' love series 'Our Youth' and the popular drama 'Ossan's Love Returns.' © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. Britain's Royal Mail celebrates Monty Python with stamps featuring iconic sketches and characters

This photo provided by the Royal Mail on Wednesday Aug. 6, 2025 shows a Monty Python Holy Grail stamp issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film. (Royal Mail via AP) And now for something completely different: Britain's Royal Mail has issued stamps celebrating the absurdist comedy of Monty Python. The 10-stamp series announced on Thursday celebrates some of the troupe's most iconic characters and catchphrases, from 'Nudge, nudge' to 'The Lumberjack Song.' Six stamps depict scenes from the sketch-comedy TV series 'Monty Python's Flying Circus,' including 'The Spanish Inquisition,' 'The Ministry of Silly Walks," 'Dead Parrot' and 'The Nude Organist.' Another four mark the 50th anniversary of the cult classic 1975 film 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail,' including one showing the limb-losing Black Knight insisting, ''Tis but a scratch.' The stamps can be pre-ordered from Thursday and go on sale Aug. 14. Made up of Michael Palin, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Graham Chapman, Monty Python brought a unique blend of satire, surrealism and silliness to British TV screens in a series that ran from 1969 to 1974. The troupe also made several feature films, including 'And Now for Something Completely Different,' 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' and 'Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.' David Gold, Royal Mail's director of external affairs, said the collection 'honors a body of work that has shaped the comedic landscape for nearly six decades.' Palin said he was 'very glad to share a stamp with the nude organist!' The group largely disbanded in the 1980s, and Chapman died of cancer in 1989. The five surviving Pythons reunited in 2014 for a string of live stage shows. Jones died in 2020 from a rare form of dementia. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Poké-summer fun is here with Baskin-Robbins Japan's limited-time Pokémon collaboration

A new Pikachu-inspired flavor, arcade game tie-ins, and collaboration merchandise are great ways to celebrate the peak of summer right now. Baskin-Robbins Japan (known popularly as '31' in Japan) kicked off its 31 Poké Summer! Campaign on August 1. The ice cream chain teaming up with Pokémon over the summer has become an annual event for Poké-fans to look forward to, and we couldn't wait to get our hands on this year's goodies for ourselves. The main draws of the campaign are some creative Pokémon tie-ins. For instance, with purchase of a Pokémon Double Cup (Small for 51o yen [US$3.44], Regular for 610 yen), you'll receive one of 20 randomly selected stickers and one of two special yellow spoons. With purchase of a Pokémon Sundae (600 yen each), you'll receive a Frienda Pick, which is a rectangular plastic tile with a Pokémon's information for use in the Pokémon Frienda arcade game. Of course, given our unofficial motto of 'Go big or go home,' we sprung for a pricier option in the form of the Pokémon Exciting Ice Cream Box (Small) for 3,500 yen, which also comes in a Regular size for 4,140 yen. For this deal, you select nine flavors of ice cream to go home with you in special box which is in turn placed inside a Pokémon-patterned refrigerated bag. We were quite pleased by our haul when we got home and laid it all out on the table. The refrigerated bag in particular is remarkable for its two-way functionality. It initially comes as a smaller-sized bag that's a perfect fit for the Ice Cream Box. However, when you release its side buttons… …the bag transforms into a tote! This point makes it a perfect addition for all of your summer picnicking needs. Honing in on the box, it has a colorful design with Poképals old and new. We were delighted to open the lid and find a coloring page as well. Let's check out the ice cream itself now. This summer's special flavor of note is Pikachu's Toropika Soda, meant to evoke the taste of a nostalgic soda float and perfect for a hot summer day. Combining sorbet with vanilla cream, it has a refreshing base with a mix of creaminess to it. It also comes with candies in the shape of Pikachu's face that taste like white chocolate and have a crunchy texture somewhere between chocolate and ramune soda-flavored candies. All in all, everything was simply, summery sweet! The Baskin-Robbins Japan x Pokémon campaign will be around through September 3, so swing by your local branch when you need to add a boost of Poké-power to your day. On your way, you might also want to stop by several JR East train stations to earn yourself one of these giant Pokémon cards while supplies last.
