103 new flight routes approved to boost global connectivity
PUTRAJAYA: A total of 103 new flight routes, 29 increased flight frequencies and five chartered flights have been approved from various major countries in an effort to boost global connectivity in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the matter was disclosed during the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Tourism and Culture (JKPK), which he chaired here today.
The JKPK chairman said the meeting viewed that a comprehensive campaign approach up to the international level must be implemented with the full support of the government in preparation for VM2026.
Among the outlined strategies include creating demand by empowering the Malaysia Truly Asia and Cuti-Cuti Malaysia brands, joint promotions with airlines and tour operators, as well as market segmentation approaches to attract high-profile visitors from around the world.
'The government is committed to driving the tourism sector as a key catalyst for the country's economic growth in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, particularly the thrust of Rebuilding the Economy.
'This sector not only contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but also creates job opportunities and enhances the country's competitiveness in the global market,' Ahmad Zahid said in a statement today.
He said the meeting was informed of seven iconic programmes that will be organised as major attractions for VM2026, namely the Malaysia Mega Sale, Malaysia Cultural Festival, Global Meet, World Tourism Day & Conference, Official Launch of VM2026, VM2026 Year-End Sale, and the VM2026 Countdown Celebration.
In addition, he said the meeting was also briefed on the Sustainable Tourism Programme through the Greening Protocol Initiative.
'Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Selangor government will spearhead the implementation of the Greening Protocol, which encompasses low-carbon technology, green mobility, and the empowerment of urban green spaces. This aligns with the goal of positioning Malaysia as a world-class sustainable tourism destination,' he said.
To ensure the sector remains competitive, Ahmad Zahid urged all ministries and agencies to join forces with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) in driving the sector as a national agenda.
'The success of the nation's tourism can only be achieved through coordinated policies and collective, inclusive implementation,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid also called on all frontliners, especially at international entry points, to demonstrate friendliness and professionalism as the country's mini ambassadors in welcoming tourists.
'I am confident that with the joint commitment of all parties, we can make Malaysia a top global tourism destination by VM2026,' he said.

This follows the latest development on the visa issue, with a United States (US) federal court judge ruling to grant a temporary restraining order (TRO) after an application was filed by Harvard, providing relief to over 6,800 international students there. The ministry said in a statement today that it was monitoring the developments of this issue closely through Education Malaysia Washington D.C. (EMWDC). 'The decision enables international students, including Malaysian students, to continue studying without interruption for the time being. 'The ministry and EMWDC have also reached out to related sponsors and US education officials. The ministry welcomes their commitment to work together to ensure the wellbeing of our students,' the ministry said. The MOHE also reminded students to update their optional practical training information and to be careful in all action involving immigration matters. 'For now, no Malaysian student has been reported to have encountered any problems or issues with their records with the Student and Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVIS) and any withdrawal of their visas,' the ministry said. It also recommended new students for Harvard's September 2025 intake to deal directly with the university and their sponsors to obtain the latest developments before making any further decisions. The ministry reiterated Malaysia's belief that cross-border higher education was an important platform to global talent development, knowledge exchange and strategic partnerships between countries. Car boot sale puts PJ celebrations in high gear

The law graduate from Universiti Teknologi Mara Melaka makes RM200 to RM300 a day selling pre-loved clothes. 'I used to donate my clothes for recycling but after seeing friends selling pre-loved items, I started selling mine as well,' she said. Dayana sells from her car in the outdoor carpark of the business square Bistari De Kota along Jalan Teknologi 3/9 in Kota Damansara. The venue has been the spot for weekly car boot sales since 2013. It got a boost after being chosen to host celebrations marking 19 years since Petaling Jaya gained city status. Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin launched the celebrations, marking the start of 31 activities organised by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) under the theme 'Petaling Jaya Bandar Paling Bahagia'. The activities, including community programmes and competitions, are being held throughout June. Accompanying the Tengku Permaisuri in visiting the booths were Selangor Women's Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) president Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad and Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon. Mohamad Zahri said several other initiatives were kicked off during the anniversary celebrations launch. These included 'Food With Love', a new care economy programme organised by MBPJ. 'The project will see halal meals prepared at a central kitchen run by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). 'The meals will be distributed to eligible senior citizens and disabled individuals who register under MBPJ's guidelines,' he said. Mohamad Zahri highlighted that MBPJ was the first local council to introduce a senior citizens' guideline − the Senior Citizen Action Plan 2030 − to address the needs of a growing ageing population. He added that MBPJ was also the first local council in Malaysia to have set up a children's council. Mohamad Zahri said the anniversary theme was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Malaysia Madani and the First Selangor Plan. 'MBPJ has offered free training programmes since 2022. 'More than 5,000 business owners have participated in courses covering marketing, AI tools, and banking,' he said. The mayor said MBPJ had also been sending the top 10 participants for overseas educational trips annually. 'Past destinations have included Bandung, Bangkok and Vietnam. China may be the destination for this year,' he said. At the launch, Malaysia Book of Records held a presentation to recognise MBPJ for having played a leading role in setting up the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza. The three-floor recycling centre in Sungai Way Free Trade Industrial Zone was set up in collaboration with seven NGOs and professional bodies. The Eco Recycling Plaza has been officially recognised by Malaysia Book of Records as the country's first excellent-rated centre of environmental sustainability managed by a local authority.

Mohamad: Malaysia-Japan meeting paves way for training, agro-technology exchange
