Chicago Blackhawks unveil renderings of renovated Fifth Third Arena
The Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday revealed renderings on their planned expansion for the Fifth Third Arena community ice rink a short distance from the United Center.
Fifth Third Arena, at 1801 W. Jackson Blvd., first opened in 2017. It has been undergoing major renovations since May of last year.
When those renovations are complete in January 2026, Fifth Third Arena will feature more than 250,000 square feet of community hockey space, state-of-the-art training facilities, and "versatile areas for the best athletes in the world, rising stars and the next generation of players," the Blackhawks said.
"Through the Fifth Third Arena expansion, we are creating the epicenter of hockey in the Midwest," Danny Wirtz, chairman and chief executive officer of the Chicago Blackhawks, said in a news release. "This venue is where NHL superstars train alongside rising talent, creating an environment where championship dreams can take flight."
The Blackhawks expect the revamped Fifth Third Arena to welcome more than 1.5 million guests per year. The team expects the arena will help catalyze an economic boost for the Near West Side, and will serve as the Midwest's leading destination for youth and amateur hockey — with seamless connectivity to the 1901 Project development plan around the United Center.
Fifth Third Arena will also remain the official training home for the Blackhawks, and will become the permanent home for the Chicago Steel United States Hockey League team — which the Wirtz family acquired in 2023.
The Blackhawks unveiled renderings for the following features:
The Championship Arena will be one of two new rinks, with stadium-style seating, hospitality areas for 2,000 spectators, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, and exclusive party decks. This arena will be the new home of the Chicago Steel.

Boston Bruins hire former player Marco Sturm as next head coach Show Caption Hide Caption Are Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup bound? Former NHLer weighs in Former NHL winger Riley Cote explains what he loves about this Edmonton Oilers team ahead of the Western Conference Finals. Sports Seriously The Boston Bruins hired Marco Sturm as their new head coach, the team announced Thursday. Sturm replaces Jim Montgomery, who was fired in November after the team got off to an 8-9-3 start. Assistant Joe Sacco was named the interim head coach and Boston finished 33–39–10, tied for the worst record in the Eastern Conference. For the past three seasons, the 46-year-old Sturm, a native of Dingolfing, Germany, was the head coach of the American Hockey League's Ontario Reign, leading the team to a playoff appearance each season. Sturm has also been an assistant with the Los Angeles Kings and played in 938 NHL games with the San Jose Sharks. Bruins, Kings, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals and Vancouver Canucks, scoring 242 goals in his career. He scored 106 goals with 87 assists in 302 games over five seasons with the Bruins. "I'm incredibly honored to be named head coach of the Boston Bruins," Sturm said in a statement. 'I want to thank Charlie Jacobs and the Jacobs family, Cam Neely, and Don Sweeney for trusting me with this opportunity. Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans. I've felt that passion as a player, and I can't wait to be behind the bench and feel it again. I'm excited to get to work and do everything I can to help this team succeed."

NBA All-Star Game: Could Team World actually beat Team USA?
On Wednesday, NBA commissioner Adam Silver teased a potential change to the NBA All-Star Game format that could shake up the outlook of the league and reinvigorate a spectacle that's been desperately lacking competition. Appearing on Fox Sports' Breakfast Ball, Silver was asked about whether the All-Star game could adopt "the concept of USA vs. the World" — in other words pitting the NBA's best American players against its best foreign players — to which he responded with a resounding "Yes." While not official, the idea of a USA-versus-the-World All-Star game has been gaining momentum for years. The NBA first implemented this format with its Rising Stars Challenge in 2015, as the best rookies and second-year players from America faced off against their foreign counterparts. That concept remained for six years, with the two sides splitting three victories apiece before they disposed of it altogether, introducing different variations of a four-team tournament. Discussions comparing foreign basketball to the American game heightened during the Paris Olympic Games last summer as Team USA traversed one of the toughest fields of competition, and had battles with the Serbian and French National teams. Then, when the 2025 All-Star Game came around, the squads, which were selected by TNT's Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith, incorporated a semblance of American stars teaming up against foreign stars as Barkley drafted a team called the "Chuck's Global Stars". Despite that, the game lacked competitive flare and player buy-in — as it has for most of this decade — so projected changes continued to fly around. It also didn't help the NBA that the NHL, whose schedule runs parallel, had success with the 4 Nations Face-Off, which led to multiple scintillating matchups between Team USA and Team Canada. "Our Olympic competition was a huge success," Silver said on Breakfast Ball. "I obviously paid a lot of attention to what the NHL did, which was (also) a huge success." With all those factors, a USA-vs-the-World All-Star Game format has become undeniable. But will it truly increase competition? That depends on the players. Do they buy-in, and can the teams be equal enough to produce an exciting close game? Let's take a look at the potential rosters: Team World Starters G: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada) G: Luka Doncic (Slovenia) F: Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) F: Victor Wembanyama (France) C: Nikola Jokic (Serbia) Reserves Pascal Siakam (Cameroon), Karl-Anthony Towns (Dominican Republic), Alperen Sengun (Turkey), Franz Wagner (Germany), Domantas Sabonis (Lithuania), Ivica Zubac (Croatia), Jamal Murray (Canada) None of this is official, as Silver said, so the stipulations for this exercise exclude any player who's played for Team USA. So, even though Joel Embiid was born outside the USA, he wasn't included on this team. With that said, six of the last seven NBA MVPs came from players on this hypothetical Team World. Those superstars would headline a strong starting lineup, which would be rounded out by the best NBA's prospect since LeBron James, in Wembanyama, and the 2024 Western Conference Finals MVP in Doncic. Team World's bench, though, could be an issue as the depth of American talent buzzing throughout the NBA seemingly outweighs the foreign pool beyond its top stars. Team USA Starters G: Stephen Curry G: Anthony Edwards F: Jayson Tatum F: LeBron James C: Anthony Davis Reserves Tyrese Haliburton, Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Kevin Durant, Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Devin Booker All 12 of Team USA's All-Stars are firmly within the NBA's top 20 players. Curry and James showed their worth to Team USA while leading it to a gold medal in the 2024 Olympics. Because of that, and their combined eight NBA Finals rings, they're locks for this starting lineup. (Yes, Jayson Tatum will be recovering from an Achilles tear next season, but this is all hypothetical, anyway.) Then, take your pick of the NBA's best young guards. That's where Team USA has the advantage. What it gives up in top-end talent, it makes up for the amount of dominant scorers it has that will attack you in different ways. As we saw in the Olympics, foreign clubs were highly motivated to take down the almighty Team USA. While a gold medal won't be on the line here, this All-Star Game format would incorporate that overall pride, and potentially equip Team World with enough talent to actually take down the American stars. This Date in Baseball - Trevor Hoffman becomes the first major leaguer with 500 career saves
June 6 1918 — Casey Stengel, after being traded by Brooklyn in the offseason, made his return to Ebbets Field a memorable one. In his first at-bat, Stengel called time, stepped out of the batter's box and doffed his cap. A bird flew out and the fans broke into laughter. 1934 — Myril Hoag hit a major league record six singles in the New York Yankees' 15-3 rout of the Boston Red Sox. 1939 — The New York Giants hit five home runs in the fourth inning in a 17-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds at the Polo Grounds. With two out, Harry Danning, Al Demaree, Burgess Whitehead, Manny Salvo and Joe Moore connected as the Giants scored eight runs in the inning. 1945 — In the first game of a doubleheader, Boston's Boo Ferriss scattered 14 hits to beat Philadelphia 5-2. Ferris, 8-0 on the year, tied the AL mark held by Chicago's John Whitehead for wins at the start of a career. 1975 — Cleveland manager Frank Robinson hit two three-run homers in a 7-5 win over the Texas Rangers. 1986 — San Diego Padres manager Steve Boros was ejected before the first pitch of the game with the Atlanta Braves when he tried to give umpire Charlie Williams a videotape of a disputed play in the previous night's 4-2 loss to Atlanta. 1992 — Eddie Murray drove in two runs at Pittsburgh to pass Mickey Mantle (1,509) as the all-time RBI leader among switch-hitters. 1995 — J.D. Drew of Florida State hit a record-setting three homers in his final three at-bats in a 16-11 loss to Southern California in the College World Series. Drew finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and 12 total bases, also a series record. 1996 — For the second time in major league history and first in the AL, a cycle and a triple play took place in the same game. Boston's John Valentin hit for the cycle, while Chicago turned a triple play in the Red Sox's 7-4 victory. In 1931, Philadelphia's Chuck Klein hit for the cycle in the same game that the Phillies turned a triple play against the Chicago Cubs. 2000 — The Rally Monkey is born, thanks to the Anaheim Angels' video crew playing a clip from the 1994 film Ace Ventura, Pet Detective on the JumboTron. With the words Rally Monkey superimposed over a monkey jumping up and down in the Jim Carrey movie, the crowd goes wild as the Angels score two runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat the San Francisco Giants, 6-5. 2003 — Insisting the corked bat, designed to put on home run displays during batting practice, was accidentally used in a game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa is suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball. Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of on-field operations, agrees that the Cubs outfielder's use of an illegal bat was an 'isolated incident,' but one that still deserves a penalty. 2007 — Trevor Hoffman became the first major leaguer with 500 career saves when he closed out the San Diego Padres' 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. 2017 — Scooter Gennett hit four home runs, matching the major league record, and finished with 10 RBIs as the Cincinnati Reds routed the St. Louis Cardinals 13-1. Gennett became the 17th player to homer four times in one game. 2022 — Eduardo Escobar hits for the cycle in an 11-5 win over the Padres; he is the first Mets player to do so since Scott Hairston in 2012, and the first player for any team to accomplish the feat at Petco Park. _____
