Sindoor, a made-in-India arms story
File photo
As the dust settles after Operation Sindoor, directed against Pakistan and terror actors on its soil, what is becoming clear is the resounding success of India's nascent defence industry.
It is believed India used
BrahMos
supersonic cruise missiles and other precision-strike weapons to inflict damage to terror bases and military installations deep inside Pakistan. Indian armed forces also deployed indigenous
Akash
air defence missiles and D4 anti-drone systems to repel wave after wave of Pakistani aerial strikes, letting very little pass through.
'During this operation, the credibility of our Made-in-India weapons was firmly established. The world now recognises that the time for Made-in-India defence equipment in 21st-century warfare has arrived,' PM
Narendra Modi
said on May 12 in his address to the nation after Operation Sindoor's success.
For the past several years, the govt has been pushing to maximise acquisition of defence equipment through indigenous sources and promote domestic manufacturing to reduce dependence on foreign-origin weapons as part of its flagship 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' programme. Parallelly, India's defence exports reached a record high of Rs 23,622 crore in 2024-25, a 12% surge over the previous year.

The might of BrahMos
BrahMos (the name represents two rivers: the Indian Brahmaputra and
Moskva
of Russia) flies at a speed of
Mach
2.8, or almost three times the speed of sound, and is considered to be one of the world's fastest supersonic cruise missiles.
It is produced by BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, a Delhi-based joint venture between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya or NPOM.
BrahMos can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms. India has successfully tested all variants of BrahMos and inducted the missile system into its military years ago.
In 2019, the range of this home-grown missile was enhanced up to 450km with a top official then saying, 'India is now the only country in the world to integrate long-range missiles into fighter jets [Sukhoi 30]'.
India recently exported these missiles to the Philippines as part of a $375 million deal signed in 2022.
Efforts are also on to develop a hypersonic version of the missile, tentatively named BrahMos-II. According to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between New Delhi and Moscow, BrahMos-II will be based on a hypersonic scramjet technology. The main purpose of such a weapon is to target deeply buried enemy nuclear bunkers and heavily protected locations; all three military services will utilise this weapon.
Referring to the new BrahMos integration and testing facility that was inaugurated in Lucknow last week, former DRDO chief G Satheesh Reddy said it is capable of delivering 100-150 missiles annually. India has two more BrahMos production facilities — in Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram.
The Akash Shield
Developed by DRDO and manufactured by state-run Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), Akash is a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM). It is part of India's multi-layered air defence system, which played a decisive role in thwarting Pakistani aerial incursions into India recently.
Akash is probably the first-of-its-kind system in the world that is capable of engaging four aerial targets simultaneously at a range of 25km. The new variant — Akash-NG — has an extended range of 70-80km.
The missile is equipped with electronic counter-countermeasure (ECCM) capabilities, enabling it to penetrate enemy jamming and other evasion tactics.
The Akash system is designed for mobile platforms, making it highly agile and capable of rapid deployment anywhere.
While some analysts have likened India's Akash with Israel's famous Iron Dome missile system, there are some fundamental distinctions between the two.
First, Akash is a larger platform than the Israeli one. Also, while the Iron Dome is a potent shield against short-range rockets and artillery shells, Akash is capable of intercepting missiles, combat drones as well as aircraft.
India reportedly signed a deal with Armenia in 2022 to export 15 units of the Akash missile systems. Brazil and Egypt have also shown interest in this weapon.
How D4 disabled enemy drones
India resorted to both kinetic and non-kinetic (jamming) warfare to thwart Pakistani drone swarms. Reports suggest the DRDO-developed D-4 anti-drone system was used in the recent military operations. It can disable ordinary drones as well as unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) employing electronic jamming and spoofing techniques.
D4 (Drone-Detect,
Deter
and Destroy) also has a laser-based kill mechanism to
destroy
enemy drones. It's unclear if this hard-kill method was used in the recent conflict.
This system integrates radars, RF (radio frequency) sensors, and EO/IR (electro-optical/infrared) cameras, thereby offering a multi-sensor and 360-degree approach to detect incoming drones.
Multiple DRDO labs, including the Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bengaluru; Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), and the Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), both in Hyderabad; and Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun, contributed towards developing this system.
Indo-Israeli collaborations
Weapons jointly developed with Israel such as Barak-8 missiles and SkyStriker kamikaze drones also contributed significantly to India's defensive and offensive actions during Operation Sindoor.
Barak-8 is a medium range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) jointly developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries. India's military last month conducted successful tests of this air defence system.
The MRSAM includes mobile launchers that can be deployed on land or on navy vessels. The missile is capable of intercepting targets of up to 70km range.
In India, it is produced by BDL, Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS) and Tata Advanced Systems (TASL).
SkyStriker is a loitering munition jointly developed by Israel's Elbit Systems and Adani Group's Alpha Design Technologies. Although a drone, SkyStriker can be used as a precision weapon. It hovers over the target area to identify and engage threats, operating either autonomously or under human supervision.
Import dependence
While India did demonstrate the effectiveness of its Made-in-India weapons, it still remains heavily dependent on arms imports. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India is the second-largest arms buyer in the world, with an 8.3% share of global imports between 2020 and 2024.
Russia remains India's main weapons supplier, accounting for 36% of its arms imports. Russia's overall share, however, has been steadily declining (72% in 2010-14 and 55% in 2015-19) with India increasingly turning to countries like France, Israel and the US.

All-party parliamentary delegation led by Shashi Tharoor wraps up U.S. visit
A multi-party parliamentary delegation wrapped up its visit to the U.S. after meeting with Vice President J.D. Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau among political and diplomatic leaders, to drive home India's strong resolve to combat terrorism emanating from Pakistan. The delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, was on the last leg of a multi-nation tour to brief key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor that India launched in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The delegation was one of the seven multi-party delegations India had tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. The group arrived in the U.S. capital on June 3 and over the course of three days held a wide array of meetings on Capitol Hill as well as in Washington, briefing American government officials as well as lawmakers about India's stance on cross-border terrorism. The Indian team met Vice President Vance, Mr. Landau, House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) leadership, India Caucus leadership and Senate Foreign Relations Committee leaders. It also held meetings and interactions with a host of U.S. Congressmen, think tanks, policy experts, media as well as members of the Indian-American community. Mr. Tharoor described the meeting with Mr. Vance at the White House for about 25 minutes on Thursday (June 5, 2025) as 'an excellent meeting,' and said the Vice President was 'warm and welcoming and receptive.' 'Mr. Vance expressed complete understanding, first of all, outrage of what happened in Pahalgam and support and respect for India's restrained response in Operation Sindoor,' Mr. Tharoor told PTI after that meeting. After the delegation met Mr. Landau on Friday (June 6, 2025), a statement by State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that the Deputy Secretary of State 'reaffirmed the United States' strong support of India in the fight against terrorism and the strategic partnership between the two countries.' 'We discussed the U.S.-India strategic relationship, including expanding trade and commercial ties to foster growth and prosperity for both countries,' Mr. Landau said. The Indian Embassy said in a statement that during the meeting with Mr. Landau, the delegation briefed him on the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, discussed India's subsequent Operation Sindoor, and put forth India's firm resolve to counter cross-border terrorism in all its forms. In a post on X on Sunday (June 8, 2025), Mr. Tharoor wrote in Hindi, "On behalf of all the members, I express my gratitude to the motherland and the lovers of India in the country and abroad who listened with open ears and accepted with open heart that we are lovers of non-violence but only until someone... Jai Hind". — Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) June 8, 2025 On the last day of the delegation's scheduled meetings, the delegation paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue opposite the Indian Embassy here. 'It is striking how many world capitals are adorned with statues or busts of the Mahatma, the 20th century's greatest apostle of peace, nonviolence, and human freedom,' Mr. Tharoor posted on X afterwards. The team, which had arrived from India in New York on May 24, had travelled to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and Brazil before arriving in Washington for the last leg of the tour. The other members of the delegation were Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Ganti Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), Tejasvi Surya (BJP) and India's former Ambassador to the U.S. Taranjit Sandhu. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. The on-ground hostilities from Indian and Pakistan sides that lasted for four days ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.

Nifty 50, Sensex today: What to expect from Indian stock market on June 9 ahead of US-China trade talks
The Indian stock market benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are likely to open higher on Monday, tracking upbeat cues from global markets, amid optimism over US-China trade talks. The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a positive start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 25,175 level, a premium of nearly 80 points from the Nifty futures' previous close. On Friday, the domestic equity market ended higher, with the benchmark Nifty 50 closing above the 25,000 level, after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) to 5.50% and also reduced the Cash Reserve Bank (CRR) by 100 bps to 3%. The Sensex surged 746.95 points, or 0.92%, to close at 82,188.99, while the Nifty 50 settled 252.15 points, or 1.02%, at 25,003.05. Here's what to expect from Sensex, Nifty 50, and Bank Nifty today: Sensex formed a double bottom reversal pattern on daily charts and is currently trading comfortably above the 20-day SMA (Simple Moving Average), which is largely positive. In addition, a long bullish candle has formed on weekly charts, supporting the possibility of further uptrend from the current levels. 'We believe that the 20-day SMA, around 81,600, will act as a trend-decider level. As long as Sensex remains above this level, the bullish formation is likely to continue, with 82,600 serving as the immediate resistance zone for short-term traders. A successful breakout above 82,600 could push the market up to 83,500 - 83,900,' said Amol Athawale, VP-technical Research, Kotak Securities. Conversely, if Sensex falls below 81,600, sentiment could change, and the index may retest the 80,600 level. Further downside could extend, potentially dragging Sensex down to 80,200. Nifty 50 witnessed sharp upmove on June 6 after the outcome of RBI's mid quarter policy meet and closed the day with decent gains of 252 points. 'A long bull candle was formed on the daily chart that placed it at the edge of a decisive upside breakout of the broader range movement at 25,000 - 25,100 levels. Nifty 50, on the weekly chart, formed a long bull candle after the minor dip of previous two weeks. The weekly chart formation indicates a bullish rising three method type pattern, which is an uptrend continuation pattern,' said Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities. According to him, the next upside levels to be watched for Nifty 50 are around 25,200 and 25,500 levels this week. Immediate support is placed at 24,850 levels. Om Mehra, Technical Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities said that the Nifty 50 formed a strong bullish candle on the daily chart, decisively crossing and sustaining above the earlier resistance zone of 24,900. 'This breakout, accompanied by a weekly gain of 1.02%, underpins the underlying bullish tone and signals the continuation of upward momentum. The index is now comfortably positioned above its 9 EMA, with the widening gap from the 20 EMA offering an additional cushion for any short-term pullbacks. The daily RSI has bounced back above the 60 mark, aligning with the earlier positive divergence and confirming strength in momentum,' Mehra said. The resistance is seen near 25,120, and a sustained move above this could pave the way for further gains in this coming week. On the downside, support has shifted towards 24,880 – 24,900, which now acts as a buy-on-dip zone, added Mehra. Dr. Praveen Dwarakanath, Vice President of noted that the Nifty 50 formed a strong bullish candle and closed 100 points away from its resistance. 'The index has to break the 25,150 level to gain significant momentum towards the 25,700 level, till then one can look to short the index at present levels with a target of support at the 24,500 level,' said Dwarakanath. According to VLA Ambala, Co-Founder of Stock Market Today, the current upward trend may continue for a while and Nifty 50 could find support between 24,970 and 24,900, and experience resistance close to 25,200 and 25,280 in today's session. Bank Nifty index rallied 817.55 points, or 1.47%, to close at 56,578.40 on Friday, while it ended the week with a 1.49% gain. 'Bank Nifty broke out of a six-week consolidation phase and hit fresh all-time highs. The index is trading above its 21-day and 55-day EMAs, reinforcing the positive momentum. RSI at 67 indicates strong but sustainable buying interest. Key support lies at 56,100 any breakdown below this level could see the index slide further toward 55,600. On the upside, immediate resistance is seen at 57,000; a decisive move above this may open the door for a rally toward 57,500,' said Puneet Singhania, Director at Master Trust Group. He believes the overall setup remains positive, and suggests traders to look to buy on dips. Bajaj Broking Research said in a note that the Bank Nifty index formed a strong bull candle in the weekly chart as it generated a breakout above the upper band of the last 6 weeks range signaling resumption of the up move after recent consolidation. 'We expect the index to maintain positive bias and head higher towards 56,700 and 57,200 levels in the near term. The short-term structure remains constructive with immediate support placed at 55,900 levels being the Friday's breakout area. While key support is placed at 55,200 levels being the confluence of 20 days EMA and key retracement area,' it added. According to Amol Athawale, for Bank Nifty, a range breakout formation on daily charts suggests potential for further uptrend. 'For trend-following traders, the key support zones are around 56,000 and 55,500. Above these levels, the index could continue its positive momentum towards 57,200 – 57,700. However, if it falls below 55,500, the uptrend may become vulnerable. Disclaimer: The views and recommendations made above are those of individual analysts or broking companies, and not of Mint.
