Missouri football adds director of football strategy and finance. Here's what he'll do

Missouri football is adding to its front office. The Tigers announced Friday via a news release that they have hired Gaurav Verma as the team's first director of football strategy and finance. Verma most recently was a salary cap specialist with the Denver Broncos. He will report directly to MU head coach Eli Drinkwitz, per the release. Although the role shares some of the same common, front-office-type characteristics, Verma will not be the team's general manager — a significant distinction from front-office moves at other Power-conference programs. Multiple football and men's basketball teams across the country, including Missouri basketball, have added GMs this offseason to help aid coaching staffs as college athletics handle the revenue-sharing era, including player-agent contract negotiations and revenue management. Mizzou basketball added former assistant Tim Fuller to take on that very role. That will not be Verma's job with Mizzou football. His primary responsibilities, per the release, will be to lead 'strategic planning' in the following area: Roster, scholarship and revenue cap planning Talent evaluation and scouting operations Recruiting calendar and logistics Analytics and recruiting infrastructure Compliance, NIL and interdepartmental collaboration That, notably, does not include player-agent relations, but instead is more of a front-office focus on equipping the staff to plan for the new era of college athletics. Universities, beginning this school year, are allowed to distribute $20.5 million of revenue to their student-athletes. Football and men's basketball are expected to receive the majority of that revenue-sharing money. Verma's primary task appears to be managing the football team's allocation of those funds, much like an NFL salary cap. "We are really excited to add Gaurav to our program," Drinkwitz said. "His NFL experience, as well as his business background, will help us navigate revenue sharing and contract management." '"I'm thrilled to join Mizzou football at such a transformative time," Verma said in the release. "With college football evolving rapidly through revenue sharing and strategic roster management, I'm excited to apply my background in finance and the NFL to help Mizzou build sustainably competitive teams on the sport's biggest stage — the SEC. I want to thank Coach Drinkwitz for this opportunity and can't wait to help build on the program's success as we compete for national championships." More: Special teams insight: Observations from Missouri football's brief open period of practice More: 'I don't know what the crap is going on': Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz talks rev-sharing, GM hesitancy Verma originally hails from Boston. He received a Bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Johns Hopkins University. He holds an MBA in finance from MIT. Verma previously has worked in investment banking and data science, per the release. According to his LinkedIn page, Verma spent one year with the Broncos. Drinkwitz previously expressed hesitancy about hiring a general manager, which may explain Verma's role and job title. Back in April in response to a question from the Tribune, Drinkwitz had this to say: "I don't know what the (revenue-sharing) rules are,' Drinkwitz said April 9. 'I don't know. If (adding GMs is) the structure that we go down because of the new settlement that's in place, then, yeah, awesome. I think that's something that would make a lot of sense. If there was a partner that needed to partner with me and handle a little bit more of the business structure side of it — great. But until I really know what that looks like … not yet.' The latter part of that statement — handling the "business structure side" — appears to be most closely aligned with what Verma will do day-to-day. Kevin Durant Responds To ‘Greatest Scorer' Debate: 'You're Diminishing My Greatness'

Kevin Durant Responds To 'Greatest Scorer' Debate: 'You're Diminishing My Greatness' originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Kevin Durant has heard every argument about his place among the NBA's all-time great scorers, but he's not buying into the hype — and he's pushing back against the label altogether. After fans pointed out the fact that Durant hasn't led his team in field goal attempts per game since 2018, the 2x Finals MVP fired back with a detailed defense of his game and why he doesn't care about being called the 'greatest scorer ever.' "30k points on low field goal attempts. I'm a coach's dream. Dime dropper, I mastered scoring at 24 years old, man," replied Durant. "Give it a rest, I don't care about being the best scorer ever. You are diminishing my all-time greatness by calling me that." When talking about the greatest scorers in NBA history, Durant is right up there with players like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Stephen Curry. With career averages of 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game, Durant's numbers are impressive, and they helped him win two championships during his 17-year career. He's also a 4x scoring leader and eighth on the All-Time scoring list with 30,571 points (on 20,999 attempts). As someone with no weaknesses offensively, Durant can score in a myriad of ways, whether it's from beyond the arc, in the mid-range, or under the rim. At 6'11" and 240 pounds, Durant is adept at creating space and using his long wingspan to shoot over defenders. While he's taken fewer shots in recent years, Durant is still impossible to guard and is expected to continue his streak of active seasons with 20+ points per game. Still, if you ask the former MVP himself, he'll tell you that he's much more than just a "scorer." As he explained on X, Durant sees himself as a true two-way superstar who helps his team in more ways than one. His natural height and attention to detail make him a solid rebounder for his position, while his length and mobility make him an elite and effective defender. In fact, during his second season with the Warriors, he finished ninth on the Defensive Player of the Year ballot. In the end, Durant's legacy is about more than scoring. Through his well-rounded game, he's achieved long-term success in the NBA and has managed to keep his game at an elite level at 36 years old. Next season, his first with the Houston Rockets, he'll have an opportunity to further enhance his legacy by leading the franchise where they haven't been since 1995. After failures in Brooklyn and Phoenix, the fans will be watching his every move, but he's ready to answer the call by delivering another All-Star season. For Durant, the 'greatest scorer' tag may sound like a compliment, but it also risks putting him in a box. His career has been defined not just by buckets but by adaptability, efficiency, and a relentless pursuit of winning in multiple environments. As he begins his next chapter in Houston, he's out to remind everyone that his greatness can't be summed up in a single word and that his game still speaks for story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Aug 9, 2025, where it first appeared.
