HBCU Dad shines at WWE SummerSlam event

HBCU Dad shines at WWE SummerSlam event

Miami Herald2 days ago
The spotlight hit MetLife Stadium. The beat dropped. And with over 70,000 fans watching, WWE Women's World Champion Naomi, real name Trinity LaShawn Fatu, made her way to the ring at SummerSlam Night 2-escorted not by pyrotechnics or dancers, but by her own father, ripping live guitar riffs to her entrance theme. It was an unforgettable moment. And yes, there's an HBCU connection at the heart of it all.
Before she stepped into the ring to defend her title against IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley, Naomi walked proudly to the sound of her father, Shawn McCray, playing her theme song live. The moment was epic, but for McCray-known professionally as Derek Mack-it was more than just a performance. It was the culmination of decades of musical mastery, built from the ground up, stage by stage, tour by tour… and campus by campus.
A WWE Moment Rooted in Musical Legacy
Shawn McCray didn't just show up for the moment-he helped build it. A lifelong musician and leader of South Florida's acclaimed Derek Mack Band, McCray is known for his high-energy performances across genres like R&B, classic rock, contemporary jazz, and blues. He's shared stages with legends like The Commodores, BB King, and Cameo, and served as a music director at Disney World's Buena Vista Palace Resort.
But long before SummerSlam or stadium tours, McCray's musical journey began in his grandmother's Pentecostal church in West Palm Beach, Florida. He picked up guitar at age 6 and later studied music theory at the Chauncey Westbrook Guitar School. His first bands played at birthday parties and school shows-small stages with big dreams.
The HBCU That Helped Shape the Sound
And here's where the HBCU piece fits in: according to his LinkedIn profile, McCray is a proud graduate of Bethune-Cookman University, one of the most historic HBCUs in the country. While studying business administration at the Daytona Beach campus, he formed his second band, Sporty, which quickly became a sensation on campus and in local clubs. That experience-collaborating, performing, grinding-would shape the rest of his career.
Through the years, McCray has remained rooted in community, often bridging entertainment and education. He even taught high school music while touring, always giving back the same energy that fueled his own journey.
A Family Entrance for the Ages
At SummerSlam, that journey came full circle. As Naomi walked the aisle to defend her WWE Women's World Championship, it was her father's guitar that signaled strength, legacy, and love. It wasn't just showmanship-it was soul. And for fans who recognized the man behind the music, it was a subtle but powerful tribute to HBCU excellence on one of the world's biggest stages.
In an industry that thrives on spectacle, this entrance stood out for its simplicity and depth: a daughter walking into battle, and a father playing her there-grounded in rhythm, culture, and a legacy built by hand.

Beyond The Gates Recap: Hayley Loses Her Baby

Beyond The Gates Recap: Hayley Loses Her Baby originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Beyond The Gates recap: Ashley's Place: Naomi urges Ashley to tell her what she knows about her dad and Hayley's baby. Ashley tries to put Naomi off who reminds her friend she is a bad liar. Ashley says she can't reveal folks' medical information, even to a friend. Ashley offers to pay her a dollar so they can have lawyer/client confidentiality. Naomi explains the legal grey area she'd be getting into and doesn't want to cost Ashley her job. They decide to try to discuss a hypothetical situation without names. They take a seat, and Ashley tells her a story about a pregnant woman who refused an ultrasound… They go back and forth until Naomi says she actually saw a sonogram picture of the baby, which contradicts Ashley's story of no ultrasound happening. Naomi can't imagine why anyone would fake a sonogram. Ashley says Dani has a theory and says she brought Hayley into the doctor's office the last time and is convinced she is faking the pregnancy. Naomi doesn't buy it as Hayley already has the ring but Ashley isn't quite as certain. They shift the conversation to Ashley, Derek and Andre Richardson. Ashley knows there are bigger fish for Naomi to fry right now and says they can continue the conversation later. With that, Naomi exits. Uptown: Dani is seated when Hayley stumbles out from the back screaming with blood on her. Dani goes to Hayley, but she screams not to touch her. Dani backs away but tries her best to help but Hayley says, 'don't do me any favors, bitch.' She would rather go to the hospital with a stranger than Dani. She points at a stranger, Sammy, who agrees to take her to the hospital. Dani calls Bill and fills him in on the situation with Hayley. They hang up and Sammy walks back in. Dani asks what happened and he says he got her to the hospital but returned to get her phone and purse. He tries to leave with those items when Dani stops him saying he looks familiar. Sammy simply says he hopes Hayley doesn't lose her baby and exits. Orphey Gene's: Vanessa sits thinking about her last encounter with Joey. Just then, Doug shows up and Vanessa tells him to back off Joey. Doug takes a seat and is not surprised his wife only summoned him to discuss Joey. She recognizes he's been drinking, and he says he has nothing else to do since he quit his job. Doug goes off on Ted, but Vanessa redirects him to how dangerous Joey is. Doug gets all kinds of loud, and Vanessa tells him to quiet down. She talks about what Joey is capable of and thinks back to his story about disposing of a man. Doug refuses to be intimidated and thinks he has Joey exactly where he wants him. Vanessa stops her husband dead by saying he put a bug in Doug's car. They calm down and say they care for each other, and Doug says he worries about his wife's association with Joey. He says if something happens with the money Joey will protect himself. Vanessa gets it but is in way too deep. Doug promises not to try and expose Joey. He cares about their marriage and wouldn't want the mother of their children, Donnell and Deanna, to go to prison. Doug says he appreciates his wife and Vanessa thanks him for backing down. Joey's Gambling Pit: Elon arrives to see Joey to talk about the murder in the park. Joey pretends he doesn't know of what he speaks. Elon recalls having a conversation in Bill's office about Kenneth but nothing about him being killed. He says he knows Joey is up to his neck in this murder business and it's his job to bring folks to justice. Elon says the case is closed and wants Joey to be thankful for the favor. Joey says Elon was saving his own behind as so many major players were connected, including himself. As Elon and Joey shake hands, Jacob walks in the room. Joey exits to leave father and son to discuss. Jacob asks his father why the park murder was closed without an arrest. Elon reminds his son to stay in his place and wonders why he's being questioned. Jacob thinks his dad is involved in a conspiracy. He always thought his dad was the most honest of cops which seems to gut his father. Elon explodes and says his son has no clue how much he has been protected. Elon reminds Jacob how his moral code seems to have family exceptions noting his mother and mother in law avoiding arrest. He can't imagine why his son thinks he can break the rules but no one else can. With that, Elon commands his son to cease all investigating of the park murder and assigns him to desk duty. Bill and Hayley's Digs: Hayley is on the sofa messing with her tablet when Naomi arrives. She immediately asks why her ex-bestie lied about the ultrasound. Endings Joey and Vanessa meet up at the gambling pit. She says she convinced Doug to back off. Doug opens a burner phone at Orphey Gene's and makes a call. Sammy/Randy is in an adjacent booth and Doug can't believe he's showing himself in public. Dani flashes back to the earlier scene with Hayley and Sammy. Just then, she gets a text from Andre who wants to talk. Hayley thinks Ashley snooped in her personal records, but Naomi says she would never do that. Before they can resolve anything, Bill arrives to check on his beloved. Hayley says she's not ok as she lost the baby. . Keep checking back for the latest Beyond The Gates recaps! John Cena Shares the One Regret He Has About His Hair Transplant (Exclusive)

The wrestler-actor tells PEOPLE the surgery "completely changed the course of my life"NEED TO KNOW John Cena opens up in PEOPLE's cover story about undergoing a hair transplant He shares the one thing he would do differently regarding the decision The WWE superstar is currently on his farewell tour as he nears retirement from the ring. He's also starring as Peacemaker in the HBO Max series, returning Aug. 21John Cena has a whole new perspective after undergoing a hair transplant in November 2024. In a candid interview in this week's cover story, the wrestler-actor, 48, gets vulnerable about a topic most shy away from: hair loss. He admits he started taking his hair health seriously after a push from his WWE fans. "They've held me accountable. They don't let you get away with phoning it in, because they'll eat you alive," he says. "That's what a good support system does." 'As I was trying to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light," he continues. "I saw their signs that said 'The bald John Cena.' They pushed me into going to see what my options were and actually do some homework to learn about scalp health, hair health, follicle health. I now have a routine: red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, conditioner and I also got a hair transplant." He's quick to clarify he doesn't consider anything the fans did as "bullying." "Just like a good friend, when you have something in your teeth, they pull you aside and are like, 'You have something in your teeth,' " he says. Cena loves his new look but only has one regret: "I hate the fact that if there wasn't so much shame around it, I'd have gotten it done 10 years ago," he says. "I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] suffer from thinning or baldness." He pauses to remark how 'fired up' he gets about the topic. "They don't do anything except move your hair, one by one, from one area to another. It's my hair and I'm not using this stuff [on the side] and I'd like to put it up [on the top]," he says. "If somebody's going to sweat me for that, I don't think there's any shame in that. It completely changed the course of my life.' After his surgery in November, he notes there was a tough period when progress was slow to show. "I came back for the [WWE] retirement tour starting in January — these are the deets you guys don't know — there's what's called a dormant phase, where the little hair [that was left] falls asleep and the new hair falls asleep. So boy, do you get bald," he says. "And January, February, early March was my dormant phase. And boy, did [the fans] let me have it. So every day I knew I went out there with so much more of a bald spot. It was not easy." He still has about five or six months in his growth cycle until he'll fully praise his doctor publicly, but he's passionate about sharing his story in the hopes that it helps others. "There's definitely a lot of folks out there that are wearing that blanket of shame where, man, maybe you don't want to shave your head. And if this resonates with anybody out there and they're like, 'Man, I'd like to research that too,' then cool. Maybe we have curbed the shame and the guilt about somebody wanting to correct themselves." He's also appreciative his new look will give him more range as an actor. "A different hairstyle can identify a part that can get me more work, do the thing I love to do," he says. "So I can continue to follow my passion just by moving [my hair] up here." He's equally passionate about sun safety — he revealed his past skin cancer diagnosis in March and recently had his third spot removed. 'I know, eventually, we're all going to close our book, but if a little bit of sunscreen and a little bit of minoxidil, some vitamins, is going to keep me feeling pretty good and keep my health — those are good things,' he says. 'I love life, and I got love in my life, and I want to keep all that stuff.' The love in his life these days includes wife Shay Shariatzadeh, an engineer he met while watching the Super Bowl in Vancouver in 2019. 'My health and my dedication to my partner are the tip of my spear in life right now," he says. Fans can still see Cena hitting the WWE ring ahead of his retirement by the end of the year. He's also reprising his role as Peacemaker in season 2 of the hit HBO Max show of the same name, premiering Aug. 21. 'It's a great show that's more than just action. It's a love story. It's a workplace comedy. We're the long shots, the lovable losers," he says of the series. He and costars Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Holland 'support each other and allow each other to take big swings. It's fun.' Peacemaker season 2 premieres August 21 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
