IIT Madras' Wadhwani School of Data Science, AI partners with Lloyds Technology Centre for AI, ML research

Indian Express09-07-2025
The Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI (WSAI) at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) on Tuesday entered into a strategic partnership with Lloyds Technology Centre to advance deep research and industrial innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).
The agreement aims to strengthen the industry-academia interface by promoting joint research projects and advanced training programmes. The agreement was signed in the presence of Prof Balaraman Ravindran, Head of WSAI, and Sirisha Voruganti, CEO and Managing Director of Lloyds Technology Centre at the IIT Madras campus.
Under this initiative, engineers from Lloyds Technology Centre will undergo specialised training in fields including Advanced Data Engineering and AI/ML through certified programmes offered by WSAI. The partnership also includes collaborative research in domains like banking, finance, pensions, insurance, and investments — areas where AI-driven innovation is expected to have transformative impact.
'This collaboration goes beyond a single project,' said Prof Ravindran. 'It is part of our broader vision to build enduring partnerships with industry leaders. With a cohort of Lloyds' scientists and engineers already participating in training programs, we have also begun exploring complex AI challenges together.'
Echoing this sentiment, Sirisha Voruganti emphasised the value of the collaboration for both learning and innovation. 'As a technology and data company, our focus is on delivering better and faster solutions to our customers. This partnership with IIT Madras allows us to work closely with world-class researchers and build smarter predictive models.'
'With a broad range of interests spanning pension, insurance, investments and more, we are very excited to delve down and collaborate with the researchers at the institute for building smarter predictive models. We are also ensuring the learning journey is continuous and sponsoring our employees to come to the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI and get certified in advanced AI courses,' Voruganti added.

Since its incorporation on August 6, 2024, Folium Sensing has secured significant contracts, including an Rs 18-crore agreement with GAIL to detect oil and gas pipeline leaks Sanidhya Chaturvedi, a 25-year-old innovator from Satna, has turned a bold career choice into a remarkable entrepreneurial success. An Electrical Engineering graduate from IIT Madras, he declined a lucrative job offer to launch Folium Sensing Private Limited, a start-up at the forefront of optical fibre sensing technology. In just one year, his Chennai-based company has achieved a valuation of Rs 25 crore, secured high-value projects with national impact, and earned recognition from top industry bodies and even the National Security Advisor. A former student of St Michael's School in Satna, Chaturvedi completed both his and at IIT Madras in 2025. During his academic tenure, he co-founded Folium Sensing, introducing a breakthrough application of optical fibres for sensing, an area traditionally limited to internet and communication use. Supported by IIT Madras faculty and drawing on 25 years of research, the company's technology integrates five patents under Chaturvedi's name and is capable of detecting sound, temperature, and strain over long distances with high accuracy. Since its incorporation on August 6, 2024, Folium Sensing has secured significant contracts, including an Rs 18-crore agreement with GAIL to detect oil and gas pipeline leaks. The company is also working with the Indian Army on border surveillance projects, a collaboration that saw Chaturvedi present the technology to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on the Indo-China border. Other initiatives include railway and roadway bridge monitoring, with the ability to detect potential structural threats up to 1.5 kilometres in advance, as well as mine safety projects with Tata Steel and monitoring systems for industrial conveyor belts. In its first year alone, the company has won 25 national awards, among them the Startup India Emerging Entrepreneur Award Under 25, the Google Future X CEO Award, the IIT Madras Alumni Association Award, and the MHRD Youth Icon of the Year Under 25. Chaturvedi attributes his achievements to a supportive family environment and disciplined preparation for IIT during his time in Kota. Today, Folium Sensing employs 25 people and holds a portfolio of 35 patents, including 15 registered internationally. Aligned with the government's Developed India 2047 vision, Chaturvedi says his mission is to strengthen key sectors through indigenous, 'Make in India, Made for India" technology that enhances security, industrial safety, and economic growth. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. From Soldiers To Scientists – India Must Unite For Future Battles, Says Army Chief

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said that India's future security will rely on a 'whole-of-nation' approach, bringing together soldiers, scientists, industry, academia, and civilians in a united effort. General Dwivedi was speaking at the inauguration of the Indian Army Research Cell (IARC) - 'AgniShodh' at IIT Madras. General Dwivedi stressed that future warfare will demand seamless coordination between the armed forces, academia, industry, government research bodies, and even civilian volunteers, and urged IIT Madras faculty and students to focus on cutting-edge fields such as advanced composites, microelectronics, secure communications, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, and synthetic biology. Speaking on Operation Sindoor, General Dwivedi said that after the horrific Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, the central government had given a free hand to the three service chiefs for further action. General Dwivedi said by April 25, the Northern Command had executed strikes on seven of the nine identified targets, hitting deep inside what Dwivedi called the 'heartland' of terror infrastructure, destroying training facilities and killing numerous militants. General Dwivedi added that two additional targets deeper inside Pakistan were hit using Indian Air Force assets due to their range requirements. On May 7, air strikes on camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir eliminated over 100 fighters. Dwivedi stressed that the operation was aimed directly at the 'nurseries of terrorism and their handlers.' Describing Operation Sindoor as both a powerful retaliatory measure and a demonstration of India's growing prowess, the Army Chief said it showcased the nation's ability to mount multi-domain operations — integrating land, air, cyber, and space warfare with tight inter-agency coordination.
