Delhi ‘Most Abusive' In India, Gen-Z Blame OTT, Video Games
Shockingly, 80% of respondents from Delhi admitted to regularly using abusive language.
A new study has revealed that Delhi tops the list when it comes to the 'use of abusive language in India". Conducted by the Selfie with Daughter Foundation in collaboration with Maharishi Dayanand University, the research spanned 11 years and included data from nearly 70,000 participants, ranging from students and teachers to doctors, auto drivers, and police personnel. Shockingly, 80% of respondents from Delhi admitted to regularly using abusive language, much of it directed at women. The study also found that verbal abuse isn't limited to men, many women, too, were found to use such language.
According to the survey, 80% of people in Delhi admitted to using abusive language, with most of it directed at women. What's more concerning is that 30% of the women surveyed also acknowledged using such language. The study highlights that this isn't just a casual habit; it's a growing social issue that demands urgent attention.
After Delhi, Punjab ranked second, with 78% of people accepting that they use abusive language. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar followed closely, with 74% each. Rajasthan came next with 68%, while Haryana recorded 62%. In the western region, Maharashtra had a lower rate at 58% and Gujarat was slightly below that at 55%. Madhya Pradesh reported 48% and Uttarakhand had the lowest among the listed states at 45%.
In sharp contrast, North-East region stands between 20% and 30%. Jammu and Kashmir recorded the lowest in India, with just 15% of people admitting they use such language. The survey was led by Dr. Sunil Jaglan, a researcher at Maharshi Dayanand University and the founder of the Selfie with Daughter Foundation, for the campaign called Gaali Band Ghar Abhiyan.
While Gujaratis are mostly known for their polite way of speaking, in some areas and among younger groups, casual, abusive words are often used jokingly among friends. In Madhya Pradesh, especially in village-side areas, local dialects sometimes include strong words that might sound abusive, even if not always meant in anger. In bigger cities like Mumbai and Pune, the daily stress, traffic and fast-paced life can lead to frustration, due to which people can use harsh language more.

Prajwal Revanna Breaks Down, Weeps In Bengaluru Court After Conviction In Rape Case
Last Updated: Suspended JDS leader Prajwal Revanna was convicted in a rape and sexual abuse case by a Special Court in Bengaluru. Suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former MP Prajwal Revanna broke down and was seen weeping in court after he was convicted in a rape and sexual abuse case. The verdict was pronounced by a Special Court for People's Representatives in Bengaluru, while the quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Saturday. Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, appeared visibly shaken and was seen crying as Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat passed the order, news agency ANI reported. In April this year, the court had framed charges against Revanna for offences under several provisions of the IPC, including rape of a woman by a person who is in a dominant position or a position of control, repeatedly raping a woman, outraging modesty, assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe, voyeurism, criminal intimidation, causing the disappearance of evidence of a crime, Bar and Bench reported. What's The Case Against Revanna? Revanna is the prime accused in four criminal cases filed last year, after over 2,000 obscene video clips, allegedly depicting the sexual abuse of multiple women, surfaced on social media. The first complaint against him was lodged in April 2024 by a 48-year-old woman who had worked as a domestic help at his family's farmhouse in Hassan. She also alleged that Revanna filmed his actions and had threatened to release videos of the abuse if she revealed the incidents to anyone. She eventually left her job and remained silent until news of the leak of those videos surfaced. As he faced criticism, he fled to Germany soon after the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in Karnataka. He was arrested as he returned to India on May 31 last year. He has been in jail since then. In June 2024, the Karnataka Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was probing sexual assault and harassment allegations against him, filed a fourth case against him. Cross-border arms smuggling network busted, four held in Amritsar
Chandigarh, Aug 1 (PTI) Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted two separate cross-border illegal arms smuggling modules and four operatives, including a juvenile, were held, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Friday. DGP Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that they were in touch with Pakistan-based smugglers and retrieved weapon consignments near the international border. The weapons were meant to fuel gang rivalries and disrupt peace in the region, he said. 'The recovered weapons include two Glock pistols, four .30 bore Star pistols and one .32 bore pistol, along with six live cartridges. Apart from recovering weapons, police teams have also recovered their motorcycle, which they were using to deliver consignment," the DGP said. Those arrested have been identified as Sikanderjeet Singh (19) of village Bhagwanpura, Tarn Taran; Pradeep Singh alias Babbal (43) of Antarjami Colony, Amritsar; Jarnail Singh (34) of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Amritsar; and a 17-year-old juvenile from Tarn Taran, according to an official statement. Further investigation is underway to trace forward and backward linkages to unearth the entire smuggling ring. Sharing details of the operation in which four operatives, including a juvenile, were held, Commissioner of Police, Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that preliminary investigations revealed Sikander, along with a juvenile, was in touch with Pakistan-based smugglers. They have their home close to the vicinity of the International Border and retrieved the consignments dropped by drones from the locations provided by them, he said. The CP said Pardeep and Jarnail are associates of slain gangster Ravneet Singh alias Sonu Mota. Bhullar said police recovered sophisticated pistols from them, which they received from Pakistani smugglers and were handed over to them by Sonu Mota prior to his death. The recovery of these weapons averted a major criminal activity in the area, he said. Further investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are likely in the coming days, the officer said. In a separate case, DGP Yadav said in a major intelligence-led operation, Counter Intelligence wing, Amritsar, arrested five operatives working under the directions of a Pakistan-based smuggler and recovered six pistols, magazines and 8 live cartridges. 'The arrested accused retrieved the consignment near the Indo-Pak border and were intercepted near Panjwar bus stop while awaiting delivery to gangsters in Punjab," DGP said in a post on X.
