Haj Fraud Victims Urged To Lodge Official Complaints With TH - Mohd Na'im
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Individuals who have fallen victim to haj fraud have been urged to come forward and lodge official complaints with Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) to facilitate prompt investigation.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said that reports lodged would be followed up with a thorough investigation to enable the Attorney General's Chambers to take legal action under Section 27 of the Tabung Haji Act 1995 against the individuals or companies involved.
'We also urge victims to lodge police reports so that investigations can be initiated against those who offered haj packages but failed to fulfil them, with the funds collected unaccounted for,' he said.
He said this when met after officiating the PPZ-MAIWP 2024 Zakat Collection Agent appreciation ceremony here today.
Mohd Na'im added that his ministry has taken various measures to curb haj fraud, including issuing no fewer than 10 media statements each haj season to remind the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to irresponsible parties.
Meanwhile, Mohd Na'im expressed regret over the actions of certain irresponsible parties who exploited the credibility of religious figures to persuade the public to join haj packages offered by their companies.
'It is deeply saddening when religion, and individuals perceived to be religious, are being used to deceive others. Religion should never be a tool for fraud,' he said.
He also reminded religious figures to refrain from being directly or indirectly involved in such activities, and instead urged them to support the government and TH in nurturing a law-abiding and ethical Muslim society.
On June 14, media reports revealed that 47 Malaysian pilgrims allegedly fell victim to a scam, believed to be linked to a prominent religious figure.

JOHOR BARU: How did a teacher go absent for nine months with no one knowing about her whereabouts – until her body was found in her house? That is the question that has mystified the school authorities who had tried since November to contact the woman who had reportedly been absent from classroom duty since last September. Her decomposed body was found at her home on Thursday. It is believed she had died about a month ago. According to Bernama, the school staff members had not only gone to her house several times but they had also written to agencies like the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Prisons Department, the Immigration Department and also sent a letter requesting her address from the National Registration Department. Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the last time teacher Lo Kwan Fong, 39, contacted her school in Johor Baru was on Sept 26 last year to say that she would not be coming in. She then became elusive and untraceable. 'She could not be contacted via phone calls, WhatsApp, short messaging service (SMS) and Messenger and Telegram apps. 'The school principal also issued a show-cause letter for her absence from duty,' Aznan said. On Dec 29 last year, the woman's neighbour had told school staff that the teacher had not returned to her home for a long time, going by the many letters and mail stuffed into the windows and door of her house. Her car, however, was parked outside. 'The deceased was an only child and lived alone after her parents died,' Aznan said, adding she also had had personal problems and suffered from depression. Her body is still at the Hospital Sultanah Aminah here as no relative had come forward to claim the remains. Yesterday, police confirmed the discovery of the decomposed body at a house in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Iskandar Puteri, at about 8pm after a neighbour complained of a foul smell. A post-mortem could not ascertain the cause of death because of the advanced state of decomposition. On Saturday, a Chinese primary school posted a tribute to the teacher on its Facebook page. 'After days of relentless investigation by the police, it has been confirmed that our dearly respected teacher has tragically passed away at the age of 39. 'The devastating news has brought immense grief to all. Teacher Lo was a role model who was gentle, humble, dedicated, and well-loved by her peers. 'She poured her heart into the field of education, always upholding a spirit of care for her students and a strong sense of responsibility,' it said. In the post, written in Mandarin, the school also appealed to the public for help in reaching out to the woman's next of kin, including an aunt believed to be living in Singapore as well as other relatives in Taiping, Perak.

Malaysians urged to evacuate Iran immediately

'All Malaysians in Iran are strongly advised to leave the country by any available means,' said Wisma Putra in a statement. It added that the situation remains highly volatile and could deteriorate without warning. The Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that the Malaysian Embassy in Teheran is closely monitoring the security situation in the country. 'At present, all Malaysians are reported to be safe. They have been instructed to leave the country without further delay. 'The embassy will continue to provide the necessary consular assistance to facilitate their departures,' Wisma Putra said. Ex-sports dept head charged with bribery and false claims

MELAKA: A former director of the Melaka Youth and Sports Department has claimed trial to five charges of receiving bribes and submitting false claims amounting to RM126,100. Khairol Adri Rosli, 51, entered his plea after the charges were read out before judge Elesabet Paya Wan at the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here. In the first charge, the accused is alleged to have submitted false documents concerning upgrading works for the tennis and petanque courts at the Melaka State Youth and Sports Complex amounting to RM126,100. The offence was allegedly committed at the Melaka Youth and Sports Department's office on Dec 8, 2023. The charge was framed under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act. If convicted, the accused could be imprisoned for up to 20 years and fined not less than five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher. For the second to fifth charges, the accused is alleged to have received RM8,000 from Shaari So'od, 63, who had a vested interest in the upgrading works of the tennis and petanque courts at the Melaka Youth and Sports Complex. The offences were allegedly committed at four locations around the Melaka International Trade Centre and Bukit Baru between Sept 25, 2023, and June 25, 2024. For these offences, the accused was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to two years' imprisonment or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Sharina Farhana Nor Sa'ari proposed bail of RM25,000 for all charges with additional conditions. Defence lawyer T. Gajendran appealed for lower bail, saying that his client has to support three schoolgoing children, his wife and his mother. The court later granted bail at RM20,000 for all charges and fixed Aug 15 as the next mention date.
