MELAKA: A former director of the Melaka Youth and Sports Department has claimed trial to five charges of receiving bribes and submitting false claims amounting to RM126,100.
Khairol Adri Rosli, 51, entered his plea after the charges were read out before judge Elesabet Paya Wan at the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here.
In the first charge, the accused is alleged to have submitted false documents concerning upgrading works for the tennis and petanque courts at the Melaka State Youth and Sports Complex amounting to RM126,100.
The offence was allegedly committed at the Melaka Youth and Sports Department's office on Dec 8, 2023.
The charge was framed under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act.
If convicted, the accused could be imprisoned for up to 20 years and fined not less than five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
For the second to fifth charges, the accused is alleged to have received RM8,000 from Shaari So'od, 63, who had a vested interest in the upgrading works of the tennis and petanque courts at the Melaka Youth and Sports Complex.
The offences were allegedly committed at four locations around the Melaka International Trade Centre and Bukit Baru between Sept 25, 2023, and June 25, 2024.
For these offences, the accused was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to two years' imprisonment or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Sharina Farhana Nor Sa'ari proposed bail of RM25,000 for all charges with additional conditions.
Defence lawyer T. Gajendran appealed for lower bail, saying that his client has to support three schoolgoing children, his wife and his mother.
The court later granted bail at RM20,000 for all charges and fixed Aug 15 as the next mention date.

IGP donates RM5,000 to police fund from court award against Papagomo

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has donated RM5,000 to the Tabung Amanah Warisan Polis (TAWP), using funds awarded by the court in his committal proceedings against blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo. In a statement, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) said a mock cheque for the amount was presented to Bukit Aman management director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid, who is also a permanent member of TAWP, in a brief ceremony at the IGP's office here today. This is Razarudin's second contribution to TAWP, following a RM10,000 donation made on Feb 24, bringing his total personal contribution to RM15,000. 'This contribution reflects my support for TAWP's welfare initiatives to assist police officers, personnel and their children in need. 'Funds like this are essential in easing the financial burden of those in need, especially within the police community,' Razarudin said in the statement. On April 30, Papagomo issued an unconditional apology to Razarudin over defamatory statements made earlier this year. Judicial Commissioner Gan Techiong, in delivering the ruling, said the apology read out in court must also be published on YouTube, TikTok, X, and Telegram for at least seven days. The court also ordered Papagomo to pay RM5,000 in costs. In February, the court granted Razarudin permission to initiate committal proceedings against Papagomo for allegedly breaching a court injunction dated Jan 10. The injunction prohibited Papagomo or his representatives from publishing or disseminating any defamatory statements against Razarudin on social media, whether in his official capacity as IGP or his personal capacity. This included statements made in writing, orally, through videos, or via online platforms and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. The court was originally scheduled to hear contempt of court proceedings initiated by Razarudin against the blogger, but both parties were advised to seek a resolution, which led to Wan Muhammad Azri's apology and subsequent purging of the contempt. On Dec 26 last year, Razarudin filed a RM3 million lawsuit against Papagomo for alleged defamation, which also involved the name of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Renewage Group fined RM30,000 for operating unlicensed tour business

GEORGE TOWN: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) remains committed to strengthening the enforcement of the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482) to ensure that only licensed and legitimate operators run tour businesses, fostering a safer, more competitive, and responsible tourism industry environment. In a statement issued today, it said unlicensed activities can undermine tourist confidence and expose consumers to various risks, including fraud, uncertain itinerary, lack of legal protection and unsafe tourism experiences. 'Therefore, MOTAC is committed to enhancing the enforcement of Act 482 to ensure that only legitimate tour operators are allowed to operate,' read the statement. The statement was issued in response to a case involving a tour company that was fined RM30,000 by the Sessions Court here today for operating a tour business without a valid licence. Judge Irwan Suainbon (rpt: Irwan Suainbon) meted out the fine, in default 12 months in jail, after a representative of the company, Renewage Group Sdn. Bhd, pleaded guilty to the charge, framed under Section 5(2) of the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482). The ministry hoped that the case would serve as a reminder to all operators in the tourism industry to be more responsible and ethical in conducting business activities. It said that the offence under Act 482 is a serious criminal offence and that it will take appropriate action against any person who violates the law.

Sabah graft probe: Sindumin assemblyman Yusof Yacob seen at MACC HQ

KOTA KINABALU: Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob was seen at the Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters today. Yusof, who is also Qhazanah Sabah chairman, was reportedly summoned to give a statement. According to sources, he arrived at the Sabah MACC office at the Federal Government Administrative Complex here around 8.45am. It is understood that Dr Yusof is one of two assemblymen summoned to provide statements today. However, the second individual has yet to appear. The MACC has not disclosed their names. Earlier, MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki s aid three people — including two assemblymen — are expected to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Corruption Court by the end of this month. He said several individuals have already been identified and that prosecution would proceed soon under the probe dubbed Op Adun. Previously, several video recordings allegedly featuring conversations about corruption between businessmen and Sabah assemblymen — linked to mineral mining issues in the state — went viral. Following that, the MACC launched a thorough investigation, including digital forensic analysis of the clips.
