Caio Borralho claims he's new UFC 319 main event backup; Nassourdine Imavov resonds

USA Today29-07-2025
According to Caio Borralho, UFC 319 has a new backup plan.
In the headliner of the Aug. 16 pay-per-view event at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), Dricus Du Plessis is set to defend his middleweight title against Khamzat Chimaev. Current UFC-ranked No. 1 contender, Nassourdine Imavov, was initially set to weigh in as the backup, but plans have changed, according to Borralho (17-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC).
"I told you, Imavov is not the guy that make the rules in this f*cking room, and I told everyone that," Borralho told Real MMA Today. "Now, I'm the backup from the fight against Dricus and Chimaev, 'cause they know I'm the guy that they can call and I can save the f*cking show.
"I can go there, being ready with will of getting this f*cking belt if this opportunity comes to me – and they know I'm the guy they can call and do this sh*t."
Imavov caught wind of Borralho's claim, and issued a reply on social media.
"Backup? 😂 @BorralhoCaio good only to take my leftovers, you'll always come after, you'll always stay behind me. It's your destiny!" Imavov wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Borralho added a quick reply, "The n1 contender? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 ok bro"
Borralho and Imavov (16-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) are currently set to face each other in the main event of UFC Paris on Sept. 6 at Accor Arena. In the unlikely event that backup services are needed, their matchup could be in jeopardy. Regardless of what happens, Borralho promises to be ready for either fight.
"They already tried to book me and Imavov on International Fight Week, and I said yes right away, and he said no," Borralho said. "So how they gonna trust this motherf*cker to be a f*cking backup? He's not the one; I'm the one. And I'm ready, I'm the backup. I'll be there in Chicago. I'm gonna make weight. If this f*cking fight doesn't happen, I'm going three weeks after to Paris, and I'm gonna f*cking kill this guy, and put my name on the No. 1 contender.
"... If something happens to both of the guys, it can be Chimaev, it can be Dricus. It's a big fight, so they need a backup. I'm the one. They called, I answer. I'm ready. I've been studying all these guys. Dricus, Chimaev, Imavov, all these guys. So, I know as a Fighting Nerd, all the strategy and the tactics that I need to have to win every one of them, and that's what I do. I'm a Fighting Nerd, I do my homework, and when the test comes, I always take A+."

McMenamin: LeBron James is still monitoring the Lakers' moves

Ever since LeBron James opted into the final season of his contract in late June, there has been lots of speculation about his immediate future with the Los Angeles Lakers. That speculation stemmed from a statement his agent, Rich Paul, gave to ESPN that stated, in part, that the two "want to evaluate what's best" for the superstar moving forward. James is 40 years of age and is headed toward his record 23rd season in the NBA. It does appear he will start the new season as a member of the Lakers, but what happens afterward with him is anyone's guess, especially now that the franchise revolves around Luka Doncic, who just agreed to a three-year contract extension. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that James is supportive of Doncic being with the team, but that the four-time MVP is still looking at what the team will do to build a championship-caliber roster (at 10:42). "I'm told that the statement that Rich Paul gave to Shams Charania back in June when LeBron opted in still stands," McMenamin said. "LeBron and his representatives will be monitoring the Lakers' moves that they make, because they recognize that there's only a very limited amount of time left in his career and he wants to be competing for championships, whatever time that is." It has been rumored that James and his camp have been unhappy that the Lakers are now catering to Doncic and not James. However, Charania also reported that James is supportive of this shift. With Doncic now under contract for at least the next three years, Los Angeles can fully shift its focus to building a championship team around both superstars. Once James leaves, there's no telling how long it will take the team to find another star to put alongside Doncic, and therefore, now is the time for it to go for its 18th NBA championship, especially since Doncic made it clear that he wants to get a ring now. Chael Sonnen confident that Ilia Topuria vs. Arman Tsarukyan is '100 percent' UFC's plan

Chael Sonnen thinks Arman Tsarukyan is the No. 1 contender after all. Tsarukyan (23-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) pulled out of his lightweight title bout against Islam Makhachev just one day before UFC 311 in January, resulting in Dana White saying that he had to earn his way back to a shot. UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) recently claimed that he'd vacate his belt before defending it against Tsarukyan, and sees either Justin Gaethje or Paddy Pimblett as first title defense. However, despite all those stipulations, Sonnen says he's hearing otherwise. "Outside of illness or injury, even if I'm breaking news to you, I'm not sharing my opinion. I'm sharing a fact with you: It's Arman vs. Ilia," Sonnen told MMA Junkie. "That is 100 percent the plan." Sonnen explained where he came up with his theory. "There's a couple things (that have changed for Tsarukyan)," Sonnen said. "I'm obviously coming to you with information, whether I should have or shouldn't have. Secondly, I was the best man at his wedding and his name is Darryl Christian and he's the wrestling coach of Arman Tsarukyan. Third of all, I just spoke to coach (Sam Calavitta) who wanted to film Chimaev training, and it turned out Tsarukyan is in the room. And a bigger tell also is what Ilia did a week ago, which he said, 'I don't want the fight.' The greats, they don't even know they have it. ... Ilia's first move for doing a fight is to deny the fight. The only person that he said he'll openly fight is Paddy. "Everybody else that he's getting ready to fight, he denies. It's just his approach. Anderson (Silva) had one. He would always deny the fight and he would let that run for about two weeks. He would then accept the fight. He would let that run for about a month then he would slip an injury report to the media where you think the fight is off and it's not going to happen. He would go and get his run out of that and would tell everybody, 'I'm fine, it's on.' I'm only sharing. That was his system – 100 percent of his fights, he built the same way. Ilia's not any different, whether he knows about it or not. Ilia's first move when he's going to fight a guy, aside from Paddy, is to say to, 'I'm not going to fight the guy.'" Tsarukyan weighed in as the official backup for the vacant lightweight title fight between Topuria and Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 in June, but his services weren't needed. Tsarukyan hasn't competed since defeating Oliveira at UFC 300 last April. "(Tsarukyan) got put through a purgatory and he had to get out of it, but he did," Sonnen said. "When he showed up, got licensed, weighed in, went through a training camp and he has to sit in the first row and even watch Paddy 'The Baddy' get in the ring and get the attention and not him, I'm just saying, there is an appreciation, historically, that has shined down – and it's also going to be shown to him." Like many pundits, Sonnen agrees that Tsarukyan is Topuria's sternest test on paper – but still sees "El Matador" being the favorite. "Matchup-wise, the hardest matchup for Ilia is Arman Tsarukyan. ... I think that the world would lean toward Topuria right now," Sonnen said. "He's just the flavor. He's hot. He's undefeated and he's the champion of the world. (He) should be two-division champion, BMF champion, lineal-wise. But if Tsarukyan gets his hand on you, you've got a problem." Coaches Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season

Coaches Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season originally appeared on The Spun. The time has finally come for the Coaches Poll to release its preseason top 25 rankings. For the most part, Texas and Ohio State have been considered the top two programs heading into the 2025 college football season. It's no surprise that there's a ton of hype surrounding Arch Manning and the Longhorns. As for the Buckeyes, they've earned a ton of respect by winning the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. Despite all the buzz surrounding Texas and Ohio State this offseason, ESPN previously had Penn State ranked No. 1 in the country. "After finally turning the corner under coach James Franklin in 2024, the Nittany Lions look loaded for bear this coming season. With Allar, Allen and Singleton returning, Penn State should have one of the most balanced offenses in the FBS, especially if Allar takes the next step as a downfield passer. Adding Pena, Ross and Hudson was critical; Penn State's receivers didn't have a reception in a 27-24 loss to Notre Dame in a CFP semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl. Pena, a slot receiver, had 84 catches for 941 yards with nine scores in 2024," ESPN's Mark Schlabach wrote. On Monday, we learned that the Coaches Poll doesn't support ESPN's way-too-early rankings. Texas was ranked No. 1 in the preseason top 25, with Ohio State claiming the No. 2 spot. Here's the full top 25: Texas Ohio State Penn State Georgia Notre Dame Clemson Oregon Alabama LSU Miami Arizona State Illinois South Carolina Michigan Ole Miss SMU Florida Tennessee Indiana Kansas State Texas A&M Iowa State BYU Texas Tech Boise State Plenty of fans are debating the bottom half of this top 25. Apparently, they don't love BYU and Texas A&M's rankings. Others are arguing that Clemson and Georgia were disrespected in the preseason Coaches Poll. Luckily for the college football world, it won't be long before the season begins. After all, Week 0 is just around the Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season first appeared on The Spun on Aug 4, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.
