Man 'boiled alive like a lobster' after falling down drain in horrifying death
Confronting mortality is all in a day's work for those who operate at the sharp end of life's full stop, and there's one vocation that's privy to every secret of our final curtain.
Medical examiners are tasked with piecing together the puzzle of death, often deciphering the narrative of someone's last chapter.
Dr Judy Melinek, a seasoned medical examiner from New York City, has peeled back the curtain on her time spent amongst the departed, including recounting the most chilling demise she's ever encountered.
Her 2014 memoir, 'Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner', lays bare the grim realities of urban demise and delves into the profound theme of mortality through her professional lens.
In a candid chat with the New York Post, Dr Melinek recalled how her chief resident once told that NYC was brimming with 'all kinds of great ways to die'. This offhand remark turned out to be a prophetic guidepost for her career, as she now considers herself well-versed in the myriad ways one can shuffle off this mortal coil, reports the Mirror US.
"The worst nightmares I ever had in my two years at OCME (Office of Chief Medical Examiner) came after I performed the postmortem examination of Sean Doyle," she confessed.
Dr Melinek recounts the chilling tale of Doyle, a bartender in New York City who had been out for drinks with his mate Michael Wright and Wright's girlfriend on a fateful night in 2002. It's thought that Wright became convinced Doyle was making advances towards his girlfriend, leading to a heated argument between the two.
The precise sequence of events that followed remains murky, but what is known is that Doyle ended up at the bottom of an open manhole. Doyle plummeted approximately 18 feet into the gaping hole, landing in a pool of scalding water gushing from a ruptured main.
Astonishingly, he survived the fall without breaking any bones - but this proved to be a cruel twist of fate due to the blistering hot water below.
His demise was far more horrific as emergency services were unable to extract him from the tunnel in time due to the extreme heat. After crying out for help, Doyle tragically succumbed, essentially being boiled alive as temperatures soared to a searing 148°C.
Dr Melinek described the deceased man as appearing as though he'd 'been steamed like a lobster'. His skin had entirely peeled off, and his internal organs were cooked through.
The medical examiner confessed that this was the case that haunted her the most, unsurprisingly giving her the 'worst nightmares' of her career to date.

Church confirms 'miraculous' moment face of Jesus appears on bread
The Catholic Church has declared the appearance of an image of Jesus Christ on a ceremonial bread during a Holy Communion in India as a genuine miracle. This extraordinary event took place over a decade ago in the southern Indian hills, when a mysterious face appeared on a Consecrated Host being raised by Father Thomas Pathicka. What initially seemed like a peculiar stain gradually became more luminous, slowly morphing into what looked like the figure of Christ. News spread and numerous visitors began to flock to the church in Vilakkannur to kneel and worship beside what they believed to be a Eucharistic miracle. The village was soon completely inundated with pilgrims - roads were congested and strewn with vehicles, prompting authorities to step in to ensure crowd safety. Shortly after, the Catholic Church discreetly took possession of the host and initiated an investigation, both theological and scientific, in accordance with Vatican protocols, reports the Mirror US. Between 2018 and 2020, the host was returned for public veneration, with the decision to acknowledge the event as 'miraculous' only being made now, some 12 years after the incident. The Vatican has officially recognised it as a true miracle following a visit to Vilakkannur by Archbishop Joseph Pamplany of Tellicherry to verify the 'miraculous' moment. The announcement was relayed through Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, and was proclaimed during a special mass. This event joins a select list of rare and sacred happenings in church history that are said to defy natural explanation, yet strengthen spiritual belief. Most recorded Eucharistic miracles usually involve the Host 'bleeding', with scientific tests confirming the presence of human heart tissue and AB blood group. However, in the Vilakkannur incident, there was no blood or tissue, just a face appearing on the bread itself.

Drunk couple decapitate and stab dog to death to 'avenge' dead cat
A couple planning to start an animal breeding business drunkenly used a chainsaw to behead their Mastiff before the woman stabbed it to "avenge" their cat. The French couple were jailed after police found the dog stabbed to death when they were called out to reports of domestic violence at the couple's home in Levis last May. The woman told the court in Auxerre she stabbed the Argentinian mastiff after finding her partner's cat dead, who she says the dog had killed, Le Parisien reported. The pair, who remain unnamed, said they had wanted to euthanize the "dangerous" dog, with the man saying "decapitation was the only way he could think of" in ending his dog's life. The man told the court that both he and his partner had been drinking heavily - a litre of vodka and two beers each - before the horrific 20-minute assault with a chainsaw unfolded. The man was being treated for drug and alcohol use and admitted to having "finished off the dog to avenge (his) cat". Several other cats and dogs lived in the home as the couple were planning to start a breeding business, the news outlet added. The prosecution denounced the "barbaric act" as "unheard of brutality" and a "first for France" while the defendants' lawyer pleaded that they were under the influence of alcohol and one had a "personality disorder", reports Mirror US. The man, 38, was handed 18 months in prison and the woman, 31, was sentenced to two years. It comes after an adorable dog found wandering the streets after she was a victim of a "heinous act of cruelty" has "America's saddest face," say social media users. Lavender was discovered in April with wounds to her face and ears, injuries so severe one of her ears had to be intentionally cut off at a rescue centre. The pup also had fractured teeth and was also severely underweight. But Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), a charity in Menands, New York, has taken care of Lavender, and, when she is well enough, wants to help find her the perfect forever home. It has branded her last owner's acts as "heinous" and "cruel" as law enforcement suspect Lavender was a victim of animal cruelty. Authorities in Menands, which is near the city of Albany, have released fresh information - and upsetting photographs - of the brown dog in an effort to establish exact details about her history. The release was shared on social media this week, where dog lovers have expressed their anger at the previous owner - and adoration for the cute pooch. In the photographs, it is apparent Lavender had suffered injuries at the hands of the "heinous" owner. One Facebook user said: "What a sweet little girl. So sad she has been abused and still looks so sweet!!! Fingers crossed the evil person who did this is punished. Poor baby."

Smartphone users warned to delete these 20 apps immediately
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info In our technologically advancing world, we're all guilty of trusting the internet too much without considering what we might be giving up in return. This is where mobile applications come into play. Our smartphones are brimming with them, with nearly two million on Apple's App Store and almost three million on Google's Play Store - all readily available and easily accessible. It's often claimed that the average person has around 100 apps downloaded. Of course, there are your usual social media platforms like X/Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, then you have news apps like Dublin Live's very own app available on all devices, plus dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, games like Clash of Clans, and many more, reports the Mirror US. We're constantly urged by all the major mobile and security companies to only download applications from the official stores, but it seems even that isn't guaranteed to keep you 100 per cent safe. Researchers at Cyble have uncovered a range of apps that have tricked their way onto the Play Store by mimicking the names or icons of legitimate digital wallets. Once these apps are installed onto your mobile device, they open a phishing website or an in-app WebView where they request mnemonic phrases that can be used to completely empty your wallet. Cyble found more than 20 different apps targeting crypto wallet users by impersonating well-known wallets like SushiSwap, PancakeSwap, Hyperliquid and Raydium. A total of nine wallets are being impersonated, but there is concern that this list could expand, affecting even more people. The Mirror US has compiled a list of the following apps that should be immediately removed if found on your smartphone. It's also crucial to ensure Google's Play Protect is enabled on your device. Cyble cautions: "[These apps] employ phishing techniques to steal users' mnemonic phrases, which are then used to access real wallets and drain cryptocurrency funds. "They have been progressively discovered over recent weeks, reflecting an ongoing and active campaign." All apps that are being discovered have been reported directly to Google, who are in the process of removing them from their PlayStore. The Mirror US has contacted Google for an official statement on this matter and is awaiting a response.
