28 Years Later's Aaron Taylor-Johnson teases sequel The Bone Temple

28 Years Later's Aaron Taylor-Johnson teases sequel The Bone Temple

Yahoo6 hours ago

28 Years Later may have taken years to get to the big screen, but viewers won't have long to wait for the next instalment in the franchise: The Bone Temple.
That's right, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's iconic horror franchise will return and much sooner than viewers think, which is a good thing given the shocking events that close out 28 Years Later. The movie follows the journey of 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams), whose life is turned upside down after he and his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) have terrifying encounters when they go to the mainland so that Spike can have his first kill.
The Rage virus that broke out nearly 30 years ago, and which Cillian Murphy's bicycle courier Jim first encountered in 28 Days later, has ravaged the landscape. Britain has been cut off from the rest of the world and the survivors have been left to fend for themselves, those that remain have been forever changed by the outbreak.
Taylor-Johnson, Williams and their co-star Jodie Comer shared some details with Yahoo UK of what people can expect from the next film. Here is everything that we know so far about The Bone Temple, but be warned there are some spoilers for 28 Years Later in this article.
When asked about the sequel by Yahoo UK and if there was anything they could tease, Taylor-Johnson shared: "Oh if only, we wish. But I think if you come and see this movie and you see the journey in which Spike goes, where it ends, you definitely wanna see more for sure.
"I suppose I could give a tee up of what Danny would say: This movie starts with Teletubbies and it ends with Teletubbies, but not in the way that you expect."
Comer, who portrays Spike's mother Isla, admitted that she's "just as excited to see" The Bone Temple as audiences will be, because of the unexpected ways it takes the franchise.
Reflecting on the surprising way 28 Years Later ends, she said: "It's like a total energy shift, right? You're like, 'oh my God, OK!' you can already feel that the second film is going to be very, very different, which is exciting."
Following the death of his mother Isla (Jodie Comer), Spike decides to venture onto the mainland but not before leaving the baby of an Infected with his island community. His mother helped the pregnant infected give birth, and while the baby girl is the child of an infected she isn't infected herself, so Spike urges his community to keep her safe and tells them that she has named her Isla.
Spike decides he wants to spend some time alone on the mainland, still angry at his father for cheating on Isla while she was dying from cancer. The film jumps to 28 days later (see what they did there) and Spike is taking things day by day, surviving off the land and killing infected as he goes.
One day he is jumped by a number of infected and whilst fighting them off he is met with a group that is being led by Jack O'Connell's Sir Jimmy Crystal. All of them are dressed the same, as knock-off Jimmy Saville impersonators with long blonde hair, a plethora of gold jewellery and colourful boiler suits — they're also all named Jimmy in some variation, and whether any of this is addressed in The Bone Temple is to be seen.
O'Connell's character asks Spike if he and his followers can step in, when Spike agrees the group unleash hell on the infected in a bonkers sequence that sees them execute them with the help of elaborate acrobatics and gruesome homemade weapons. Jimmy then introduces himself to Spike, and the film leaves the characters there ahead of The Bone Temple.
Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Garland, The Bone Temple was filmed back to back with 28 Yers Later and it is scheduled to be released on 16 January 2026.
Little is known about the plot other than it will follow on from the events of 28 years Later and Boyle is hopeful that a third film can be made to make it a trilogy.
As mentioned, Williams and Taylor-Johnson are expected to return for the next film, as is Ralph Fiennes who starred as Dr Kelson in 28 Years Later and O'Connell will reprise his role as Sir Jimmy.
Emma Laird will also return as Jimmima, as will Maura Bird as Jimmy Jones, and Ghazi Al Ruffai as Jimmy Snake, all of whom are members of Crystal's cult.
The most exciting casting news though is that Cillian Murphy will return to the franchise as Jim, the character he made iconic in 28 Days Later. It is unclear how Jim will fit into the narrative, but he was last seen living with fellow survivor Selena (Naomie Harris) and Hannah (Megan Burns) in Cumbria where they were hoping for rescue.
28 Years Later is out now in cinemas, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple premieres in UK cinemas on 16 January, 2026.

Ari Aster's Eddington Trailer: When Reality Is a Horror Movie

The small American town of Ari Aster's new Eddington doesn't look so different from the real world presented by CNN or the Drudge Report: People can spin anything into a conspiracy, government is turned against itself, and gunfire erupts with seemingly little provocation. The small, fictional New Mexico town in the brand-new trailer for Eddington — set in 2020 — isn't so different from downtown Los Angeles right now, where local government clashes with the National Guard sent in by the president, suspicions run high, and everything feels on the edge of violence. Though a complete film can of course go places only hinted at in a preview, the Eddington trailer falls into the same tricky predicament as many recent satire or horror films: How do you keep up with a real world more dramatic than the movies? It feels quaint, for example, to see Joaquin Phoenix's Sheriff Joe Cross and Pedro Pascal's Mayor Ted Garcia face off over the direction of a small town, when in real life the president of the United States is threatening to arrest the governor of California. And while we don't recall anyone in 2020 connecting anti-Covid masks with child trafficking — as Austin Butler's cult-figure preacher, Vernon Jefferson, does in the Eddington trailer — it sounds like exactly the kind of weird connection people would make at any moment in the conspiracy-mad 2020s. Eddington, which premiered at Cannes to strong reviews and comes to theaters July 18, carries the tagline 'hindsight is 2020' — that's the long-ago year when the pandemic began — and an image of buffalo running off a cliff. (Indigenous people on the plains used to hunt and kill buffalo by chasing them into a panicked cliff jump.) Recent projects like Jesse Armstrong's terrific Mountainhead and the new season of Black Mirror feel like they're racing to stay a few steps ahead of the real-life technical innovations that can make reality seem ever more dystopian. Once we turned to entertainment for something more exciting than our humdrum real lives. Now we turn to entertainment for something not necessarily more boring, but easier to contain: It resolves, more or less, at the end of the movie, or episode, or season. Also Read: In Ari Aster's Eddington: Small-Town Covid Tensions With Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler Turning off the news can feel like hiding. Part of our instinct is to confront the problems of the world, in hopes of fixing them. But they can also add to a sense of learned helplessness that might make us worse at fighting for a better world. How do we strike the right balance between being informed and doomscrolling? Eddington presents interesting questions, but not escape: The scenario in the trailer parallels our real lives too precisely. As tension of masks and fear of the virus sweep through Eddington in 2020, Butler's social media tirades add fuel to the brushfire. Pascal's mayor pleads for calm. Phoenix's sheriff traffics in grievance. Emma Stone, as the sheriff's wife, seems disgusted, and wondering how she's gotten dragged into this insanity. When she types "Horrible" in the comments section of a Vernon Jefferson video entitled "How Masks Make It Easier to SMUGGLE CHILDREN," is she referring to the practice of smuggling children? Or the fear-stoking tactics of the video? It's been a cliche for years to say real events parallel a horror movie. But it's saying something when the director of Hereditary and Midsommar turns to the news for inspiration. And reality is not, to be clear, a horror movie. You can turn off a horror movie. Enhypen Reaches New Career Highs With Its Latest Era

Enhypen scores its biggest U.K. chart hits yet with 'Bad Desire (With or Without You),' as it debuts ... More inside the top 40 on two singles tallies. INDIO, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 19: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) (L-R) Heeseung, Jay, Sunoo, Sunghoon, Jungwon, Ni-ki and Jake of ENHYPEN perform at Sahara Tent during the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 19, 2025 in Indio, California. (Photo byfor Coachella) Enhypen has ranked as one of the biggest names in K-pop around the world for half a decade now. The group has been steadily growing its fanbase in Western markets after breaking out and becoming superstars in South Korea. It took the vocal troupe several years to reach the United Kingdom's music charts, but with each passing project, the group becomes bigger and bigger. Enhypen lands a new hit song in the U.K. this week with 'Bad Desire (With or Without You).' The track debuts on both the Official Singles Downloads and Official Singles Sales charts, opening at Nos. 20 and 21, respectively. As 'Bad Desire (With or Without You)' debuts, Enhypen earns its first top 40 hit on both of those purchase-centric tallies in the U.K. The tune brings the K-pop favorites to a new high point, outpacing 'XO (Only If You Say Yes)' by more than 20 spaces. Enhypen has now collected five total hits on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads charts. The K-pop group first landed on these lists in April 2024 with 'Sweet Venom, and since then, the outfit has appeared with ' XO (Only If You Say Yes),' 'No Doubt,' 'Lucid,' and now 'Bad Desire (With or Without You).' So far, every one of those tunes has managed just one turn on the tally. 'Bad Desire (With or Without You)' serves as the lead single from Enhypen's new EP Desire: Unleash. That short set appears only on the Official Album Downloads chart in the U.K., where it soars to a new high of No. 31 after debuting at No. 80 last frame, a position it hit after a shortened tracking period of availability. Enhypen had been collecting placements on the Official Album Downloads list for years before scoring a hit song. The group launched on the downloads-only tally in December 2020 and has thus far scored six bestselling releases, with its newest arrival landing somewhere in the middle in terms of peak position.
