Allegations against Mchunu echo Selebi scandal
Towards the end of former president Thabo Mbeki's rule, explosive allegations were made against then national police commissioner Jackie Selebi.
Selebi was not only a top ruling party member, but the former United Nations ambassador was also at the time president of Interpol, the international crime fighting organisation.
When the head of the National Prosecuting Authority, Vusi Pikoli, attempted to effect arrest and search warrants against Selebi, it resulted in his own suspension and later firing.
On Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made similarly explosive allegations of possible criminal conduct by sitting Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu and head of this country's detectives, Shadrack Sibiya.
Mkhwanazi made the public allegations that much like Selebi back in the day, the top politician and cop have direct relationships with bosses of crime syndicates who have been linked to drug cartels and assassinations.
Selebi was temporarily shielded from arrest by the immediate suspension of Pikoli by Mbeki, whom, it was alleged, was a close friend and confidant of the police commissioner.
It is widely accepted that President Cyril Ramaphosa owes his first term as president to, among others, Mchunu and former deputy president David Mabuza who died last week.
And the question uppermost in everyone's mind is: will Ramaphosa follow in Mbeki's footsteps to first shield his political ally Mchunu and, second and most importantly, put in motion steps that might result in the end of the career of Mkhwanazi?
It is not every day that a provincial police commissioner alleges that his political principal has been caught out in a lie to parliament about being an associate of an alleged crime syndicate boss.
The easiest way to make all these unsavoury allegations go away is to get rid of the one making the allegations, by either removing them from their position or, as is common in mafia movies, make him an offer he cannot refuse – resign or be killed.

The third option, a favoured method in this country's law enforcement, is to suspend and charge him with trumped-up violations of the police's code of conduct.
The president's way of shielding those close to him politically is to 'apply his mind' to matters.
It will not shock anyone if he institutes a commission of inquiry into Mkhwanazi's allegations, while Mchunu and Sibiya continue in their jobs and Mkhwanazi is sidelined. Mkhwanazi's allegations, if not proven untrue in an official manner, will confirm that the descent of this country into a mafia state is in full swing.
It is known that kidnappings have now become an accepted daily occurrence.
The recent assassination of financial forensic investigator in the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality showed that the murder of Babita Deokaran under similar circumstances was not the first, nor the last.
These crimes will continue because those in charge protect the criminals. There are calls for Mkhwanazi to follow 'the proper' police channels and not act 'rogue'.
Those people must ask Pikoli what following the proper channels did for him and his career.
Mchunu and Sibiya can easily refute the allegations made by Mkhwanazi under oath.
And if they prove him to be a loose cannon who is out to destroy their careers, he will pay the price.
But people deserve to know that this country is not being run by criminals with a badge.

Man accused of murdering Eersterust woman he met online abandons bail bid
The man accused of luring an Eersterust woman to his home through a Facebook hook-up site, murdering her, and burying her body in a shallow grave has abandoned his bail application in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. Helder Isidro (36) from Eersterust is facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice following the death of 30-year-old Loveness Magabe. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, it is alleged that the accused and the deceased initially met on a Facebook hook-up site and later continued communicating via WhatsApp. 'They arranged to meet in person at a lodge in Eersterust on July 26, 2025. 'On the said date, it is alleged that the accused ordered an Uber for the deceased to pick her up from her place of residence in Sunnyside and drop her off at their meeting place. However, the meeting place was not a lodge as initially agreed, but the accused's place of residence.' Mahanjana said that, upon Loveness's arrival before the two met, it is alleged that the deceased sent a message to her friend and told her that the place where she was dropped off looked dodgy, and she also sent her friend a pin location in case she went missing. 'When the deceased failed to return home the following day, July 27 2025, her friend opened a missing person case at the Sunnyside Police Station. 'Following an intensive police investigation, the body of Loveness Magabe was discovered in a shallow grave at the accused's residence in Eersterust on July 31, 2025. Isidro was arrested on August 04, 2025 at his grandmother's residence in Limpopo.' Mahanjana furthermore said the case has been postponed to October 15 2025 for further investigation. 'In a separate matter, the accused is also facing a rape charge and is scheduled to appear in Court 04 on the same date.' Ermelo Court sentence a 41-year-old to life for raping his teen daughter's friend
The Ermelo Regional Court sentenced a 41-year-old man to life imprisonment on Monday, August 4 for the rape of his daughter's friend in 2024. The accused pleaded guilty to the offence and was subsequently convicted. His daughter and the victim were both 16 years old when the incident occurred on March 25, 2024. According to the provincial spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority, Monica Nyuswa, the victim visited the man's daughter and had a sleepover at his house. 'The friend became intoxicated and the convict took them home. When they arrived at his home, they fell asleep on the couches. During the night the convict took the victim to his bedroom and raped her. His daughter witnessed her father taking the victim and saw her in his bed,' said Nyuswa. The victim reported the rape at the Ermelo Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical and psychological support and legal assistance. In aggravation of the sentence, State Prosecutor Chané Rothman handed in two victim impact statements facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Faith Masingo, compiled by the victim and the convict's daughter. The man's daughter blamed herself and wished that it had happened to her, not her best friend. Rothman argued that the accused was in a position of trust as the victim's parents permitted her to visit and sleep over, stating that the accused was supposed to reprimand the victim and her friend about underage drinking, and that his actions were despicable. 'The court found no compelling or substantial circumstances to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life,' Nyuswa said. The court declared the convict unsuitable to work with children and ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Ten SAPS, EMPD officers held for theft released on bail of R1,500 each
Ten police officers who appeared before the Germiston magistrate's court on Tuesday and Wednesday on charges of theft were each granted bail of R1,500 after an unopposed bail application. They are Fortune Dhlamini, Nomfuneko Felicia Sambane, Mangalore Moloko, Nhlanhla Tumelo Matsane, Thabo Mokgaboki, Matthews Mashala, Mesho Hector Mabasa, Dlalisa Eugene Zamokuhle, Kgagare Tseego and Sidebi Tendani. 'The case stems from a complaint laid by a shop owner in Edenvale, who alleges that during a raid on his business premises on June 4, the officers seized R35,000 in cash, cigarettes worth R150,000 and boxes of Panado tablets,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said. She said the officers, six from Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and four from the SA Police Service, were part of a joint law enforcement operation aimed at monitoring compliance at shops in the area. 'According to the complainant, he was not present during the raid but was later informed by his cashier that the police had confiscated the items. The seized goods were allegedly placed in several refuse bags to be submitted as exhibits.' However, the complainant claims that upon his arrival at the police station, only one refuse bag had been registered. The cash was neither returned nor recorded in the SAP13 register, the official register used for documenting exhibits seized during criminal investigations. The matter was postponed until September 8 for further investigation.
