Popular discount store announces another shop closure
Eleven branches of the Original Factory Shop will shut in the coming weeks after the discount chain announced further closures.
The group's store in Middlewich, Cheshire, will close its doors for good on Saturday, June 28.
It's the latest location earmarked for closure by the group, which had already announced the shuttering of 10 stores over the next month, including branches in Dorset, Aberdeenshire and Cumbria.
This is in addition to five further shops, which will be put up for sale.
Residents reacted to the blow to their local high street, saying they would miss the discount store.
One wrote: 'What a shame. So sorry for the staff.'
'Another blow for Middlewich… sad news. Staff always friendly and the store was good to shop in…', another commented.
A third said: 'There is going to be nothing left in Middlewich everything is closing down.'
The Original Factory Shop was purchased by Hobbycraft owner Modella in February.
Modella also recently acquired WH Smith's High Street stores, which will be rebranded to TG Jones.
The group announced its intention to place TOFS into a company voluntary arrangement or CVA – a scheme used to avoid insolvency and prevent the business from collapsing.
As part of the process 'a number of loss-making stores will have to close,' the company said.
The latest closures follow over a dozen shops already shuttered in the past year, the Sun reported. More Trending

Other high street names including Iceland and Poundland have announced store closures, with hundreds of locations facing an uncertain future.
Most recently, fashion giant River Island announced it had called in consultants to discuss how to keep stores open through tough trading conditions.
The brand has had a high street presence for more than 75 years, having previously named Lewis and then Chelsea Girl before being renamed to its current iteration in 1988.

New Look will be pulling down the shutters of one of its locations in Birmingham. "Thanks for having us, Northfield," it reads. "This store will be closing on Sunday 8th June. "Don't worry, you'll still be able to find us at with 100s of new styles dropped every week! Scan to download our app for exclusive offers." In the lead up to Sunday's closure, the retailer has launched a major closing-down sale, with prices slashed by up to 70%. The retailer has not confirmed the reason behind the move, it is also uncertain how many staff members will be impacted or whether anyone has been issued a redundancy notice. What's happening at New Look? New Look is ramping up a store closure programme ahead of April's National Insurance hike. Approximately a quarter of the retailer's 364 stores are at risk when their leases expire. This equates to about 91 stores, with a significant impact on it's 8,000 strong workforce. The company has restructured its store estate twice in the past six years, reducing its portfolio from around 600 UK stores in 2018. The move to accelerate store closures is understood to be driven by the forthcoming increase in National Insurance, announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in October. Employers currently pay NICs for most workers earning more than £9,100 a year. The sum they pay is the equivalent of 13.8% of the employee's earnings above that threshold. For an employee earning £30,000, the employer would pay NICs of £2,884.20. However, in the Autumn Statement, the Treasury announced it would increase the tax rate to 15% and reduce the threshold at which firms must pay to £5,000. The British Retail Consortium has predicted that these changes will create a £2.3billion bill for the sector. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." A New Look spokesperson said: "Our store estate is an important part of our business, alongside our best-in-class website and app. "We have recently invested over £3million in our stores in Greater Manchester to trial new omnichannel initiatives to improve customer experience. "We also continue to invest in our thriving online platform which has resulted in a strong online sales performance, with volumes significantly outpacing last year and an improved online margin." "On occasion we do have to close stores, either due to the landlord's request or because the site becomes unviable. "However, we always remain on the lookout for appropriate new opportunities across the country and continue to invest in our existing store estate."

Major retail chain with 124 stores confirms popular branch to shut in weeks
A MAJOR DIY retailer has launched a huge closing down sale as it prepares to close one of its branches in weeks. The Hobbycraft store in Imperial Park, Bristol, has confirmed that it will close its doors for good on June 21. 1 Every item in the store is now 50% off, with some items on offer for 70% less than their normal price. Shoppers have taken to social media to voice their disappointment at the news. One said: 'Very sad that this great shop is closing.' Another added: 'No! First Home Sense now Hobbycraft.' While a third person asked: 'Any ideas what will go in the shop in its place?' The Bristol store is one of at least nine Hobbycraft stores that have been earmarked for closure this year. Owner Modella Capital is launching an overhaul after buying Hobbycraft in August last year. Modella also agreed to purchase WHSmith's high street business earlier this year. In April Hobbycraft said that nine of its stores will stop trading by mid-July, which will affect between 72 and 126 jobs. It has not yet confirmed how many jobs will be affected. Hobbycraft said the shake-up is intended to help secure the future of at least 99 stores and 1,800 jobs in the business. Hobbycraft chief executive officer Alex Wilson described the closures as a 'last resort' and an 'extremely difficult decision'. He said: "For many our stores are more than just arts and crafts supplies - they have become places for gaining crafting ideas and inspiration. "Very sadly, the strength of our offering has not made us immune from the challenges faced by the retail sector in recent years. "Making these changes is sadly a necessary action to enable us to keep our doors open to crafters up and down the country." Which other shops are closing? The Original Factory Shop is set to close nine shops this month as it prepares to shutter a total of ten branches in the coming weeks. The chain previously warned it would have to shut some loss-making locations after it began to struggle in recent years. Private equity firm Modella bought The Original Factory Shop back in February and has since launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 of its stores. The Works is also set to close its Margate High Street store on June 8. A spokesperson for The Works said: 'As part of ongoing plans to optimise our store portfolio, we will be closing our Margate store. 'We have loved being part of the local community and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure. 'Customers can continue to shop with us at our nearby stores at Westwood Cross Shopping Centre and Ramsgate Garden Centre.' The chain has already closed five other branches this year. Iceland is also set to close a store in Margate in June. Its store in College Square will shut its doors for the last time on June 21. Iceland has not yet confirmed the reason for the closure but has said that staff will be offered jobs within the business. .
