Odisha: Medha Patkar, 6 barred from entering Rayagada villages ahead of CM's visit
Rayagada district collector Ashutosh Kulkarni said Patkar and six others, including activist Prafulla Samantra, are prohibited from entering, assembling, addressing any gathering, or participating in any public or quasi-public activity within the jurisdiction of Sunger, Adajore, Sindoor Ghati, Talajhiri, and Kashipur Gram Panchayats in the district from the afternoon of August 8 to the afternoon of August 10, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
Members of two organisations — Niyamgiri Suraksha Samiti and Maa Mati Mali Suraksha Manch — have also been barred from entering the area during this period.
The district administration's order came a day ahead of chief minister Mohan Majhi's visit on Saturday to observe World Indigenous Day and distribute funds to women beneficiaries of the Subhadra Yojana.
'During the period, all forms of padayatras, public meetings, press briefings, socio-political gatherings, or protest assemblies in the said areas by the individuals or their known affiliates shall remain strictly prohibited. The Superintendent of Police is directed to ensure strict compliance with this order and to take necessary preventive and coercive action, including enhanced deployment, round-the-clock surveillance, and, if warranted, detention of violators to pre-empt any breach of peace,' a prohibitory order issued by the district administration said.

This comes two months after Patkar and over 20 others were detained by the Rayagada administration shortly after she arrived on June 5 to participate in a public meeting protesting the proposed bauxite mining by Vedanta Limited.
In March 2023, the Odisha government issued a 50-year mining lease for a proposed bauxite mining project in the Sijimali hills, with bauxite mines extending over an area of 1,549 hectares. After facing setbacks in its attempt to mine the Niyamgiri hills, Vedanta's interest shifted to Sijimali as part of its strategy to secure bauxite. The Sijimali mines have an estimated bauxite reserve of 311 million tonnes and are likely to displace 100 families from 18 villages in two districts.
Vedanta has applied for the mandatory environmental clearance under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and forest clearance under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. In October 2023, two public hearings in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts for environmental clearance ended amid widespread protests.

UP assembly holds AI training session for MLAs
Ahead of the monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly commencing on Monday, a training session on artificial intelligence (AI) was held for the MLAs on Sunday. Experts from IIT-Kanpur conducted the session chaired by assembly speaker Satish Mahana. Over 200 legislators attended the session. Will AI be able to differentiate between genuine data from the fabricated one? And what about data safety,' asked Sirathu MLA Pallavi Patel. Aradhana Mishra, Congress legislature party leader, said, 'More than introducing AI, the legislators need to be told how to connect dots between their working needs and the AI.' 'Introducing AI is a welcome step but a debate makes it better for the assembly,' said leader of the opposition Mata Prasad Pandey. Kaimganj MLA Surabhi Singh said, 'Can AI cater to the sentiments of our voters? This is significant as an MLA has to connect directly with voters.' 'What if the data available from sources such as the internet is incorrect. Should we first focus on correct data,' asked another member in the house. The experts from IIT-K answered their queries. Special session to discuss UP's 'Vision 2047': Mahana The 24-hours special session to be conducted from August 13 to 14 will have a discussion on UP's 'Vision 2047', said the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly speaker Satish Mahana on Sunday. The session will start at 11 am on August 13. This is the second such session after 2019. The special session will have primary debate that will be taken before the public and then tables in the assembly. 'In three-and-a-half years, sessions have been conducted smoothly and have witnessed increased participation of the members during debate and discussions. The fact is only twice the session had to be adjourned in the past three-and-a-half years. This successful conduct had a positive role of the opposition too,' Mahana added. Asked about the demand from the opposition regarding increasing days of session for debate, he said, 'The days are not less for debate. The monsoon sessions in the past have been conducted similarly.'

Ghana holds memorial night for helicopter crash victims
Ghana's government held an Evening of Reflections and Memorial on Saturday to conclude the three-day national mourning for the five officials and three military personnel who died in the military helicopter crash on Wednesday. Thousands of Ghanaian citizens, government officials, members of parliament, and officials from various political parties, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor and former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, participated in the event held on the forecourts of Parliament House in Accra, the country's capital. Tributes were read by the institutions and families of the eight lost souls amid the sound of traditional dirges played on flutes with candlelight, dotting the dark evening, well set to depict the mood of gloom across the nation due to the unfortunate incident, Xinhua news agency reported. In his tribute, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama described the incident as a painful loss to the country, the families, and loved ones of the deceased. "They were only a few days ago vibrant lives, each dedicated to a singular cause -- the betterment of our country. I want to honor those lives that were lived in full with unwavering passion and a commitment right up until they took their final breaths," Mahama added. He urged Ghanaians to let the ultimate sacrifice of their deceased compatriots, though painful beyond measure, serve as a powerful reminder of the profound work that remains to be done for Ghana. "Let us recommit ourselves to working tirelessly, transcending our differences, and focusing our energies on the monumental task of nation-building. They served Ghana with their last breath, and it is our sacred duty to continue that service, to build the Ghana they wanted, a Ghana of opportunity, justice, and prosperity for all our citizens," the president said. He announced that two of the deceased would be buried at the military cemetery on Sunday in line with Islamic traditions. A military helicopter crashed in Ghana's Ashanti Region on Wednesday, killing all eight occupants, including Defence Minister Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Expedite ‘Adavi Thalli Bata' works to provide road connectivity to remote tribal habitations in Andhra Pradesh, Pawan Kalyan tells officials
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Environment, Forest, and Science & Technology K. Pawan Kalyan has instructed officials to speed up the laying of new roads connecting 625 tribal villages under the 'Adavi Thalli Bata' programme, and has emphasised the need for regular monitoring and reporting of the progress of the works. Speaking to the officials through a teleconference on Sunday, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said road construction was taken up in the tribal areas along with the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), with the funds provided under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and sub-plan allocations amounting to approximately ₹1,005 crore. Since the works under the 'Adavi Thalli Bata'programme were designed to connect the remote tribal habitations, priority should be accorded to their expeditious completion, he siad. The officials told Mr. Pawan Kalyan that laying roads to the hill-top habitations required breaking of rocks, and, therefore, the works would take considerable time. Besides, a lot of precautions should be taken in view of the steep terrains to be covered. Out of 128 roads located in the reserve forest areas, forest clearances were given for 98. 'As on date, 186 works are in progress and 20 more are in the tenders stage,' they said. Mr. Pawan Kalyan said the government was striving to achieve the goal of providing connectivity to all the tribal habitations, and that the Central government had sanctioned ₹556 crore under the PM JANMAN. Besides, funds available under the MGNREGS were being utilised. The administrative machinery must focus on expediting the works as funds were being mobilised from time to time, the Deputy Chief Minister asserted, adding that the required forest clearances would be given sooner than later after due deliberations.
