
Phosphorus Depletion Is An Investment Opportunity
As CO2 levels rise, soil phosphorus becomes less available for certain key crops like paddy rice. This means more will have to be applied. If we have endless amounts of phosphorus then this isn't an issue, phosphorus can be applied as liberally as we like.
We Have About 100 Years Of Phosphorus Left On Earth
That will be a pretty hard limit when it's reached. It will be difficult to replace the source of phosphorus when the phosphate mines run out, so recapturing as much as possible is our best strategy. The reserves confirmed in Norway in 2023 have nearly doubled our known global supply, but this is still a finite resource. What's more, the mining isn't simple and clean; even with expanded reserves we all want clean air and water, which phosphate mining doesn't support. Strip mining always destroys the surface landscape and ecosystems which is bad, for sure; with mining phosphates we further release heavy metals and radioactive materials that add more risks. Florida and the Netherlands are not rushing to exploit their reserves because of the environmental impact of mining phosphates. In Florida, a large phosphate reserve sits on the Florida Aquifer which really exemplifies the problem.

Prior to the Norway phosphate deposit discovery, 70% of the world's phosphate reserves were in Morocco and the Western Sahara. Some of the world recognizes this territory as Moroccan now, but there is still a war there, and the Polisario Front broke the ceasefire in 2020 after Moroccan provocation. Will these lucrative phosphate reserves lead to more resource driven conflict? Will Algeria seize the opportunity to support separatist forces and profit from the instability, as we so famously have seen nations do with critical minerals in Congo? Will parts of Norway look like Nauru, a formerly lush tropical paradise stripped of its phosphate rock, and now a barren, impoverished cautionary tale?

Bacteria And Fungi
Once phosphorus is applied to a field, it will be available to plants for a short time before reacting with other elements in the soil. There's a goldilocks phenomena with pH for phosphorus; if the soil is too acidic or too basic, the phosphorus will bind with other elements and become largely unavailable to the plants. A pH range of 6-7 is ideal for absorption. This shows the difficulty of handling other factors that could impact phosphorus use indirectly. Complicated problems will often require multifaceted solutions.
Some bacteria and fungi make phosphorus in the soil available to plants. Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) are able to break down insoluble forms of phosphorus and make it available to plants as a form that can be easily absorbed. These phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms can reduce fertilizer use by half while producing the same, or higher, crop yields.
There is a lack of standardization, and the scalability of this method will need attention. Do lingering questions about this biotechnology disqualify it? No, it means that this is an emerging technology with huge growth potential. This is the time to invest and research.
Gene Editing
If we can't add endless phosphates to soil, and if bacteria and fungi can only do so much, then why don't we make plants that are better at absorbing phosphorus? It's being worked on. The japonica variety of rice has been successfully gene-edited by Indian researchers to absorb 20% more phosphate, an advancement that will be applied to the indica variety; these are the two most popular types of rice is Asia. Given its role as a staple food for much of the world, without adapting rice to climate change we will need to use ever larger amounts of our limited phosphorus, or face food insecurity.
If this sort of advancement can me made with rice, can gene editing be done to other staple crops to increase their absorptivity?

Wastewater Recycling
There are a few ways to go about this, but the basic idea is to remove phosphorus from wastewater and reuse it. Each individual discharges 2 grams of phosphorus, daily. Recovery can be done with thermal, biological or chemical means which have their respective pros and cons, but ultimately these processes can recover maybe 40-90+% of the otherwise wasted phosphorus.

Phosphorus mining should be regarded as our last option after recovery and mitigation. With every finite good, we'll have to worry about scarcity and the associated price increases, and this is all while we have any phosphorus left to fight over. Investing in the infrastructure to recover phosphorus and beneficial microorganism cultivation are the superior, greener investment opportunities that are still largely untapped.
When problems like the finite supply of phosphorus have been identified and publicized 100 years ago, how can we reasonably pretend to be unaware? Why, beyond collective failure of global political leadership, do we not have answers to questions that were asked back before the Great Depression? Having been aware of this phosphorus problem for a century, and with perhaps two centuries left before we're completely out, how much longer should we wait before mass adaptation of the solutions, even if they require substantial investment now? Why doesn't every wastewater facility apply some method of recapture?

Summer is by far my favorite season. The warm temps and sunny weather mean I can spend more time outside doing things I love, particularly around water. And since I live at the coast in Florida, that means I'm spending a lot of time these days paddleboarding, kayaking and my new favorite hobby, shelling. But that tranquil time in nature is soon spoiled when I find myself covered in red, itchy bumps. If you're like me, you get frustrated by the number of mosquito bites you acquire. It's downright infuriating when I come inside sporting several new welts, especially when my friends report that they don't have a single one. Why is that? I did some research and found that it's not because I'm particularly unlucky. There are actually scientific reasons why mosquitoes single out certain people. Why do mosquitoes bite? Contrary to what you might think, mosquitoes don't bite people for food; they feed on plant nectar. Only female mosquitoes bite, and they do so to receive proteins from your blood needed to develop their eggs. Why are some people more prone to bites? There are several factors that impact why some people are more prone to mosquito bites than others: Blood type A common belief is that mosquitoes are attracted to certain blood types, considering mosquitoes bite humans for their blood. Blood type is determined by genetics, and each blood type is created based on the different sets of specific proteins, called antigens, on the surface of red blood cells. There are four main blood types: A, B, AB and O. While there are no firm conclusions as to which blood type is more attractive to mosquitoes, several studies have suggested people with type O are most appetizing to mosquitoes. A 2019 study observed mosquito feeding behavior when presented with different blood type samples, and found mosquitoes fed from the type O feeder more than any other. A 2004 study also found that mosquitoes land on blood group O secretors (83.3%) significantly more than group A secretors (46.5%). However, these studies are not definitive, and much is still up in the air about mosquito preferences when it comes to blood type. Clothing color Mosquitoes are highly visual hunters when it comes to finding a human to bite. This means movement and dark clothing colors like black, navy and red can stand out to a mosquito. Research has shown that mosquitoes are more attracted to the color black, but there has been little additional research into why this is the case. Carbon dioxide Mosquitoes use sight and smell to find hosts to bite. One of the quickest ways mosquitoes can sniff out a person is through the carbon dioxide emitted when we breathe. According to research published in the journal Chemical Senses, mosquitoes use an organ called a maxillary palp for carbon dioxide detection and can sense it from 164 feet away. Because carbon dioxide is a huge attractor, people who emit more of it -- larger individuals and people who are breathing heavily when working out -- are more attractive to a mosquito. Body odor and sweat Mosquitoes are attracted to more substances and compounds than just carbon dioxide. Mosquitoes can find people to bite by smelling substances present on human skin and in sweat, including lactic acid, uric acid and ammonia. A new study found that mosquitoes are attracted to compounds called carboxylic acids that every human produces through sebum, a waxy coating, on their skin. The sebum is eaten by the millions of beneficial microorganisms found on human skin, which produces more carboxylic acid -- and will, in turn, produce an odor similar to cheese or smelly feet that appears to attract mosquitoes. Lead researchers on this study said mosquitoes are sensitive to human odor and that even perfumes or colognes can't mask it. Researchers are still learning why certain body odors are more attractive to mosquitoes, but they do know that genetics, bacteria on the skin and exercise all play a factor. Genetics impact the amount of uric acid emitted, while exercise increases lactic acid buildup. Beer In a small study, mosquitoes were observed to land on participants more frequently after consuming a small amount of beer. But before you swear off outdoor brews, know that the study only had 14 participants, and it found that mosquitoes may only be marginally more attracted to people who have been drinking beer. When mosquitoes bite, they inject some saliva when drawing blood. This saliva contains certain anticoagulants and proteins, triggering the immune system to respond to these foreign substances. How to prevent mosquito bites The best way to handle a mosquito bite is to not get them in the first place -- but oftentimes, that's easier said than done. Some common ways to prevent mosquito bites include: Use repellents and bug sprays Use natural repellants (citronella essential oil Avoid going outside at dawn or dusk Avoid dark-colored clothing, specifically black Avoid standing water and try to eliminate standing water near your home Use mosquito netting when camping or sleeping outdoors Wear long sleeves and pants Prevent mosquito bites when traveling internationally If you're using DEET insect repellent, make sure to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidelines (PDF) about the strength and proper application. Repellants are highly effective in preventing mosquito bites. Amanda Capritto/CNET How to treat mosquito bites Mosquito bites, while annoying, are often not severe and will resolve in a few days. In the meantime, there are several treatments to alleviate the itchiness and inflammation: Clean with rubbing alcohol if a fresh bite Take an oatmeal bath Use over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benadryl or Claritin Apply mild corticosteroid creams Use aloe vera to reduce inflammation Try a cold compress or ice pack for 10 minutes Though difficult, try as best you can to not itch the bite too roughly to prevent any sort of skin reaction or infection. Mosquito-borne diseases and illnesses While the majority of mosquito bites result in welts that heal in a few days, mosquitoes are known carriers of many deadly diseases and illnesses, including but not limited to: Mosquitoes are often considered one of the deadliest animals on earth. Mosquito-borne diseases kill more than 725,000 people a year the World Health Organization estimates, with malaria accounting for the vast majority of deaths (600,000). While malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases hit Sub-Saharan Africa the hardest, mosquitoes pose a risk to every continent and nation. Most types of mosquitoes in the US are nuisance mosquitoes -- mosquitoes that do not spread germs that make people sick -- but there have been outbreaks of West Nile, dengue, chikungunya and Zika in a few states and territories. There are several steps you can take to control mosquito populations and minimize risk. Make sure to properly cover and store water containers around your home and drain any standing water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs. For treatments, you can use an outdoor adulticide to kill adult mosquitoes or larvicides to treat bodies of standing water that will not be used for drinking and cannot be drained. Infected bites will often look extremely red, swollen and warm or have a red streak that spreads outward from the bite. Florida Just Deployed 40 Robot Bunnies to Trick the Worst Predator in the Everglades
Florida's Burmese python problem isn't going away anytime soon. The researchers, snake trackers, and other conservationists working to remove the giant snakes will be the first to tell you that eradicating this invasive species isn't a realistic goal. That hasn't kept them from trying to manage the problem, though, and scientists are now working on a new and futuristic approach to finding and removing pythons: robotic bunny rabbits. Researchers at the University of Florida are hoping these robo-bunnies can be another tool in the python toolbox, similar to the highly successful scout-snake method that has been honed by wildlife biologists at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Only instead of using GPS-collared male pythons to lead them to the females, trackers would use the robots to bring the invasive snakes to them. These are stuffed toys that have been retro-fitted with electrical components so they can be remotely controlled. The robots also have tiny cameras that sense movement and notify researchers, who can then check the video feed to see if a python has been lured in. The University's experiments with robotic rabbits are ongoing, according to the Palm Beach Post, and the research is being funded by the South Florida Water Management District — the same government agency that pays bounties to licensed snake removal experts and hosts the Florida Python Challenge every year. 'Our partners have allowed us to trial these things that may sound a little crazy,' wildlife ecologist and UF project leader Robert McCleery told the Post. 'Working in the Everglades for ten years, you get tired of documenting the problem. You want to address it.' McCleery said that in early July, his team launched a pilot study with 40 robotic rabbits spread out across a large area. These high-tech decoys will be monitored as the team continues to learn and build on the experiment. (As one example, McCleery explained that incorporating rabbit scents into the robots could be worth consideration in the future.) Recent studies (including one authored by McCleery) have shown the massive declines in the Everglades' marsh rabbit populations that can be directly attributed to pythons. 'Years ago we were hearing all these claims about the decimation of mesomammals in the Everglades. Well, this researcher thought that sounded far-fetched, so he decided to study it,' says Ian Bartoszek, a wildlife biologist and python tracker based in Naples. 'So, he got a bunch of marsh rabbits, put [GPS] collars on them, and then he let them go in the core Everglades area … Within six months, 77 percent of those rabbits were found inside the bellies of pythons.
