Danny Harrison, 71, was ejected from his 16-foot vessel while in Lake Charles' Calcasieu River at around 8:30 p.m. local time on June 8, according to a news release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).
Harrison's boat hit an object in the water, and the 40-horsepower vehicle then circled the surrounding area unmanned, eventually striking him, the LDWF release said.
According to the LDWF, Harrison was wearing a life jacket, but he did not appear to be wearing a 'kill switch lanyard,' which is designed to remotely shut off a boat's engine if the driver is ejected. (The LDWF explained that a kill switch lanyard is technically required for a boat the size and power of the one Harrison had been operating.)
An online obituary for Harrison described him as 'the most skilled fisherman' who 'never gave up his secret fishing spots.'

'He gave the absolute biggest and warmest hugs to everyone,' the obituary continued, adding that Harrison was a licensed minister and was 'committed to his calling.'
Harrison is survived by his wife, children and siblings. A memorial event was previously held in Lake Charles on June 12.
The LDWF's Enforcement Division is continuing to investigate the incident.
The organization did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for an update on the investigation on Sunday, June 15.

A Trump Ally Pressed for a Mexican Citizen's Release from ICE Custody

After nearly two months in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, Paola Clouatre, 25, secured her release from a Louisiana detention center this week following an intervention from an unlikely source: a Republican lawmaker who has allied himself with President Trump. Officials who work in the office of Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, requested that the Department of Homeland Security release Ms. Clouatre from detention after an immigration judge halted her deportation order, according to emails reviewed by The New York Times. Ms. Clouatre, a Mexican citizen, had been detained by ICE agents on May 27 while she was at a routine appointment in New Orleans related to her application for a green card and permanent resident status. Ms. Clouatre first entered the United States as a teenager to seek asylum with her mother and brother. The family was processed at the border in Tijuana, according to Ms. Clouatre and her lawyer, and was granted parole, which allows migrants to remain temporarily in the country. In 2018, Ms. Clouatre's mother failed to show up for a court hearing in California, leading a judge to issue a deportation order against Ms. Clouatre. By then, Ms. Clouatre was homeless and estranged from her mother, she said. She did not discover the deportation order until earlier this year, when she was already in the process of applying for a green card. Ms. Clouatre is married to Adrian Clouatre, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with whom she has two young children. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Louisiana 'Medicaid millionaire' bought Lamborghini while claiming government benefits for years

Not so fast. A Louisiana woman who purchased a Lamborghini while fraudulently obtaining Medicaid benefits is facing a fraud charge, authorities said this week. Candace Taylor, 35, of Slidell, dubbed the "Medicaid millionaire" by the office of Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, was arrested Monday. The state Bureau of Investigation began looking into Taylor after receiving a complaint from the Louisiana Health Department saying she underreported her income to qualify for Medicaid benefits. "From 2021 through 2024, Ms. Taylor continued to transfer tens of thousands of dollars between her personal and business accounts, with personal inflows consistently exceeding the eligibility thresholds for Medicaid," the affidavit directly states. Medicaid provides health insurance for low-income adults and children. The program is partially funded and primarily managed by state governments. The federal government establishes parameters for states to follow. However, each state administers their Medicaid program differently. Taylor initially applied for Medicaid in May 2019 under the alias Candace Sailor, listing a bi-weekly income of $1,900 and no dependents, authorities said. That application was denied. Less than a year later, she re-applied under the same misspelled name, prosecutors said. She was allegedly inconsistent with the years she reported having a dependent. Investigators eventually discovered she owned six different businesses that generated more than $9.5 million between January 2020 and December 2024, according to court documents. A look at her accounts revealed deposits totaling $480,994.09, with over $325,000 directly attributable to Taylor's business activities, authorities said. In addition, transfers and payments were disbursed from one account, including $45,086.65 in vehicle payments to Audi Finance. Other purchases included a $100,000 wire transfer to Tactical Fleet, an exotic car dealership, followed by a $13,000 debit card transaction for the purchase of a 2022 Lamborghini Urus, authorities said. Taylor also made multiple six-figure withdrawals via cashier's checks, which allegedly funded property purchases, cosmetic surgery, high-end jewelry, and luxury services. Two months after the Lamborghini, Taylor tried to renew her Medicaid benefits, claiming she made $4,000 per month with an unidentified business. However, she omitted that she was the owner, authorities said. Investigators also saw Taylor flaunting her lifestyle on social media, the attorney general's office said.
