Jess Ciesla discovered her love for reading in 2022.
Ciesla wasn't always a voracious reader. Instead, the Virginia local picked up the hobby after giving birth to her daughter.
"I was struggling with postpartum depression, and we don't live around a lot of family," she said. "The first book I read was 'Verity' by Colleen Hoover, and it kind of took over. Reading became something that I really love to do."
She quickly ran out of space to store her growing book collection. Then, inspiration struck.
Ciesla had been watching videos from @amystinylibrary on TikTok and realized she could follow in the creator's footsteps to make her own library shed.
"I half jokingly asked my fiancé how many likes I would need on a TikTok to get my own," she told Business Insider. "He played along and said 100,000. He would've got me one regardless."
"I posted the video and it doubled the goal in less than 24 hours, so we just went for it," she added.
Ciesla and her fiancé had no building experience, so they purchased a premade shed in early May.
The couple visited local businesses that sell Amish-built sheds and found one on clearance for $13,000. The 12-by-16-foot structure had a weatherproof door, weatherproof windows, and an electrical panel already installed.
By May 31, the shed had been delivered to their home, and renovations had begun.
The shed needed insulation and electricity, among other things.
Robinson's best friend is an electrician with experience in construction, so he helped the couple through their renovation journey.
Here's a breakdown of what they added to the structure and what each part cost:
Electricity (indoors and out): $250
Insulation materials: $320
Rented insulation blower: $250
Shiplap for the walls and ceiling: $540
Cooling and warming window unit: $500
Floor panels: $393
Trim: $50
Caulk: $17
Building bookshelves proved to be the most difficult part of the renovations.
Robinson and his friend had never built bookshelves, Ciesla said, and the process was more difficult than they'd initially imagined.
They spent a full day constructing the shelves on the shed's ground before securing them to the wall the next day.
"I think they did a great job," she said, adding that the bookshelves cost $900.
Eventually, it was time to paint.
Ciesla wanted the space to feel feminine, so she chose a vibrant pink color to paint the walls.
Paint supplies cost the couple $145.
Ciesla and her fiancé didn't set a budget for this project. They spent about $18,380.
Additional costs included a $140 chandelier and $1,875 worth of "fun stuff," like furniture and decor.
"It was a little surprising at the end how much we paid," she said. "We didn't think the bookshelves would be that much. But everything else, we were pretty much expecting."
The process was also relatively quick. Though it spanned three months, Robinson and his friend only worked on the space during two weekends and one extra day.
Once it was time to decorate, Ciesla knew she wanted her library to feel cozy and feminine.
She complemented the space's pink walls and glass chandelier with rose vines, floral curtains, and more.
When people see the space, they immediately want to know where Ciesla got her chair.
The $708 piece comes from Ashley Furniture, though Ciesla bought it from the online retailer Luna to save money.
"It is so comfortable," she said of the cushioned seat. "It rocks, it swivels, it glides, and it reclines. It's the perfect chair."
The project was technically finished on July 15, but Ciesla is still adding final touches.
Ciesla describes her library as an "escape from reality."
Ciesla, a budding content creator, has gained over 32,000 TikTok followers who have watched her create this library. One of her most viral videos about the space has 5.9 million views.
Those viewers will be happy to know she plans to keep going. In the coming months, Ciesla hopes to add a porch, a decorated walkway outside, landscaping, and blinds.
In the meantime, though, she's enjoying every second she gets to spend inside.
"As a mom and someone who has a loud brain that never really turns off, it's so grounding to have a little escape from reality where I can do something I genuinely love," Ciesla said.
"It's honestly not just about the books," she added. "It's about having a space where I can reconnect with myself and breathe. Every person deserves to have a place like that."

Bridal designer Hayley Paige is making her comeback. Here are 5 lessons she learned after her yearslong legal battle with JLM Couture.

Hayley Paige was giddy when we spoke in August. Just over a week earlier, she had released Twice Upon A Time, a collection of 30 wedding dresses — her first since a yearslong legal battle with her former parent company, JLM Couture, during which she could not design gowns or use her name professionally. "There was definitely a moment where I was just like, 'I need to move on. I need to work for a living and find some other way to utilize my craft,'" Paige told Business Insider. Paige got the rights to her name and the Hayley Paige brand as part of JLM's bankruptcy settlement in May 2024. Twice Upon A Time marks the first collection she's released in five years, and she's celebrating with a trunk show at Kleinfeld Bridal the final two weekends of August. Ahead of the show, Paige shared some of the lessons she learned about business while she was away from the bridal industry. Social media savvy Social media played a significant role in Paige's legal issues with JLM, as she and the company disagreed about who owned the @misshayleypaige accounts. Paige got ownership over the accounts as part of the settlement, and she said her experience has led her to be more cautious about what she posts. "You don't want to be trading your integrity for exposure, which I think a lot of times happens inadvertently on social," she said. "Everybody wants to participate, and I think that's a beautiful thing, but you also want to be really careful of protecting your peace and setting some boundaries." Paige said she feels most comfortable sharing content about her wedding dress designs or interactions with brides rather than leaning into trendy skits or dances or sharing anything too personal. In addition, Paige doesn't think it serves her business-wise to chase virality. "It's always great when you go viral, but it's more important for you to become a vintage than it is to go viral," she said. "That longevity and that intuitiveness that goes into branding is so much more important than the reactivity and just being timely with stuff." Have no fear Twice Upon A Time has all the hallmarks of Hayley Paige designs that brides have come to love, like voluminous skirts and intricate lace, but Paige has also innovated, adding bold pops of color and new silhouettes. Paige told Business Insider she has felt less fearful of taking risks with her work since she stepped back into bridal. "I feel more defiant, and I'm not as afraid of people misunderstanding me or not liking what I do," she said. "As you go through challenges and adversities, you really do build a muscle for it." "I think as a designer, accepting that you're not going to be for everyone is OK," Paige added. At the same time, Paige said it's important to keep customers in mind every step of the way for people who work in industries like bridal, where the products are custom-made. "I want to have a very clear vision, but I also want it to feel like the bride is part of this too," she said, adding that she thinks of the bride as her "muse." Your talent as currency Paige has always been passionate about designing wedding dresses, but she now has a better appreciation for what her talent means from a business perspective. "It's always important to treat your talent like intellectual property because it actually is," she said. "When protected, it behaves like interest on intellectual capital. Basically, creativity compounds." For Paige, maintaining creative control has become paramount, as has implicit trust in everyone she works with. Paige has had the same business partner for 12 years, who is now the brand manager for Hayley Paige. "Knowing somebody for so long is a real value add, because you've been through all those ups and downs and you've seen every part of that person," she said. Paige also hired the same tech designer she worked with when she was still with JLM. She's working with boutiques like Kleinfeld, with which she has long-standing relationships. "Kleinfeld is so sentimental and special to me," she said. "Kleinfeld trunk shows were always the most exciting because of ' Say Yes to the Dress ' and all these magical moments made there in that space. To be rebranding and coming out with our very first trunk show there, it's super poetic, and it feels like a homecoming in a way." Prepare for the worst-case scenario Although she's in the midst of an exciting new collection, Paige said she now approaches her business endeavors "assuming it could go wrong," a marked shift from how she used to work. "I think before, I was a bit more reckless and like, 'We'll cross that bridge when we get there,' kind of thing, whereas now I'm like, 'No, let's get in front of this, and let's think of how we can set ourselves up for success,'" she said. Paige said she feels more aware that people might not always be on her side, and it's on her to set up protections for herself and think through what could go wrong. She feels like a more prepared businesswoman because of the mindset shift. "I learned the hard way that mindset doesn't make me negative. I can still be very positive and hopeful and joyful in my craft, but there's a dark side to business," Paige told Business Insider. By not assuming the best of situations from the jump, Paige feels more prepared to take on curveballs when they hit her business. Protect yourself Paige also thinks having a strong legal team behind you is imperative if you're in business. "It's not glamorous, but hire a lawyer," she said. "Even with how amazing ChatGPT is and other resources that you can get online, nothing truly beats having a good legal team or a lawyer." Paige said leaning on those people when you're early in your career is particularly important, as it can help prevent you from making mistakes or releasing subpar products. "I know we're like, 'It's always good to have progress over perfection,' and yeah, I agree with that, but you don't want to be forcing yourself to get out there and be quick and miss some pivotal points in setting yourself up for success," Paige said.

Neighbor Leaves Garage Cracked Open, Who's Peering Underneath Goes Viral

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A recent TikTok video has captivated thousands, all thanks to a small act of kindness from a dog owner. The clip shows a garage door cracked open just enough for a dog to squeeze a flattened body underneath. The adorable moment reveals the pup splayed out on the ground, peeking under the door with a fixed gaze. Since the video was posted, it has received over 467,000 likes. The video's caption says the creator's neighbors "always crack their garage open so their dog can people watch." Stock image: A person opens their garage door. Stock image: A person opens their garage dog's posture and the owner's sweet gesture have turned the pup into an celebrity. The comments section of the video filled with users expressing their delight. "If not pancake, then why pancake shaped?" one person wrote, while another user added: "I love how it's not [open] enough that he can get out." "President of the neighborhood watch committee," a third wrote. The dog's commitment to its hobby resonated with other pet owners. One user shared a similar experience. "My dogs used to do that under the fence at my old house, just peeking up at people throwing their trash," they wrote. Many viewers also expressed their desire to join the dog in its pastime. "Ooh and in the shade too! The way I'd be lying down and talking to them like they were my shrink," a commenter posted. Another added: "You'd catch me laying on the ground petting him kicking my little feet having the time of my life." Dogs Love People Watching This isn't the first time that a dog's love for people-watching has gone viral. Newsweek previously reported on a black Labrador retriever who also loved to socialize from his yard. In that instance, the owner went so far as to carve a lookout hole into her fence, demonstrating the lengths owners will go to accommodate their curious pups. While the most-recent viral video captures a heartwarming moment of a dog enjoying a low-key hobby, experts say it is important for pet owners to keep their animals active. An August 2022 study published in PLOS One highlighted the importance of a balanced routine for pet health. "Dogs who exercise less frequently or less intensely are more likely to be overweight," the study said, concluding that "a more holistic approach to changing both dietary and exercise routine needs to be made" to treat obesity in canines. The dog in the garage video serves as a sweet reminder of the love between dogs and their owners, and the small ways that humans cater to their pets' unique personalities—all while reinforcing the importance of keeping furry friends happy and healthy. Newsweek reached out to @cm0n3yyyy for comment via TikTok.
