This Southern State Just Ranked No. 1 for Affordable Road Trips
Summer is coming, and that means it's the perfect time to take a road trip. And there are literally hundreds of options out there—but one unexpected destination was just named the best.
Travel deal publisher Dunhill Travel Deals recently conducted a study to find the best and most affordable road trips throughout the continental U.S. For its analysis, it considered several affordability metrics, such as hotel rates, gas prices, the cost of everyday expenses, as well as access to things like national parks, arts and culture attractions, and other kinds of entertainment businesses. It sourced its data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the U.S. Census Bureau, Construction Coverage (a construction insurance firm), and more.
After looking at all the factors, it found that Mississippi was the best and most affordable place to take a road trip in the U.S.
"Ranked as the best overall state for a budget-friendly road trip, Mississippi combines low travel costs with rich cultural and natural attractions," Dunhill Travels Deals wrote in its report.
The company also noted that in Mississippi, travelers can explore parts of the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile historic corridor once used by Native Americans that runs through Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.
Alternatively, drivers could take a trip on the Great River Road, an official National Scenic Byway which follows the Mississippi River. The Magnolia State is also known for its deep music history, and visitors can check out places like Tupelo (the birthplace of Elvis) as well as the Delta, the birthplace of the blues. Driving through Natchez Trace Parkway through Mississippi.Other affordable destinations include Arkansas and Oklahoma, places that let road warriors to save on gas and lodgings. Generally, states in the center and south of the country ranked among the highest for affordability, while coastal and western states tended to be more expensive overall.
California (perhaps unsurprisingly) has the highest gas prices in the country, along with a high cost of living that is 12 percent more than the average. However, California also has the highest number of visitors to its National Parks, as well as a high density of arts, entertainment, and recreation businesses.
After Mississippi, the top five best and most affordable road trip destinations round out with Arkansas at No. 2, followed respectively by North Carolina, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.

The second season of Fox Nation's "Art of the Surge" gives viewers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into Trump Force One, the signature Boeing 757-200 that carried the now-47th president from point A to point B during his high-stakes 2024 campaign. From the gleaming gold "TRUMP" lettering and dual engines to the American flag on its tail fin, the aircraft's exterior makes a bold statement. Its fuselage – white on bottom, navy on top, with the two colors divided by a red stripe — completes its unmistakably patriotic design. Episode four of the "Art of the Surge's" new season drops in on the aircraft's crew, who share with viewers what it's like to operate one of the most easily recognizable planes in the world. "We do flybys with it. The crowd loves it," Captain Hank Foley, who pilots the plane, said while seated in the cockpit. "It's probably the only 757 in the entire world that does flybys." A flyby – a deliberately low altitude pass over a crowd – is more common among military or high-performance aircraft. But on Foley's first day on the job, Trump requested one. "It went great. I came out, he gave me the thumbs up," Foley recalled. "He goes, 'You're on the news, Captain.'" Foley said that the plane typically cruises at an altitude of around 41,000 feet, flying at about 500 miles per hour. With a tailwind, that number jumps between 600 and 700. Also featured in the episode is flight attendant Deborah Spillari, who does her best to make sure everything onboard remains in working order. From getting meals together for guests to changing the TV channel to suit Trump's tastes, she keeps the experience seamless. "[Everything] does have to be perfect. No other way," she said while wiping down a portion of the interior and then showing off a guest room. "[This is where people have] meetings," Spillari shared. As much as I love experiencing different cultures and traversing new landscapes, there's something special about exploring your own backyard. Staycations are quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to relax, and I recently spent a week experiencing my own city as a tourist. I live in NYC, so there's plenty to explore. Throughout my week-long staycation, I visited museums, parks, landmarks, and more, and I gained a greater appreciation for the city along the way. Now, I'm revealing my five go-to staycation itineraries, along with the stylish summer outfits to match. Whether you're visiting NYC or romanticizing your own city, keep reading for elevated outfits to make you feel like a jet-setting traveler, wherever you are. Whenever I have a few days to kill, I make it a priority to see some of the world's best theater at Broadway and off-Broadway shows. To pass the time before the show, I'd head to Soho for some shopping. Soho has some of the most beautiful buildings (and people) New York has to offer—and near countless shops. On my ideal staycation, I'd partake in quite a bit of retail therapy before heading to the Theater District for an early dinner and a show. This itinerary calls for a slightly dressier outfit, but comfort is still key. After all, this day entails plenty of walking, standing in lines, and sitting for extended periods. Once you reach the bottom of Manhattan, you can hop on a ferry to Ellis Island—or just soak up views of Lady Liberty from Battery Park. Every time I get to cross into Brooklyn on a ferry, it's a treat—and this itinerary is packed with scenic views, on and off the boat. Hop on the South Brooklyn Route of the NYC ferry and get off at Brooklyn Bridge Park for casual dining options and an unbelievable view of Manhattan's skyline. Afterwards, you can check out Dumbo's beautiful cobblestone streets, flea markets, and art galleries. It's truly one of the most gorgeous parts of the city. Keep things casual for this day of sightseeing—but be prepared for candid photo opportunities. I'd pair relaxed barrel jeans with a summery eyelet top for a look that's equally comfy and stylish. I'd complete this ensemble with simple black flats that 'can be worn all day without pain or blisters', plus a classic straw tote that looks so summery. Love a great deal?
