Actors Give ‘Oppenheimer' the Noh Treatment in English; Performances to Mark 80th Anniversaries of A-Bombings

Yomiuri Shimbun22-07-2025
The ghost of physicist Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967), who led the development of the U.S. atomic bomb, is the main character of a noh play titled 'Oppenheimer,' which will be performed in English at Kita Noh Theater in the Meguro area of Tokyo, on Aug. 6 and 9.
The play will be presented by members of Theater Nohgaku, a group of mainly American performers studying noh. Marking 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it will raise questions about the nuclear threat as a global issue.
The play's setting is an old temple in Hiroshima. Speaking to a pilgrim, Oppenheimer's ghost admits his anguish over causing tragedy by making the atomic bombs. As he confesses, the ghost becomes prepared to take upon himself responsibility for the sin of inflicting suffering on mankind.
The production is organized by Theater Nohgaku and the Yanai Initiative, a collaboration between Waseda University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The work was written in 2015 and will be performed in Japan for the first time.
The music was composed by Theater Nohgaku member Richard Emmert, 75, a professor emeritus at Musashino University. He said it is significant to stage the performances on Aug. 6 and 9, the dates on which the two cities were bombed. John Oglevee, 54, who plays the lead role, said that noh is more of a prayer than a play. He hopes that everyone will remember the tragedy of the atomic bombings.
Yanai Initiative Director Michael Emmerich, 49, a professor at Waseda University and UCLA, said that nuclear arms are horrific devices that expose people to radiation at various stages of the weapons' development, manufacture, storage and dismantlement. He believes that having Theater Nohgaku, which brings together people from the United States and other countries, perform 'Oppenheimer' as an English noh play will strongly convey the message that nuclear weapons are a global problem.

Japan publisher sorry for column targeting people with foreign roots

TOKYO - A Japanese publisher apologized Monday for running a column in its weekly magazine last month that was criticized as discriminatory toward people with foreign roots and for promoting xenophobia. In the column in the July 31 issue of "Shukan Shincho," published by Shinchosha, journalist Masayuki Takayama discussed naturalization and attacked author Ushio Fukazawa -- who is of Korean descent -- for speaking out against discriminatory attitudes in Japan. Shinchosha said in a statement, "We offer our sincerest apologies. We are acutely aware of, and take responsibility for, our shortcomings as a publisher." "We recognize that while 'freedom of speech and expression' is extremely important, the scope of that freedom varies depending on the subject matter and social context, and changes over time," the publisher added. At a press conference the same day, Fukazawa said, "I wonder how frightened people with foreign roots must feel." She added, "I hope Japan remains a country where people from diverse backgrounds can live with pride." Comments condemning the column from around 40 individuals, including novelist Natsuo Kirino and manga artist Akiko Higashimura, were also presented. In the column, Takayama also bashed model Kiko Mizuhara for accusing a producer in the Japanese film industry of sexual harassment, saying, "She was born to an American and a Korean, and has absolutely no connection or ties to a Japanese." "It's hard to accept someone using a Japanese name while sounding as if they are exposing Japan from the inside. Shouldn't they speak openly under a foreign name instead?" he wrote. Shinchosha previously suspended publication of its monthly magazine "Shincho 45" after it was lambasted in 2018 for running a contributing piece that used a derogatory term to describe the LGBT community.

Tokyo train stations giving out awesome giant Pokémon cards, but you'll want to hurry

JR East's easy-to-complete Pokémon stamp rally can only last as long as its card supply does. It's often been said that the journey itself is more important than the destination. But you know what's even better? A journey that gets you some cool exclusive Pokémon merch. That sort of doesn't-matter-exactly-where-you-go philosophy is the underlying idea for rail operator East Japan Railway Company/JR East's Pokémon Stamp Rally 2025, which is going on right now in Tokyo. In a stamp rally, you start by receiving a sheet with blank spaces on it, then you travel to various stations on the train network where there are special stamps you use to fill up your sheet. When you're all done, you turn in the completed sheet and receive a prize. As far as stamp rallies go, the JR East Pokémon Stamp Rally 2025 is pretty easy to complete. Major stations in the Tokyo area give out the stamp sheet for free, and you only need six stamps to fill it up. With a total of 36 stations that have stamps in Tokyo and its neighboring prefectures of Chiba, Saitama, and Kanagawa, it's not hard to plot a route to complete your sheet, either as a dedicated course to follow all in one fell swoop or to fold into your other sightseeing plans. ▼ Map of the 36 stamp stations (we'll explain the 'Stage 2 stamps' in a bit) Each station's stamp features a different Pokémon species, and you can find the stamp itself by following the signs that say スタンプはこちら ('stamp this way') with an arrow, or by asking the station staff ' Pokémon no sutampu wa doko ni arimasu ka ?' The stamps are always located outside the ticket gates, by the way. ▼ A sign pointing the way to the Mega Ampharos stamp inside downtown Tokyo's Yoyogi Station Once you've got six stamps, bring your completed sheet to one of the New Days station convenience stores listed below… …where you'll then receive this awesome Pikachu ex Jumbo Card! As mentioned, with just six stamps this is a pretty quick and easy rally to complete, but that's because that's just Stage 1 of the Pokémon Stamp Rally 2025. For Stage 2, there are different prizes if you gather 12 or all 36 stamps…or at least there were. As you can probably guess, there are a lot of Pokémon fans in the greater Tokyo area, and Stage 2 supplies have already been depleted. Luckily, the Stage 1 rally is still going on, but while it's scheduled ending date is August 31, that might get moved up if they run out of Pikachu ex Jumbo Cards, so you'll want to get to rallying sooner rather than later.
