Microsoft and Databricks Expand Azure Databricks Access in Saudi Arabia

TECHx17-04-2025
Microsoft and Databricks have expanded their strategic partnership to make Azure Databricks more accessible to organizations across Saudi Arabia. This move supports the Kingdom's digital transformation goals and aligns with Saudi Vision 2030.
The collaboration combines Databricks' advanced data and AI tools with the secure and scalable infrastructure of Microsoft Azure. As a result, Saudi businesses will be able to enhance operations, develop data-driven solutions, and gain deeper insights from their data.
This expansion is designed to accelerate the adoption of AI and big data analytics. It also reflects both companies' commitment to supporting local innovation and building a strong data culture in the Kingdom.
Turki Badhris, President of Microsoft Arabia, stated that strengthening partnerships like this one helps Saudi organizations innovate and grow. He added that it also supports long-term national goals related to AI and data.
Mohammad Alzaubi, General Manager for Databricks in Saudi Arabia, said the partnership will help local organizations unlock the full value of their data. He emphasized the importance of access to Azure Databricks for driving AI initiatives and gaining a competitive advantage.
Some organizations are already seeing results. Cenomi Group, the largest retail and mall operator in the country, is using Azure Databricks to power its Data Lakehouse Architecture. This allows the company to analyze large volumes of data in real-time and improve customer experiences.
According to Binoo Joseph, Chief Digital Officer at Cenomi Centers, the integration of Azure Databricks has transformed their approach to data. It enables personalized promotions, better service delivery, and smarter decision-making across their malls.
Looking ahead, Microsoft and Databricks plan to introduce more training and certification programs. These initiatives will upskill local talent in data engineering and AI. They also aim to expand Azure Databricks integration through Microsoft's Enterprise Skills Initiative.
By improving access to Azure Databricks, the partnership is helping Saudi Arabia move toward a stronger digital economy. It supports innovation, boosts local capabilities, and contributes to the Kingdom's vision of becoming a global tech hub.

Microsoft workers protest at company HQ against Israeli ties

Microsoft employees rallied at the company's Redmond, Washington, headquarters to try to increase pressure on the company to stop doing business with Israel over its war in Gaza. Protesters started gathering on Tuesday afternoon at a plaza at the centre of a recently redeveloped part of the company's main base, which covers about 200 hectares in the suburban town. They set up tents and declared the space a 'liberated zone". Addressing 'friends and colleagues' through a microphone, former Microsoft employee and protest leader Hossam Nasr said: 'We are here because over 22 months of genocide, Israel — powered by Microsoft — has been killing, maiming Palestinian children every hour.' About an hour after the activists arrived, a Redmond police officer used his SUV speaker to warn they were trespassing and subject to arrest if they stayed. Soon after, the about three dozen demonstrators packed up their tents, rolled up their banners and departed the plaza. They reassembled on a slice of sidewalk that organisers said was public property. For more than a year, the Microsoft employee group No Azure for Apartheid, has been pushing Microsoft to end its relationship with Israel, saying use of the company's products is contributing to civilian deaths in Gaza. Azure, the company's cloud-computing division, sells on-demand software and data storage to businesses and governments, including Israeli government and military agencies. A handful of No Azure for Apartheid organisers have been fired for holding what Microsoft said was an unauthorised event on campus and disrupting speeches by executives. 'Microsoft is the most complicit digital arms manufacturer in Israel's genocide of Gaza,' Nisreen Jaradat, a Microsoft employee, said in a statement on Tuesday. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a blog post published in May, the company said it had 'found no evidence to date that Microsoft's Azure and AI technologies have been used to target or harm people in the conflict in Gaza". But Microsoft said this month that it had enlisted the law firm Covington & Burling to conduct a further review after a report that Israel's military surveillance agency intercepted millions of mobile phone calls made by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and stored them on Azure servers. That trove helped the military choose bombing targets in Gaza, according to reporting by The Guardian newspaper and other outlets. The activists took their inspiration from protests staged on at least 100 US university campuses since the war in Gaza began. Students at schools such as Columbia University pitched tents and called for their colleges to divest financial holdings tied to Israel and US weapons makers, in many cases sparking disciplinary action from administrators.

Plastic-free badges and cups, replacing single-use plastic bottles with glass, and donating used food to workers are some of the visible steps attendees may notice next month. Meanwhile, QR code-driven marketing, reusable exhibition structures, and biofuel-powered logistics all ensure the shows are designed with environmental responsibility in mind.

Databricks eyes over $100 billion valuation as investors back AI growth plans

Analytics firm Databricks said on Tuesday its valuation was set to jump 61% to more than $100 billion in a funding round less than a year after its last, underscoring strong investor demand for artificial intelligence startups. The San Francisco, California-based company — with 15,000 customers, including payments firm Block, energy giant Shell and electric-vehicle maker Rivian — said it has signed a term sheet for a Series K round, but did not disclose the amount it was raising. Late last year, Databricks had raised $10 billion in one of the largest venture capital funding rounds in history, which valued it at $62 billion. The company expects to use a portion of the latest funds in product development and for mergers and acquisitions in the AI segment, as corporations and governments worldwide rush to leverage efficiencies from the nascent but rapidly evolving technology. "Databricks is benefiting from an unprecedented global demand for AI apps and agents, turning companies' data into goldmines. We're thrilled this round is already over-subscribed," said Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO. Startups are choosing to stay private for longer amid higher interest rates and unpredictable market appetite for initial public offerings over the past few years. Capital is also available for larger late-stage rounds as private market investors sit on record levels of dry powder. OpenAI is also in talks to close an employee share sale, which would value the ChatGPT parent at around $500 billion, Reuters had reported earlier this month.
