Built in 1951, the Magic Beach Motel -and its iconic flamingos- have stood the test of time in Vilano Beach for the local community.
'It's a part of Florida that brought all the tourism here to begin within the '50s and '60s', says John Mock, a resident of Vilano Beach.
However, despite lasting this long, the property's new prospective owners are asking that the site be torn down, filing a demolition permit within St. Johns County.
An excerpt from the Cultural Resource Management cites 'rising insurance and financing costs', as well as 'prone to flooding in extreme conditions such as hurricanes' as the main reason for the proposed plans.
Some residents like Mike Milillo, a 40-year resident of Vilano Beach, say that while the Magic Beach Motel is historic, it shouldn't stand in the way of something new replacing it. However, many residents disagree.
'It would be horrible if they knock this down. This is just a piece of history here' says Laura Mock, resident of Vilano Beach.
Residents like Mock are calling on like-minded neighbors to make their concerns known at tomorrow's meeting.
'I think everybody needs to take time to go and show up so that we can keep this beautiful piece of history right where it is,' says Mock
The meeting is planned to start at 1:30 pm at the St. Johns County Building Department.

A Georgia summer vacation destination has been rated a top hidden gem. St. Simons Island is being hailed as U.S. News & World Report's No. 1 Underrated Vacation Destination. 'Though the largest Golden Isle is a summer staple for Georgians, it's often overlooked by out-of-state beachgoers in favor of Florida and South Carolina locales,' a recent U.S. News ranking article states. 'This dreamy barrier island is home to stately live oaks, dune-lined beaches, maritime forests and quaint shopping villages, lending it a peaceful, laid-back atmosphere even during peak season.' The vacation ranking was compiled using reader and editor feedback. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] Click here to download the free Action News Jax news and weather apps, click here to download the Action News Jax Now app for your smart TV and click here to stream Action News Jax live.

City of St. Augustine showcases potential Nights of Lights traffic changes

With the Nights of Lights festival only 7 months away, the City of St. Augustine is taking action now in hopes of improving the significant traffic congestion and parking issues seen this past year. Some of the changes the city is proposing are to restrict public parking in downtown neighborhoods during the event, redirect traffic, and increase their satellite parking and shuttling. Previous coverage: St. Augustine leaders vote to shorten Nights of Lights celebration St. Augustine votes to restrict mobile vendor locations during Nights of Lights, 4th of July 'We've asked DOT to dedicate one of the lanes on San Marco Avenue that connects the county to the city as a dedicated transit lane, so the shuttle can get through traffic congestion,' said St. Augustine City Manager David Birchim. Another change the city is considering is banning parallel parking on Cathedral Place during the festival. Scott York owns four businesses in Downtown St. Augustine. He says, although some of the proposed changes might impact his businesses during the festival, he's pleased with the action the city is taking. I'm not necessarily thrilled about it, but I'm willing to give anything a shot to make this a better event.' The city has one more stakeholder meeting on June 10th. After that, the city will compile all the feedback they've gotten from the public and present their plan to the city commission during their second meeting in June. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter]
