‘Name like that of a don evokes fear': Aligarh MP writes to Centre to rename 131yo Daud Khan rly station
Agra: Aligarh's BJP MP Satish Gautam has urged Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to rename the Daud Khan railway station in his constituency to 'Maharana Pratap Station', saying the existing name resembles that of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and "evokes fear among locals". In a letter sent to Vaishnaw on Monday, a copy of which has been accessed by TOI, Gautam wrote: "There is no village named Daud Khan in the area, nor is there any historical relevance of this name. The regional public demands that the name of the railway station be changed to that of the great ruler Maharana Pratap Singh, who made many historical contributions to the country. Therefore, you are humbly requested to change the name of the above railway station as soon as possible. " He said the station, built in 1894 according to locals, has "no historical relevance" and added that there is no nearby Muslim village that justifies the name. On Tuesday, Gautam said he was confident the minister would approve his request, citing Vaishnaw's "positive mindset" and "track record of new initiatives". Explaining his demand, the MP told reporters, "The name 'Daud' is associated with a terrorist who took many innocent lives, including those of several sisters and daughters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He spread fear across Maharashtra and is an enemy of the nation. People hesitate to even say his name. " Locals, however, opposed the proposal, saying the focus should shift from "name politics" to public welfare. "The MP's proposal to rename Daud Khan station reflects a pattern. Since BJP came to power, it has focused on renaming places. I don't think these changes bring any real benefit, they only stir public sentiment. BJP should move beyond name politics and focus on real development and public welfare," said Mohammad Kamran, a local.

Electronics manufacturing: One more cluster approved for Tamil Nadu, says Vaishnaw, rail sector also sees fresh boost
The Centre has approved a third electronics manufacturing cluster for Tamil Nadu, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday, reinforcing the state's growing role in India's electronics production landscape. The move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making Tamil Nadu a major electronics manufacturing hub, he added. Vaishnaw, who holds the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and IT, and Railways, made the announcement via video conference during an event at IIT Madras. 'One more electronics manufacturing cluster has been approved recently and I hope to see its construction very soon,' the minister said, adding that the state will gain modern amenities through such initiatives, as quoted PTI. Focus on mobile, laptop, server production The Centre is placing major thrust on mobile phones, laptops, and server manufacturing in Tamil Nadu, Vaishnaw said, citing a string of ongoing and planned investments. 'Many new projects in mobile phone, laptop and server manufacturing are now getting set up in Tamil Nadu,' he said. In March 2025, the minister had announced the setting up of two electronics clusters worth Rs 1,112 crore in Tamil Nadu, including one linked to Zetwerk Electronics' new plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai. These clusters will support the production of electronic components for consumer durables and IT hardware, catering to both domestic and international markets, he had said at the time. Vaishnaw, however, did not disclose investment details related to the newly approved third cluster. On the railways front, Vaishnaw highlighted Tamil Nadu's emerging role as a manufacturing hub for high-strength wheels used in locomotives and high-speed trains. 'They are now getting manufactured at a factory near Chennai. Railways has fully supported that factory so Tamil Nadu will become the hub for wheel manufacturing also,' he said. The minister also reiterated that Tamil Nadu is already a hub for Vande Bharat train manufacturing, reinforcing the state's position as a key node in the Indian Railways' infrastructure push. Addressing the audience during the launch of Tamil AI project through video conference, Mr. Vaishnaw said Tamil AI is a path-breaking initiative and will make a big impact on the way Indian languages get incorporated to mission AI. 'We are following our Prime Minister's vision of democratising technology. In the field of AI, we have set up an AI mission where our entire thrust is on developing common compute facility solutions which can be used in our country. I hope Tamil AI will bring a big difference in the way AI gets integrated with one of the oldest language, Tamil, ' said Mr. Vaishnaw. The Railway Minister also said Tamil Nadu is a major manufacturing centre for the Vande Bharat trains and the entire country is happy using the Vande Bharat services.
