This enormous consumption fuels millions of deaths annually from diseases like cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses. Cigarette smoking remains particularly high in low- and middle-income countries, where regulations may be weaker. The sheer volume of cigarette smoke also contributes significantly to environmental pollution. The Science Behind Smoking Addiction The addictive nature of nicotine makes quitting difficult, leading to long-term dependence and repeated exposure to toxic chemicals.
