Entire family of five killed in horror rental car crash in Portugal

Four members of the one family have tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision in a hire car they had just rented at Faro Airport, Portugal.
The victims include 20 year old twins, their 55 year old father and their 51 year old mother. The 19 year old girlfriend of one of the siblings also perished in the horrific accident, which claimed the life of a Portuguese man travelling alone in the other vehicle involved in the crash.
It's believed the group was heading north from the Algarve towards Mourao in the district of Evora, near the Spanish border, around 1.40am this morning when disaster struck on the IP2 main road in Castro Verde, roughly halfway to their final destination.
It comes on the same day a man in his 60s lost his life in single vehicle road traffic collision in Co. Tipperary.
Police sources close to the investigation confirmed that all four family members killed were British passport holders, despite the parents of the twins originally hailing from Mourao and returning to the municipality for holidays.
They added that the twins were both born in the UK, despite Mourao Town Hall describing all four as originating from the municipality but residing in Britain. The girlfriend of one of the boys is believed to be of Polish origin but also lived in the UK, reports the Mirror.
The family's residence in Britain or when they emigrated from the UK remains unknown, but the man travelling alone in the other car has been identified locally as Ruben Goncalves.

Mr Gonclaves is understood to have been from a town in Portugal called Almodovar. He was travelling south on the IP2.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident are currently under investigation by the local GNR police force, it has been confirmed. Mourao's town hall officials have declared two days of mourning starting from tomorrow.
A spokesman stated: "The Municipal Council of Mourao has decreed two days of municipal mourning, effective from tomorrow, Sunday, following the death of five family members involved in a traffic accident last night on the IP2, near Castro Verde.
"The Municipality, in coordination with the family and law enforcement authorities, namely the local GNR Post in Castro Verde, obtained the number plate of the vehicle they were travelling in and confirmed the identity of the passengers at 3:35 p.m today.
"There were four occupants in the car, all from Mourao, and a young woman with ties to the family. Residents of England, they were travelling from Faro to Mourao for their usual and well-deserved holiday.
"It is with great sadness that the Municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
"We inform you that all activities and events organised by the Municipality are cancelled for the entire weekend."

Major update on suspected Jihadi arrested over fire attack on Conor McGregor pub

A suspected Islamic extremist is back in prison this evening after gardai investigating an arson attack on a pub owned by Conor McGregor released him without charge. The Mirror has confirmed that the suspected Jihadi was returned to prison on Saturday evening – 24 hours after his arrest. The man was arrested on Friday by detectives from the Garda's main anti-terror outfit the Special Detective Unit, or SDU, as part of the investigation into the July 25 arson attack on Mr McGregor's Black Forge Inn in south Dublin. Flammable liquid was poured at the entrance of the €2million pub before being set on fire. Emergency services quickly extinguished the blaze and nobody was hurt. Gardai have been investigating the incident ever since and made their move against the suspect on Friday He was taken out of a prison in Leinster that afternoon on a so-called section 42 warrant – a required judicial approval to take an inmate out of jail. Conor McGregor in the Black Forge Inn (Image: Instagram/ Conor McGregor) Officers had the power to hold the suspect for 24 hours and he was released without charge on Saturday evening - and was promptly returned to the custody of the Irish Prison Service. Gardai have confirmed to The Mirror that the suspect was released without charge on Saturday evening – but the force added that investigations were continuing. A spokesman told us: 'The individual was released without charge on Saturday evening. Investigations are ongoing.' The investigation into the July 25 attack in Walkinstown, south Dublin was being led by gardai from Crumlin station – but the Mirror revealed on Saturday that the SDU was now leading the probe. The man is currently before the courts over an alleged serious assault – but we cannot identify that incident for legal reasons. But we can reveal that SDU are now involved in both investigations and are examining the theory that both were linked to Islamic extremism. The Black Forge Inn, Walkinstown. (Image: IDSLegacyArchive) The SDU is the Garda's main anti-terror squad – and is tasked with facing down Islamic extremist suspects here, as well as the more traditional role of tackling dissident republicans. Gardai confirmed the SDU arrested a man over the arson attack in a statement to the Mirror on Saturday morning. The statement said: 'Gardaí attached to An Garda Síochána's Special Detective Unit have arrested a male in connection with the investigation into Criminal Damage at a licensed premises in the South Dublin area on Friday, 25th of July 2025. 'The male, aged in his 20s, was arrested yesterday, 8th of August 2025 and remains detained at a Garda station in the Dublin region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. 'An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.' On Sunday, Mr McGregor, who says he is planning to run for president in the elections later this year, posted an image on X of the Mirror's Saturday story that broke news of the suspected extremist's arrest - and said he had helped gardai identify the man within hours of the attack. Mr McGregor's post on X/Twitter on Sunday about the arrest (Image: X/Twitter) He added: 'Know a man by his enemies. 'Ireland, as your President, all radical, extremist ideologies will be swiftly dealt with. I will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the peace, safety, and prosperity of our citizens! 'Your land secured. Your wealth secured. Your future secured. 'We located this violent perpetrator within hours alongside An Garda Síochana who have now sent their file to the DPP! Ex-Kinahan Cartel associate expands coffee business with new venture in Dublin 8

Dean Howe last year opened up coffee outlet Gulliver's in the Liberties alongside former prison pal and senior Cartel figure Liam Brannigan The address of Howe and Brannigan's new business Ex-Kinahan Cartel crim Dean Howe has expanded his city centre coffee business – registering a new venture operating at an address in Dublin 8. Howe – who last year opened up coffee outlet Gulliver's in the Liberties alongside former prison pal and senior Cartel figure Liam Brannigan – has registered the name of a second coffee business with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). Both Howe and Brannigan were released from prison in 2023 after serving sentences for a thwarted plot to murder a Hutch associate, who cannot be named for legal reasons. Documents obtained by the Sunday World show Howe has registered 'Coffee Filtrtation (sic) Solutions' as operating out of a property in Oakfield Place on the South Circular Road in Dublin 8 on July 2. The address of Howe and Brannigan's new business When the Sunday World visited the address this week, there was no sign of any commercial activity at what appeared to be a private residence. Howe listed the business's activities as 'beverage serving activities.' Registering a business name rather than setting up a company means there is no obligation on Howe to file accounts for either business. An expert in company law told the Sunday World, as long as earnings are disclosed to Revenue, this is a wholly legitimate way to structure a business. Dean Howe at his coffee shop in Dublin's Liberties News in 90 seconds - 10th August 2025 Howe's move to register a second business title with the CRO comes nine months after this newspaper revealed how he and Brannigan had gone into business together pushing high-quality imported Colombian product on the streets of Dublin. Gulliver's, which opened over the summer, operates out of a hatch beside a bicycle shop on Patrick Street, near St Patrick's Cathedral. Advertising the shop, they said there was 'nothing better than a coffee and a pastry after a good ride'. They described their business as a 'giant amongst others' and offer coffees, teas, soft drinks and food including crepes, protein balls and sandwiches. They also offer a delivery service. The Sunday World photographed Howe smiling and serving customers through the hatch in the stall last November, with many of those unlikely to be aware their barista has links to Ireland's most notorious Cartel. However, another visitor was probably more acquainted with the owners. British boxer Sunny Edwards, who was signed to Cartel boss Daniel Kinahan's and Matthew Macklin's boxing stable MTK and has staunchly defended him in the past, dropped by for a coffee in August. Howe and Brannigan's current coffee shop The former IBF flyweight champion was one of several fighters to publicly back Kinahan's MTK gym 'as a legitimate business' and describe the Cartel boss as an 'old friend' before later cutting ties. Howe was released from prison in 2023 after serving four-and-a -half years for conspiracy to murder a Hutch associate in 2017. The Hutch associate cannot be named as he is currently before the courts on serious charges. Howe pleaded guilty after being caught on secret Garda recordings helping to plan the hit. Howe's role was to carry out surveillance on the target and tracked his movements before passing on the information to a separate team of would-be assassins, which included known hitmen Alan and Luke Wilson. Howe was previously arrested over the shooting of notorious Dublin gangster Martin 'The Viper' Foley on the orders of the Cartel in 2008 but was never charged. Foley was hit six times but survived the attack. Howe was also quizzed by gardaí about a hit attempt on John Hutch – a brother of Gerry Hutch – but was released without charge. Liam Brannigan is a cousin of senior Cartel figures, including 'Fat Freddie' Thompson and Liam Byrne, who was jailed in the UK for a weapons plot designed to get Thomas 'Bomber' Kavanagh a lesser sentence on organised crime offences. In 2020, the Special Criminal Court found Brannigan, of Bride Street, Dublin, guilty of being at the 'centre of the wheel' of the Kinahan Cartel plot to gun down the Hutch associate. Mr Justice Paul Coffey said the evidence against Brannigan derived from four areas, including covert audio recordings from several cars bugged by gardaí. Armed officers intercepted a Volkswagen Caddy van just 500 yards from the target's home on the night of November 6, 2017, when two men, Joseph Kelly and Luke Wilson, were found with a loaded semi-automatic pistol. According to local sources, Gulliver's has proven a hit with staff with local businesses in the Liberties and enjoys a healthy passing trade.

Club pays tribute to UK footballer twins, 20, killed along with mum, dad & 2 others in horror Portugal head on crash

A FOOTBALL club has vowed tragic twins Afonso and Domingos will be 'never forgotten' after they were among six killed in a horror head-on smash in Portugal. The 20-year-old siblings, their dad Domingos Serrano, 55, wife Maria Joao, 51, and two others all died in the early hours of Saturday. 5 A football club has paid tribute to twins, 20, and parents, 55 & 51, killed in head-on smash in Portugal Credit: 5 Domingos and Afonso, 20, used to play at Thetford Town Youth FC Credit: Solarpix 5 The family had just rented a Nissan Juke at Faro Airport before they smashed into another vehicle on the IP2 main road near Castro Verde. The 19-year-old girlfriend of one of the twins – believed to be of Polish origin but living in the UK – was also killed, along with the other driver, 36-year-old Ruben Goncalves. Local reports said Goncalves, from Almodovar, worked at the Neves-Corvo zinc-copper mine and had a four-year-old son. Thetford Town Youth FC, where the twins once played, paid tribute in a heartfelt Facebook post. It read: 'Thetford Town Football Club would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the Serrano family and the local Portuguese community after the recent tragedy while on holiday. 'Afonso and Domingo's were both an integral part of our U18's team in recent years, both brothers sadly passed away in Portugal with their parents and friends in a tragic car accident.' The club said their loss would leave a 'massive void' in the local community, signing off with a Portuguese phrase meaning: 'They are gone, but they will never be forgotten.' It added in a separate post: 'They will be sadly missed. Condolences to all their family. Rest in peace.' Shocked locals have also shared their condolences online. Heidi Smith commented: 'Absolute shock a lovely family and will be missed.' Brit granddad, 62, 'was in RELATIONSHIP with daughter-in-law, 33, he tried to drown in Florida resort pool' Michelle Jermy added: 'Absolutely heartbreaking. Such a loss, condolences to all those grieving and thinking of family, friends and the wider community processing the pain from this sad news. Rest in peace.' Louise McLaughlin, from Thetford, said: 'Absolutely heartbreaking. Rest in peace.' Tania Marques Da Cruz wrote: 'My most sincere condolences to all those killed. I hope their souls rest in peace. 'It's so sad to hear of people leaving their homeland and friends in search of a better life and then have their lives end like this. How unfair life is.' Cesar Caleiro said: 'My sincere condolences to the loved ones of those killed. Mourao must rally round to comfort the families of the victims.' The crash happened around 1.40am on a stretch of road where the speed limit is 49mph. The family – originally from Mourao in the Evora district but long settled in England – had landed at Faro Airport just hours earlier and were driving north for their summer break. Domingos, believed to live in Thetford, Norfolk, had celebrated his 55th birthday only two days before boarding the flight to Portugal. A source close to the investigation said the wreckage was so severe 'officers could only recover half a number plate' before piecing together who was inside. The grim discovery came after the couple's daughter called police, unable to reach her parents or brothers after hearing about the crash. The insider said: 'With the information she gave them officers made checks with the hire car firm at Faro Airport and tragically discovered a match. 'That was how they were able to confirm the identities of the five occupants in the car with the four members of the same family inside.' The GNR police force is investigating the cause of the smash. Mourao town hall has declared two days of mourning from Sunday. A spokesman said: 'There were four occupants in the car, all from Mourao, and a young woman with ties to the family. 'Residents of England, they were traveling from Faro to Mourao for their usual and well-deserved vacation. 'It is with great sadness that the Municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims. 'We inform you that all activities and events promoted by the Municipality are cancelled for the entire weekend.' 5 Twins Domingos and Afonso, 20, dad Domingos Serrano, 55, and mum Maria Joao, 51, died in a horror car crash in Portugal Credit: Solarpix
