Whitecaps say 'significant number' of players, staff are ill following CONCACAF Champions Cup defeat in Mexico
The White announced Thursday that a "significant number" of players and staff developed "gastrointestinal symptoms" following the team' return from Mexico. The team said that it had cancelled practice on Wednesday as a result of the widespread illness, calling it a "precautionary measure" after consulting with medical staff.

"The health and well-being of our players and staff remain our top priority. Each player has been provided with an individualized program by the medical and performance staff to support their continued preparation and recovery," the team said in the statement. "We are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available."
Players who were cleared had individual closed sessions in place of team practice on Wednesday. Per the club, each player has an "individualized program" to address their personal recovery.
The Whitecaps aren't the only MLS team whose Concacaf tournament was marred by tummy troubles: A similar situation happened last year with Columbus Crew. A huge number of Crew players and staff struggled with a gastrointestinal illness ahead of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup final against Pachuca, also held in Mexico.
The team doctor later surmised that the team had suffered food poisoning. Columbus went on to lose the game 3-0.

"My players gave everything knowing that they were sick," Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy said at the time, adding that much of the team and staff had been suffering from diarrhea the day before the game. Nancy later said that he believed the tournament's final should take place at a neutral site, pointing to the food poisoning illness.
Regardless of the malady, MLS teams have not had a very good run in the Concacaf Champions Cup (formerly known as the Concacaf Champions League). Since the tournament was changed to its modern format in 2008, only one MLS club — the Seattle Sounders — have won the cup. The other titles have all gone to Liga MX squads.

Going forward, it's not entirely clear how many players the Whitecaps will be able to field for the next few games. In addition to the players out with illness, Vancouver has nine players that will be leaving the club during the international window — the second most in MLS.
Vancouver hosts the Sounders on Sunday, before traveling to play the Crew on June 14.

Lionel Messi injury: Inter Miami star will miss Leagues Cup game vs Pumas UNAM
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Lionel Messi won't play in Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Pumas UNAM on Aug. 6, coach Javier Mascherano said a day before the game. Messi, who Inter Miami announced has a minor muscle injury in his upper right leg, did not practice with teammates during their training session before their final Leagues Cup group match. Mascherano did not divulge a timetable for Messi's potential return, but said the club's diagnosis of Messi's injury is 'good news.' 'He's a special player, and he normally recovers from the injuries quickly,' Mascherano said. 'Once he's ready, he'll come back.' Inter Miami has a prime opportunity to advance to the Leagues Cup knockout stage with a win against Pumas. They are in third place on the MLS side of the Leagues Cup table, where the top four clubs from MLS and Liga MX will advance to the quarterfinals. However, they'll have to do so without one of the greatest players of all time. 'This is a competition that brings very good memories for the club,' Mascherano said, referring to Inter Miami's 2023 Leagues Cup title won shortly after Messi's arrival to MLS. 'We'll try to play the best game that we can, and try to win the game.' Watch Leagues Cup matches on MLS Season Pass When is Inter Miami vs. Pumas UNAM in Leagues Cup match? South Korean superstar Son Heung-min is signing with LAFC for MLS record transfer fee
LAFC's signing of South Korean national team captain Son Heung-min appears to be one of those rare acquisitions that checks every box and helps everybody. Not only is it one of the most significant signings in MLS history, but it instantly makes LAFC better while boosting the World Cup hopes of the Korean national team and the profile of Korean soccer in the U.S. But in few places will the impact of the signing, which is expected to be completed Tuesday, be felt more directly than in Southern California's Korean community, the largest in the U.S. 'The Korean community has been buzzing ever since rumors of Son Heung-min's potential move to LAFC began to spread,' said Kyeongjun Kim, a writer with The Korean Daily, the largest Korean-language media outlet in the U.S. 'The fact that a player of his caliber is coming to L.A. is monumental event. 'Son's move to the LAFC is as exciting — if not moreso — than when Chan-ho Park and Hyun-jin Ryu joined the Dodgers.' Luring Son, 33, away from Tottenham of the English Premier League, where he spent the last 10 seasons, came at a high price though. Although financial details of the signing were not announced, a league official with knowledge of the negotiations said the transfer fee easily topped the MLS-record $22 million Atlanta United paid to Middlesbrough in February for the rights to striker Emmanuel Latte Lath. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, put the price at $26 million, more than LAFC's total payroll of nearly $22.4 million, which is sixth-highest in the league. Yet, strangely, that could still prove to be something of a bargain and represents another signing coup for general manager John Thorrington who, over the past four seasons, has signed Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud, the most-capped and highest scorer for the French national team, respectively; Giorgio Chiellini and Gareth Bale, captains of the Italian and Welsh national teams, respectively; and Denis Bouanga, who led the MLS in goals in the last two full seasons. Thorrington didn't have to break the bank to do any of it. LAFC earned $10 million from it's participation in this summer's Club World Cup, money it then invested in Son. And despite the massive transfer fee, the team could actually profit financially from the deal since it has long believed a Korean star playing in Los Angeles would more than pay for itself in marketing and sponsorship deals, much the same way the Dodgers have profited off Japan's Shohei Ohtani. Kim said that's a very good bet. 'The passion and influence of Korean and Korean-American soccer fans should never be underestimated,' he said, noting that major European clubs with Korean players have begun posting online content in Korean. 'Korean broadcasters,' he predicted 'may seek to acquire broadcasting rights and new business opportunities could emerge. Son's arrival at LAFC will benefit not only the club but also the league as a whole.' The impact won't be limited to the Korean community, however. Son, who was one of the most popular players in the Premier League, speaks English well and has a positive and humble personality, which will make him easy to market across ethnic boundaries. 🚨 BREAKING: Charlotte complete free transfer for Harry Toffolo
Dean Smith's Charlotte have secured vital defensive reinforcements after completing a move for former Nottingham Forest left-back Harry Toffolo. [recent video] In a [confirmed length of contract] deal, the 29-year-old former England youth international joins up with the Crown amid some of their best form of the current 2025 MLS season, while questions remain surrounding their frailties at the back. Toffolo was previously a standout performer at the City Ground as the club re-established itself in the top flight of the English pyramid, with other postings across a journeyman career including Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Scunthorpe United, and Swindon Town. Charlotte, despite being on a current run of form that sees them reaching the MLS Cup playoffs as things stand, is posting one of the worst defensive records in the Eastern Conference. Toffolo's experience at the back, hopefully, will prove decisive for Smith and company. 📸 Alex Pantling - 2025 Getty Images
