But uncertainty over Rodgers has stunned Celts legend O'Neill.
And in an exclusive interview with SunSport to mark the 25th anniversary of his own Celts appointment, the former gaffer has urged his countryman to sign an extended new contract.
He said: 'I wasn't aware that Brendan only had one more year to run on his contract, but I would have thought Celtic want to keep him at the club.
'And hopefully he would want to stay. He's set a very good standard there.
'I'm also thinking that the brush he had with the Champions League would encourage him to give it another go in the next few years.
'I actually believe the new format suits Celtic.
'Going in again next season will give the players, staff, board and support something to look forward to.
'And I'd be hopeful that Brendan would want that for next season, and the season after.
'With that in mind, I'd be really surprised if he didn't stay on. I certainly hope he does.'
O'Neill also insists it's vital for Celts that rivals Rangers become stronger.
Awkward moment Martin O'Neill calls out Brendan Rodgers over 2019 Celtic exit to Leicester
The Ibrox club finished 17 points behind Rodgers' champions after a disastrous campaign.
Gers are close to appointing a new boss to replace sacked Philippe Clement, with major investment incoming from their new owners.
O'Neill added: 'I spoke to Graeme Souness about this just the other day.
'I was saying how Rangers need to get their act together, for want of a better expression.
'I genuinely believe them being strong helps Celtic.
'Obviously they are looking for a manager, and that will be the start of them making inroads.
'There's also been big talk about investment.
'In a one-off game, Rangers have proved they can beat Celtic.
'But can they find the consistency required?
'Can they go away from home and win the matches they are maybe expected to win?
'That hasn't happened in the last couple of years with this team.'

The season incoming Rangers boss Russell Martin was behind only Barcelona and Man City in Europe for possession stats
RANGERS fans will be wondering what to expect under their new manager as Ibrox chiefs close in on the appointment of Philippe Clement's successor. SunSport understands Russell Martin is in the final stages of negotiations over personal terms and is expected to be the next man in the hot-seat. Advertisement 3 Russell Martin is set to be named the new Rangers manager Credit: Getty 3 The Scot is expected to head back up north and back to Ibrox Credit: Getty It's an appointment that will have mixed feelings after the former Gers and Scotland defender was sacked by relegation-stricken Southampton in December. But should he officially land the job then Gers supporters can certainly expect possession-based free-flowing football in Govan next season, at the very least. Martin, 39, has stuck by that style at every club he has been, and it was the reason he became a sought-after young coach in the first place. He was hailed for his approach at MK Dons and Swansea but it came back to bite him in the Premier League this season with the Saints. Advertisement At one stage he even had one of his teams competing with Europe's elite in the possession department. In 2021, Martin's MK Dons had the third-highest average possession share in the whole continent, with Barcelona and Manchester City leading the way. The English side had an average share of 63.82 per cent, compared to Pep Guardiola's men in second place with 63.84 per cent and Barcelona at 65.11 per cent. In early March that year, MK Dons set a British record of scoring a goal against Gillingham to cap a move which comprised of 56 consecutive passes. Advertisement The 39-year-old spoke about his methodology on The Rest is Football podcast last month. He said: "After a year and a bit of working with the players and believe so much in something and you convince them of something. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed "To then go by the way you are not good enough to do this now so you're going to have to change... "My feeling is I have learned a lot. Will I do things differently? No in terms of build up and trying to dominate the ball. Advertisement "I changed formation too much but the concept doesn't change. "You recognise where the space is, spare man and find him, and we will take territory as quick as we can. "Sometimes it will take 20 passes sometimes one, but you need to feel it, live it and do it together and work out. "But the problem was we weren't winning, so rather than being really consistent with the shape, and this is how we defend. Advertisement "I was overthinking a bit and going we need to change shape for this game because of this." 3 Martin revealed his style of play received plaudits from Manchester City boss Guardiola and his players. He added: "There were brilliant bits and played City away. Advertisement "It looked great at times, we broke through City's press a lot. "Pep Guardiola was amazingly complimentary and their players were surprised by the level of capability of the players, the way we played through them. "But we had five defenders, we had two full backs playing wing back and we couldn't finish it off so the balance was a bit skewed that's what I've learned." He also enjoyed a 25-game unbeaten run in the English Championship with Southampton. Advertisement A record-breaking number of passes was set by Southampton under Martin in their opening game against Sheffield Wednesday, with 931 successful passes and 477 in the first half. UEFA and FIFA make crucial rule change after Champions League controversy
Football's lawmakers Ifab have confirmed a change following Julian Alvarez's "double touch" penalty being disallowed in Atletico Madrid's shootout defeat to Real in the Champions League The "double touch" penalty rules have been changed after the controversy that engulfed Julian Alvarez's disallowed kick in Atletico Madrid's Champions League knockout defeat to neighbours Real. Former Man City star Alvarez had his attempt from 12 yards ruled out after appearing to accidentally touch the ball twice. Thousands of Atletico fans had celebrated the goal and the scoreboard inside the Wanda Metropolitano showed that the shootout was level at 2-2. However after Real stars protested referee Szymon Marciniak made the decision to rule out the goal following a VAR review before Real subsequently progressed to the quarter-finals, where they were outclassed by Arsenal. Atletico, via La Liga, had submitted a complaint about the rule following their round of 16 exit. And from now on such slips will see kicks retaken after the game's lawmakers IFAB confirmed a change. Article 14.1 of the laws of the game which reads: 'The kicker must not play the ball again until it has touched another player. The penalty kick is completed when the ball stops moving, goes out of play or the referee stops play for any offence.' But in a circular memo released by Ifab, clarifications have been provided around the rare instances of a "double touch". '(When) the penalty taker accidentally kicks the ball with both feet simultaneously or the ball touches their non-kicking foot or leg immediately after the kick: If the kick is successful, it is retaken," the memo said. 'If the kick is unsuccessful, an indirect free kick is awarded (unless the referee plays advantage when it clearly benefits the defending team) or, in the case of penalties (penalty shoot-out), the kick is recorded as missed.' IFAB added that it was 'understandable' that referees had up until now decided to disallow spot-kicks scored in such situations. It said that the "clarified procedures are effective for competitions starting on or after 1 July" but can be applied this month - including for the Club World Cup which begins next week.
