Kerala minister boycotts event over Bharat Mata photograph
Kerala minister P Prasad boycotted a World Environment Day sapling plantation event at the governor's house in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday over the showering of flowers on a Bharat Mata photograph, which he insisted is associated mainly with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s ideological fount, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The row comes days after both the ruling Left Democratic Front and the Opposition United Democratic Front criticised the use of the photograph at an event related to Operation Sindoor, India's cross-border anti-terror strikes last month, at the governor's house. Prasad said the plantation programme schedule was changed on Wednesday with the addition of the flower showering. 'Such a ritual has never been part of official events at the Raj Bhavan [governor's house]...,' said Prasad, who planted saplings separately after skipping the Raj Bhavan event. Prasad, a Communist Party of India (CPI) leader, said they told officials that such a photograph must not be used at a government event, especially in a constitutional office. 'It is against the Constitution. The governor's office insisted on it. We are not against Bharat have often kids dressing up as Bharat Mata at government events and official Onam celebrations,' said Prasad. CPI leader Binoy Viswam criticised the Raj Bhavan for using the photograph of Bharat Mata carrying a saffron flag for the event. 'Will the photograph of Bharat Mata be complete only if she holds the RSS flag? Will it be complete only if she stands by a lion? The Raj Bhavan should never have become a platform for such adamant stands of the RSS,' Viswam said. Opposition Congress leader VD Satheesan echoed Viswam. 'Raj Bhavan should never become a stage for such events and actions. It is the office of the head of state. We raised the same criticism when Gurumurthy was invited to the governor's house,' he said, referring to RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy's presence at the Operation Sindoor event at the Raj Bhavan. Satheesan said the Raj Bhawan should have invited defence experts and former ambassadors to that event. BJP leader Kummanam Rajasekharan expressed surprise over the fresh row. 'I do not understand why Prasad or CPI leaders are reacting like this. The photograph of Bharat Mata should not be seen as a religious symbol.'

Kerala Minister boycotts event at Raj Bhavan over picture of Bharat Mata at venue
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A state government-organised programme at the Raj Bhavan here to mark World Environment Day on Thursday courted controversy after Agriculture Minister P Prasad boycotted the event after being informed that a picture of 'Bharat Mata' was kept at the venue. After the Raj Bhavan turned down the government's request to remove the picture, the official programme was shifted to the Durbar Hall at the government secretariat. The Minister later told the media that the venue was shifted to the Durbar Hall as the Raj Bhavan informed that floral tributes would be paid before the picture of Bharat Mata ahead of the programme's inauguration by Governor Rajendra Arlekar. According to Prasad, the picture kept at the Raj Bhavan was usually used by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in its functions. Prasad said the Raj Bhavan should not be turned into a venue for petty politics. He also pointed out that the display of such a picture during various events at the Raj Bhavan began after Arlekar assumed office as Governor. He said people of various religions and political affiliations attend a government programme, and it was not proper to behave in such a narrow-minded manner. The picture had come to the notice of officials of the Agriculture Department who had visited the Raj Bhavan to assess the preparations for the World Environment Day programme. After the Minister was informed of the matter, the government requested that the picture be removed. However, the Raj Bhavan turned down the government's request. Even though the Agriculture Department shifted its Environment Day celebrations to the Secretariat, the planting of saplings by the Governor, which was decided earlier, was held as per schedule at the Raj Bhavan.

What Shashi Tharoor said when asked about Rahul Gandhi's ‘PM Modi surrender' remark
Responding to a question in the US about Rahul Gandhi's 'PM Modi surrendered' remark, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Wednesday that India will continue to speak the language of force as long as Pakistan continues to speak the language of terrorism. Shashi Tharoor is currently leading a parliamentary delegation aimed at exposing Pakistan's terror links in the wake of India's Operation Sindoor. Rahul Gandhi attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government on Tuesday over allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "followed" Donald Trump after the US leader called him and that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not budge to the US in the 1971 war. When a journalist asked for his reaction to his own party leader's claim, Shashi Tharoor, after a brief smile at the question, replied, 'Well, all I can say is that we have enormous respect for the American Presidency and the American President. All we can say for ourselves is that we never particularly wanted to ask anyone to mediate. We don't have any difficulty in speaking the same language as the Pakistanis.' Tharoor said as long as Pakistan uses the language of terror, India would use the language of force. 'As long as they use the language of terrorism, we'll use the language of force that doesn't require a third party. If, on the other hand, they were to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism, we can talk to them,' he added. Tharoor pointed out that India didn't need to be told to stop during the recent conflict with the neighbours, as it would all stop the moment Pakistan stopped. 'If they (US) in turn then told the Pakistanis that you better stop and the Indians are willing to stop, that's a wonderful gesture on their part,' the Thiruvananthapuram MP said. Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal, Rahul Gandhi said, "Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. They run away out of fear if slight pressure is put on them. When Trump called Modiji- Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet came from the US. India Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had the habit of writing letters of surrender." Rahul Gandhi doubled down on his attack through a social media post, stating, "Trump's phone came, and PM Narendra Modi ji immediately surrendered. History is witness. This is the character of the BJP-RSS; they always budge. India had bifurcated Pakistan in 1971 despite the threat from the United States. The 'babbar sher' and 'shernis' of Congress fight the Superpowers, they do not bow'.
