The incident occurred in Ambergarh village, situated near the Bundelkhand Expressway. Local residents reported detecting a strong petroleum-like smell from their taps over several days. The water displayed unusual characteristics, including foam formation and an oily surface film. Several residents demonstrated that the liquid was combustible, substantiating the presence of petroleum compounds.
The villagers informed the district officials stating that the water supply, implemented under the Jal Jeevan Mission, became contaminated, raising serious health concerns.
They requested immediate government intervention for making alternative drinking water arrangements and conducting medical examinations for affected residents.
The district authorities initiated an investigation. District magistrate Rajesh Kumar Pandey said that various departments, including district supply, excise, Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam Rural, fire services, and groundwater specialists, were directed to conduct thorough inspections alongside police personnel to implement necessary measures.
A district official said that initial assessments suggest possible contamination of the groundwater aquifer, potentially from nearby fuel storage facilities or underground pipelines. Environmental experts collected samples from multiple hand pumps across the village for laboratory analysis.
The district health department has set up a temporary medical camp to monitor residents' health and address any immediate concerns related to exposure to contaminated water.

It reveals that access to clean drinking water under the Har Ghar Jal scheme significantly improved public health in rural Bundelkhand. Villagers experienced a marked decline in water-borne diseases, improved digestion and fewer stomach-related ailments. The availability of clean water also provided mental peace, resulting in increased work efficiency. Maternal mortality saw a notable reduction, with pregnant and lactating women reporting better health. Additionally, the burden of fetching water from distant sources—previously a cause of neck and back pain—eased. Contaminated water earlier led to bone weakening, which has now diminished. The JJM also impacted education. As all schools in the surveyed villages were fully integrated with the scheme, there was a notable rise in school enrolment, particularly among girls and a significant reduction in dropout rates, the study showed. CM seeks Centre's support for health infra upgrade, hydropower projects
1 2 3 Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Union jal shakti minister C R Patil and Union minister for health and family welfare JP Nadda in New Delhi on Thursday, seeking central support for strengthening health infrastructure in the state and demanding that the Centre or major beneficiary states such as Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan bear the financial costs of the Kishau hydel power project. Sukhu apprised Nadda of the state's requirements in implementing schemes such as Ayushman Bharat and the National Health Mission. He said there was a need for strengthening health facilities across the state. The CM requested the establishment of a dedicated cancer care centre in the state and the introduction of advanced medical technologies and modern equipment in govt hospitals to ensure better healthcare for the patients. Sukhu also urged for relaxation in eligibility criteria for central schemes and sought the early release of pending funds. The Union health minister assured the CM that the interests of Himachal Pradesh would be safeguarded and all necessary cooperation would be extended by the Centre to Himachal Pradesh. In his meeting with Union minister Patil, Sukhu discussed various key water resource projects concerning Himachal Pradesh, The Kishau hydel power project is a proposed gravity dam on the Tons river, a tributary of the Yamuna, on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The CM also raised critical issues regarding the Renuka Dam project. The CM called for due consideration of the local area development fund and the free power component. He said while hydro projects are essential for national development, their environmental and social impacts must also be addressed, and the affected states should be fairly compensated. Apart from this, the CM requested the early release of the pending amount under the Jal Jeevan Mission for the state. The Union minister assured the CM of all possible assistance and cooperation from the central govt.
