McCann's campaign sent a statement confirming McCann congratulated Aguirre Wednesday morning.

'Despite the outcome, I am proud that my campaign presented a clear statement in support of reducing the cost of living, getting the homeless off the streets and keeping our community safe,' McCann said in the statement. 'These are the principles that have guided me as Mayor of Chula Vista and will continue to be important objectives as I work on behalf of the city I love.'
He continued, 'I called to congratulate Mayor Aguirre this morning and offer my assistance with the critical challenges facing South County. We have worked closely together to address the ongoing Tijuana River sewage pollution and that environmental crisis will continue to be an important partnership for us. Additionally, I know we will work together on improving South County homeless programs and strengthening public safety.'
McCann also thanked the volunteers who supported his campaign.

Tuesday was the final day of voting in the special election to fill the vacancy left by former county supervisor and board chair Nora Vargas last November.
Aguirre took an early lead after 8 p.m. Tuesday. She issued a statement of her own, thanking her opponent for a 'hard-fought campaign.'
'I've spent my life, from organizing in forgotten neighborhoods to standing up as a small-town Mayor, fighting for working people and to fix the sewage crisis, and I'm not going to the County to back down — I'm going to double down and deliver,' Aguirre stated. 'Now, let's get to work.'
Senator Steve Padilla (D-San Diego) issued the following statement, congratulating Aguirre:
'San Diego County has elected a leader of conscience, tenacity, and vision. Paloma Aguirre is a tireless champion for working families, a dedicated public servant, and a dear friend. As Mayor of Imperial Beach, she has been a critical partner in our work to bring meaningful solutions to the ongoing cross border pollution crisis plaguing southern San Diego and I look forward to continuing that partnership as she steps into this new role. Congratulations Paloma!'
District 1 includes the cities of Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City, and some communities in the City of San Diego, such as Barrio Logan, East Village, Golden Hill and more. District 1 also includes the unincorporated areas of Bonita, East Otay Mesa, Lincoln Acres, Sunnyside and La Presa.
The election results are still considered unofficial until they are certified by the Registrar of Voters on or before July 16.

Trump floats plan to legalize undocumented immigrant farmworkers
President Donald Trump on Tuesday floated a plan to grant legal status to undocumented immigrant farmworkers, claiming that foreign-born migrants are 'naturally' better suited than 'inner city' Americans to menial agricultural jobs. Trump asserted that low-income American citizens are not as well suited to tough and low-paying farm work compared to immigrants, without offering any evidence. 'People that live in the inner city are not doing that work. They've tried, we've tried, everybody tried. They don't do it,' Trump said. 'These people do it naturally. They don't get a bad back.' Trump has spoken for months about creating some kind of legal status for undocumented immigrants who work in the agriculture and hospitality industries, both of which are highly dependent on them. He even briefly approved a pause in immigration enforcement actions aimed at California's vast agricultural heartland in the Central Valley, but it was quickly reversed. Big Ag and giant hospitality firms have lobbied the White House for a reprieve from his much-hyped mass deportation plan, which aims to oust up to 20 million undocumented immigrants from the U.S., regardless of how long they have lived here. The corporate titans, many of whom are also Republican donors, point out that America would have no way of feeding itself or running its restaurants and hotels without undocumented immigrants, a rare point of common ground with progressive advocates for immigrants. Any formal program to carve out a new legal status to groups of undocumented immigrants is likely to spark strong opposition from right-wing hard-liners, who decry such compromises as amnesty for law-breaking illegal immigrants. It's unclear if Trump has the stomach to push through a plan to ease his own immigration crackdown or if his MAGA base would back him if he does. _____

Messmer makes it official: He will seek re-election to Congress
Republican 8th District Congressman Mark Messmer made it official Tuesday: he will run for re-election next year, and he will do so with an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Messmer, a Jasper-based Republican, was elected to his first two-year term in 2024. He succeeded Larry Bucshon, who held the seat for 14 years. The 2026 House race in the 8th District has only begun to take shape, with Democratic Evansville City Council member Mary Allen set to announce her candidacy Wednesday. The 21-county 8th District stretches from southern Posey County up the Illinois-Indiana border to the top of Fountain County. Vanderburgh County is the largest county in the district by far. The district also includes Warrick, Gibson and Posey counties. Messmer, 62, released a written statement with his announcement Tuesday. "We must be bold and unapologetic in fighting for the principles of the American Founding," it says. "We have a leader in the White House who is working every day for the American people and not special interests, and we need members in Congress who will fight with President Trump to make sure America continues to be an exceptional nation filled with promise for the next generation."
