It's all shadowboxing right now. Auchincloss, 37, has said he is running for reelection. Still, when asked in the spring if he might challenge Markey,

Like Markey, Auchincloss is up for reelection in 2026. So he would have to give up his House seat to run a primary race against Markey. That didn't work out for his predecessor, Joe Kennedy III, who challenged Markey in 2020 and lost that election, along with his seat in Congress. But that was a different time, when Markey's wokeness, best illustrated by the endorsement he received from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, was a cherished prize.

Today, Democrats are trying to negotiate the new, furiously unwoke world of MAGA, in which a deportation center for undocumented immigrants is located in the Florida Everglades, the better to watch would-be escapees try to evade hungry alligators. In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey is kicking migrants out of hotel shelters and Auchincloss is expressing concerns about 'degradations to public order,' such as drug use, loitering, panhandling, encampments, vandalism, and shoplifting that could 'compound into lawlessness.'
In MAGA world, both Markey and Auchincloss would be considered soft on 'degradations to public order.'
Auchincloss didn't get into such nuance in his blog post. He just talked about how Democrats get less popular 'every time a customer has to ask the CVS clerk to unlock the shampoo.'
Markey, meanwhile, shows no signs of running from the progressive label.
Last month,

Message to fellow Democrats: As long as Markey is upright, he's running.
When it comes to progressive cred, the biggest endorsement that Markey could get would still come from AOC. Will he get another nod from her? Her press office did not respond to a question about that. If Representative Ayanna Pressley, a member of the House progressive 'squad' that includes AOC, got into the race, that could influence the calculation.
From the Markey camp comes word that he and Ocasio-Cortez continue to have a close relationship and are collaborating on a wide range of legislation. At the right time, there is reason to believe there would be 'a celebration of that partnership,' a Markey source said.
AOC's most recent endorsement went to Mamdani. In giving him her blessing, she
Across the country, including in Massachusetts, Democrats are adjusting to the MAGA era. Shortly after last November's election, Representative Seth Moulton, who represents Massachusetts' Sixth District and who is also mentioned by political insiders as a possible Markey challenger, worried out loud about the safety of his children if they must compete against transgender athletes.
Given the shifting political ground, is an endorsement from AOC as valuable to Markey in 2026 as it was in 2020? Or does he risk looking too woke?
To put it another way — is running against locked-up shampoo a winning strategy for Auchincloss?

House Passes One Big Beautiful Bill, Rep. Hakeem Jefferies Break Record For Longest Speech On Floor

Despite warnings from all corners of the political spectrum, President Donald Trump persuaded Republican Party lawmakers to side with him in moving the One Big Beautiful Bill ahead and getting it signed into law. The massive reconciliation bill faced some opposition from Republican members of Congress, and Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries pushed back via a record-breaking 'magic minute' speech that lasted 8 hours and 44 minutes. On Thursday (July 3) and on the eve of the proposed deadline imposed by President Trump, the One Big Beautiful Bill vote underwent some early resistance in the form of a small number of Republicans electing not to support the bill, which experts say will add massive debt, increase the reach of ICE, cut down on non-military spending, and changing the requirements to obtain Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) among other key points. During the Wednesday night House session to vote on the bill, four Republican lawmakers voted with the Democrats, which would have disrupted its passage. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Trump, and other GOP hardliners appealed to the dissenters and flipped two of them, leaving Reps. Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.) as the sole Republicans not to vote in favor. Rep. Jeffries gave a valiant effort to call out the bill's potential pitfalls in his magic minute speech, centering his message on the harm the bill could potentially do to the fabric of the nation. From the onset, President Trump has promised to be tough on immigration, lower taxes, and remove large portions of Americans from the safety net, who some Republicans feel were handed out under fraudulent pretenses. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are scheduled to visit Iowa this evening to meet with former Israeli hostage Edan Alexander and to begin a one-year countdown to America's 250th birthday. A new report from CNN states that a White House official shared with the network that Trump will shift his speech to celebrate the One Big Beautiful Bill's passage. Elon Musk (And Tesla) Became Much Less Popular In 2025

Elon Musk hasn't won any popularity contests in 2025, a stretch plagued by declining popularity among liberals as Musk cozied to President Donald Trump before a messy public divorce from Trump, which weighs heavily on Musk's most prominent venture, the electric and autonomous vehicle giant Tesla. Democrats, Republicans and independents agreed on one thing during 2025's first six months – they ... More all like the world's richest man a lot less. AFP via Getty Images Some 55% of Americans have an unfavorable view of Musk compared to 37% who hold a positive opinion, according to a dashboard from statistician Nate Silver's Silver Bulletin aggregating hundreds of polls on Musk. That's Musk's highest unfavorability since the tracker's inception in January 2024, and Musk's unfavorability shot up 10 percentage points over 2025's first half. Public perception of Musk predictably soured among Democrats given Musk's highly powerful role as the top lieutenant to Trump, to whom Musk donated more than $200 million to help elect, as just 16% of Democrats hold a favorable opinion of Musk, according to a June 6-8 poll by Morning Consult, compared to 82% with an unfavorable view of the billionaire. But Republicans' perception of Musk also soured while his tenure as Trump's chief cost-cutter ended in flames. Two-thirds (67%) of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Musk compared to 28% favorable, according to a June 6-9 survey from The Economist/YouGov poll, down from 83% and 9% favorable and unfavorable marks in the December iteration of the survey. Independents' views on Musk also deteriorated, as Musk went from an even 42% favorable/unfavorable split in December to a 27% to 59% favorable/unfavorable split in June, according to the Economist/YouGov survey. Musk and Tesla are impossible to untangle – Wall Street analysts often describe the trillion-dollar company as Musk's 'child' – and the car company is off to a slow start to 2025. In the annual Axios Harris Poll 100 ranking of the U.S.' 100 most visible brands, Tesla tumbled from 63rd to 95th over the last year, and just 32% of Americans view the company favorably, according to a June poll from Associated Press/NORC surveyAssociated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Tesla's financials show clear evidence of brand damage. The company delivered 13% less vehicles to customers over 2025's first half than it did during the same period last year, as profits shrank an estimated 29% year-over-year, according to FactSet's blended forecasts of first-quarter results and consensus analyst projections for second-quarter earnings due later this month. $280 billion. That's about how much market value Tesla lost during 2025's first half, more than six times the total valuation of Ford. Tesla stock tumbled 21% during the period. The S&P 500 gained 6% during the period, including reinvested dividends, as Tesla ranked among the 30 worst performers of the 500-stock index. Forbes Valuation Musk remains by far the wealthiest person on Earth with a $407 billion net worth as of June 30's market close, according to our latest calculations. His fortune declined by $14 billion from where it stood at the end of 2024, as the South Africa-born Musk enjoyed boosts to the value of his stakes in his privately held companies xAI, the generative artificial intelligence startup which absorbed the social media company formerly known as Twitter in March, and SpaceX, the aerospace and satellite internet giant. Crucial Quote 'We struggle to think of anything analogous in the history of the automotive industry, in which a brand has lost so much value so quickly,' J.P. Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman wrote in a note to clients this spring.
