Dubai, UAE: Aster Hospital Mankhool, ranked No. 4 on Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals in the UAE list for 2025, has launched its state-of-the-art Robotic Surgery Centre, marking a significant advancement in orthopedic care with the introduction of the ROSA® Robotic Knee Joint Replacement System. This cutting-edge robotic surgical assistant works alongside surgeons from pre-surgery planning through to the procedure itself, enhancing accuracy and reducing the risk of surgical errors in bone preparation and implant placement. As the first robotic surgery facility within Aster Hospitals in the UAE, this milestone underscores the hospital's commitment to providing world-class, technology-driven healthcare solutions.
The Robotic Surgery Centre was officially inaugurated by Olympic boxing legend and former Rajya Sabha Member, Mary Kom, who lauded the hospital's commitment to innovation and patient-centric advancements in healthcare.
Studies indicate that the global knee replacement market is projected to reach USD 17.35 billion by 20341, driven by an increasing aging population, osteoarthritis and rising patient demand for effective, long-lasting treatments. Robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery addresses the challenges of traditional procedures by offering greater precision, reducing recovery time, and improving implant longevity.
ROSA® assists surgeons by generating a 3D model of the patient's knee using preoperative CT scans (rather than X-rays), enabling a highly personalized and accurate surgical approach. By providing real-time data and intraoperative feedback, the system ensures optimal implant positioning, reduces surgical errors, and enhances joint function. The robotic assistance allows for customized treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique anatomy, significantly improving overall results.
Commenting on the launch, Dr. Malathi Arshanapalai, Group Chief Medical Officer and Group Chief Quality Officer, Aster DM Healthcare, said "At Aster, we are committed to continuously innovating and adopting advanced technologies that improve patient outcomes. The introduction of the robotic knee joint replacement system at Aster Hospital Mankhool is a testament to our vision of making high-quality, technology-driven healthcare accessible to our patients. With robotic-assisted surgery, we are bringing the future of orthopedic care to the region, ensuring more precision, faster recovery, and better overall experiences for patients undergoing knee replacement procedures."
The adoption of robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery at Aster Hospital Mankhool includes both knee and hip replacement surgeries, bringing multiple advantages over traditional procedures. Patients benefit from smaller incisions, minimal tissue disruption, and a reduced risk of complications, such as infections and nerve damage. The advanced technology enhances joint stability, ensuring proper alignment and lowering the risk of misalignment-related issues. Moreover, the precision of robotic assistance leads to improved implant longevity, potentially extending the lifespan of the prosthetic knee.
Dr. Ranjith Narayan, Specialist Orthopaedics, Aster Hospital Mankhool, added, "The introduction of the ROSA® Robotic Knee Joint Replacement System at Aster Hospital Mankhool is a game-changer in orthopedic care. This advanced robotic system enhances surgical precision by utilizing real-time data and 3D modeling, allowing for a highly personalized approach tailored to each patient's unique anatomy. By ensuring optimal implant positioning and minimizing surgical errors, the technology significantly improves joint function, reduces recovery time, and enhances overall patient outcomes. With robotic-assisted surgery, we are not only elevating the standard of knee replacement procedures but also providing our patients with a safer, more effective, and long-lasting treatment solution.'
With reduced postoperative pain and a faster rehabilitation process, patients can expect shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times. The minimally invasive nature of robotic-assisted surgery also reduces blood loss and promotes faster healing, contributing to an improved quality of life for individuals undergoing both knee and hip replacement surgeries. This technology is particularly beneficial for patients with severe arthritis or complex anatomical structures, offering them an advanced surgical solution for enhanced mobility and long-term joint health.
With this introduction, Aster Hospital Mankhool reaffirms its commitment to integrating innovation and excellence into patient care. This launch represents a transformative step forward in orthopedic treatment, ensuring that patients receive the most precise, effective, and minimally invasive surgical interventions available.

Dubai Mall Unveils Ambitious Expansion Amidst Soaring Visitor Numbers
Dubai Mall is set to undergo a significant expansion, with Emaar Properties announcing a substantial investment of AED 1.5 billion to enhance the mall's offerings. The development will introduce 240 new luxury retail stores and food and beverage outlets, further solidifying the mall's position as a premier global shopping destination. In 2023, Dubai Mall achieved a remarkable milestone by welcoming 105 million visitors, marking a 19% increase from the previous year. This surge in footfall underscores the mall's growing appeal and the emirate's broader strategy to boost tourism and retail sectors. The expansion aims to accommodate this increasing demand and enhance the overall visitor experience. Spanning over 1.2 million square meters, Dubai Mall currently houses more than 1,200 retail outlets, including flagship stores like Galeries Lafayette and Bloomingdale's. The mall also offers over 200 international dining options and a range of entertainment attractions, such as the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, an Olympic-sized ice rink, a 26-screen cinema, and the Zabeel Sports District. The upcoming expansion will build upon these offerings, introducing new luxury brands and dining experiences to cater to diverse visitor preferences. ADVERTISEMENT Emaar Properties has already commenced on-site preparations for the expansion, although a specific completion date has not been disclosed. The project reflects Dubai's ambitious vision to remain at the forefront of global innovation and culture, aiming to further enhance the city's status as a top international destination. The expansion also aligns with broader trends in the United Arab Emirates' retail sector. Despite global shifts towards online shopping, the UAE has witnessed a 14% increase in retail spending, driven by sectors such as fashion, general retail, and leisure and entertainment. This growth highlights the continued relevance and appeal of brick-and-mortar retail experiences in the region. In addition to the Dubai Mall expansion, other major retail developments are underway in the city. For instance, Majid Al Futtaim has announced a $1.36 billion investment to expand the Mall of the Emirates, another prominent shopping destination in Dubai. These initiatives underscore the city's commitment to enhancing its retail infrastructure and offering unparalleled shopping experiences to residents and tourists alike.

Sterling holds its own against stronger dollar, trade optimism lends supports
Sterling ticked higher against the dollar on Thursday, one of the few major currencies to hold its own against the greenback which regained ground after weak U.S. data dragged it lower on Wednesday. The pound was up 0.14% at $1.3574, while against the euro it was up 0.1% at 84.16 pence. Sterling remains a touch away from a more than three-year high hit on May 26, underpinned by ongoing dollar weakness with the pound up over 8% this year. Also helping is the fact the UK is the only country to have struck a trade deal with the U.S and was spared from higher U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs, though analysts question how beneficial those factors are. "The trade deal does matter," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG Group. "You might argue it's not a proper trade deal and that it doesn't solve all the problems, but at least it's a sign that there's a more compelling reason to hold the pound rather than be worrying about the euro," Beauchamp added. The Bank of England (BoE) will meet on June 19 to deliver its next policy decision with market bets firmly on the monetary policy committee (MPC) keeping rates steady. There had been expectations of a further 25 bps cut from the BoE at its June meeting but bets were slashed following weak economic data and a hotter-than-expected inflation read last month. On Tuesday, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said he was sticking with a "gradual and careful" approach to cutting interest rates as global trade policy turmoil increasingly clouds the outlook. Reassurance came on Wednesday with a survey showing Britain's services sector returned to tepid growth last month. (Reporting by Lucy Raitano and Johann M Cherian, Editing by Ed Osmond)

Over 200 Filipino health workers to depart for Japan
A total of 218 Filipino health workers will soon leave for Japan, following a send-off ceremony organized by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). This 17th batch includes 19 nurses and 199 careworkers, scheduled to depart on June 10 and 11, after completing the required training under the Philippines-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (PJEPA). In his speech, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s full support for Filipino workers going abroad and lauded their dedication, likening them to Olympic gold medalists. 'It's been proven time and again. It's you guys who are number one. You are the Olympic gold medalists every single day. Nobody can do what you can do.' PJEPA, the Philippines' first bilateral free trade agreement signed in 2006 and implemented in 2009, also covers the deployment of qualified Filipino health professionals to Japan, sending a total of 655 nurses and 3,760 careworkers since it began. Japanese officials also expressed their strong support, with Japan Foundation Manila Director Ben Suzuki emphasizing the sacrifices made by Filipino workers and their contribution to Japan. 'For Filipino people, working abroad means a sacrifice rooted in love for their family and dignity of life, more than earning enough income. The dedication and cultural values that can help enrich today's Japanese society,' Suzuki said.
