US forces kill top ISIS leader Dhiya Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, two sons in Syria raid
The raid resulted "in the death of senior ISIS leader, Dhiya Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, and his two adult ISIS-affiliated sons," CENTCOM said in a statement, using an acronym for the jihadist group.
"These ISIS individuals posed a threat to US and Coalition forces, as well as the new Syrian government," it said, adding that three women and three children were at the location that was raided and were unharmed in the operation.
The Islamic State group rose out of the chaos of the Syrian civil war to seize swaths of territory there and in neighboring Iraq over a decade ago.
It has since suffered major defeats in both countries, but the United States still periodically targets the jihadist group's remnants with raids or strikes to prevent it from resurging.

Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, head of the Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections, informed the state news agency SANA that polls will be held between September 15 and 20. They will be the first held by the country's new leaders following the fall of former President Bashar Assad in a swift rebel attack in December. Another election committee member, Hassan al-Daghim, stated in a recent interview with the Erem News website that an electoral college will be established in every Syrian province to cast votes for the elected seats. In March, al-Sharaa signed a temporary constitution that called for the creation of a People's Committee to act as a makeshift parliament until the adoption of a permanent constitution and general elections are held, a process that may take years. The recent announcement of upcoming polls coincides with a growing rift in the nation's opinion of the new Damascus government following sectarian violence in the southern province of Sweida earlier this month. The fighting killed hundreds of people and threatened to unravel Syria's fragile postwar transition. The violent clashes, which broke out two weeks ago, were sparked by tit-for-tat kidnappings between armed Bedouin clans and fighters from the Druze religious minority. Syrian government forces intervened, ostensibly to end the fighting, but effectively sided with the clans. Some government fighters reportedly executed Druze civilians and burned and looted houses. Israel intervened, launching airstrikes on government forces and on the Defense Ministry headquarters. Israel said it was acting to defend the Druze minority.

US, EU seal trade framework after Trump's tariff talks with top European leader

The minister said the talks are going well with the US and India will do a good bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by October-November. American trade negotiators are slated to visit India in August for the next round of negotiations for the proposed BTA, the first tranche of which is aimed to be concluded by October. The fifth round of talks concluded in Washington last week. The countries aim to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion. The two sides were working to finalise an interim trade deal before August 1. "Our discussions with the United States are progressing very well. I am fully confident that by the October-November 2025 timeline, we will secure a good agreement," Goyal said. This was his first outreach programme with industry after the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed on July 24. Exporters from gems and jewellery and marine sectors, among others, participated in the event. "It is the most comprehensive free trade agreement India has ever entered with 30 chapters, including environment, gender, anti-corruption," Goyal said about CETA. "It has so many positives and new things that today the world wants to do business with India." He said India is in the process of finalising trade agreements with developed countries with whom it doesn't compete but complement. Whether it is New Zealand, Oman, the US, or the EU, India's agreements will be made with a "well-thought-out strategy" as the country negotiates from a position of strength and confidence, the minister said. He alleged that the previous UPA government had left Indian trade, farmers and fishermen to the mercy of a non-market economy by its move to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a free trade agreement between Asean countries and China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
