Valmikis take out protest march against fake caste certificates

The Hindu3 days ago
Several hundreds from the Maharshi Valmiki community took to the streets in Yadgir on Wednesday and demanded legal action against fake caste certificates to those from the non-Valmiki communities.
They took out a protest march on the main streets urging the State government to fulfil their long-pending demands, primarily to prevent fake caste certificates in the name of the Valmiki community to non-Valmiki communities.
Community leaders said that the revenue authorities are issuing fake caste certificates to non-Valmiki communities. The State government should take legal action against the authorities as per the direction given by the High Court of Karnataka for issuing such certificates.
The protesters demanded action on scholarships to be distributed immediately to students of the Valmiki community. They said that a tribal university should be established to enable tribal students to study and carry out research.
They said that many from the community are subjected to atrocities and other crimes. The government should protect such people. Legal action should be taken against officers for diverting funds meant for Scheduled Tribes to other activities.
They said that Madhugiri MLA K.N. Rajanna, who belongs to the Valmiki community, should be included in the Cabinet, as he was sacked recently for no specific reason.
Peethadhipathi of Valmiki Gurupeetha, Rajanahalli in Davangere, Prasannanand Swami, Mareppa Naik Mogdampur, Krishnappagouda Aldal, Hanumanth Naik, Siddalingappa Naik, Bheemu Naik and others were present.

Vladimir Putin demanded this for Ukraine peace; Zelenskyy rejected it

At the Alaska summit with Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded full control of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions as a condition for ending the three-year war, signaling he would not back down from what he called his core demands to 'resolve the root causes' of the conflict, the Financial Times reported. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In return, he agreed for halting the frontlines in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, where his troops control significant territory, and refrain from launching further offensives to seize additional land, the report said citing three people familiar with the talks. Trump later communicated the message to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who is set to visit the States on Monday. Zelenskyy, however, rejected the demand, Reuters reported citing source. Another diplomatic source said the US proposed offering Ukraine a 'non-Nato Article 5' security guarantee, a pledge of collective defense-style support without granting Nato membership, which was reportedly discussed and tentatively agreed with Putin. What now? While Trump has called for a peace agreement instead of a ceasefire deal, Zelenskyy called for strengthening sanctions on Russia if there was no trilateral meet. He added that all issues concerning Ukraine "must be discussed with Ukraine's participation". "In my conversation with President Trump, I said that sanctions should be strengthened if there is no trilateral meeting or if Russia tries to evade an honest end to the war. Sanctions are an effective tool. Security must be guaranteed reliably and in the long term, with the involvement of both Europe and the US. All issues important to Ukraine must be discussed with Ukraine's participation, and no issue, particularly territorial ones, can be decided without Ukraine," he said. They also backed the proposed three-way summit between Zelensky, Putin and Trump as the Alaska meet failed to deliver a ceasefire.

Vellappally sees ‘Christian dominance' in Kottayam

Nearly a month after sparking outrage by accusing the Muslim community of attempting to expand its influence in Kerala, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan has once again courted controversy by claiming that Kottayam district is under Christian dominance. Addressing a meeting of the Meenachil-Kaduthuruthy SNDP Taluk Unions on Saturday, Mr. Natesan alleged that social justice was being denied to the Ezhava community and that educational opportunities were not being distributed fairly. Highlighting political underrepresentation, he pointed out that in Kottayam district, there was only one Ezhava MLA, while 'all the others are those walking the path of the cross.' 'Not a communalist' Defending himself against accusations of communalism, he said, 'I am not a communalist. I am only speaking for my community. When I raise these issues, it is branded as communalism. Even if you burn me alive, I will not retract my words. Where else can I express the sorrows of my community if not from this chair?,' asked Mr. Natesan He further said there was not a single school or college under the SNDP Yogam in Pala. While institutions run by religious groups thrive, those promoting secularism remain downtrodden, he said. Mr. Natesan also accused the media of distorting his earlier speech in Malappuram and claimed that criticism against him subsided only after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued a statement. On IUML and secularism On the occasion, he also questioned the Indian Union Muslim League's (IUML) commitment to secularism. 'Does the IUML have any non-Muslim MLAs?' he asked, further accusing the IUML of spreading the 'poison of communalism' and adding that even the party's name reflected its sectarian nature. 'The League must be told these factors directly. That is my responsibility,' he said. At the State-level inauguration of branch leadership meetings of various SNDP Yogam unions last month, Mr. Natesan had similarly courted controversy when he warned that the Muslim community would soon become the majority in Kerala and criticised the 'undue interventions by the community in the State's administrative affairs.'

70-year-old statue of Hanuman stolen from Fiji temple, idol was cemented to the floor

The 35 cm idol was cemented to the floor but vanished overnight. Fijivillage reported that police said the temple's 68-year-old assistant treasurer discovered the theft Wednesday morning and lodged a report. Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha President, Dhirendra Nand, described the theft as 'deeply hurtful' and confirmed the organisation will conduct its own internal investigation alongside police inquiries. He told the news outlet that CCTV cameras are installed in the temple and urged authorities to examine the footage. 'We have confidence in the law and order of this country and in the Police Force. We hope the truth will come before the public very soon,' Nand said and urged devotees to not be disheartened as the incident coincided with the conclusion of Shree Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. The incident comes as the Indo-Fijian community is under increased attack in the island country. Last month, 100-year-old idols at Samabula Shiv Temple were destroyed. 28-year-old man, Sameula Tawake was charged with one count of alleged sacrilege and one count of throwing an object. Fiji's former attorney general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum voiced concern over the environment for the Indo-Fijian community in the country. He said the desecration was the act of an individual "possibly radicalised to execute religious hatred with purpose." "Inconsistent concern and commitment by the Prime Minister about hate speech and discrimination gives rise to and encourages radical ethno- nationalists who engage the political game of 'us' and 'them'," Sayed-Khaiyum wrote. "If not reined in and spoken against in the harshest of terms by our leaders and those in positions of authority, then such acts will only give more oxygen to others who are already vulnerable to hate and discrimination." The desecration of non-Christian places of worship started when "overt and blatant hate was espoused against Indo-Fijians in 1987, to justify the overthrow of the (Timoci) Bavadra government," he wrote. Sayed-Khaiyum said that the rise in attacks against Indo-Fijians is being "increasingly accepted as the norm under the current leadership."
