British legend new frontrunner to play Voldemort after Harry Potter cast updates
A new name has leapt to the front of the race to predict who will play Voldemort in the Harry Potter adaptation for TV.
After HBO this week anointed three young actors as Harry, Hermione and Ron for a new generation, speculation has ramped up for who will play the trio's arch nemesis.
Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have been cast in the lead roles to follow in the footsteps of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, after over 30,000 young hopefuls threw their name into the sorting hat at the casting director's office.
The production had already shared a swathe of casting announcements, with John Lithgow set to play headmaster Albus Dumbledore, I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu taking on Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
The Potterheads are now waiting for the rest of the cast to be announced, with our new Voldemort still missing from the roster.
The leading contender for the spot is said to be British actor Tom Hiddleston. No stranger to playing a baddie, Hiddleston is probably best known as Marvel's impish Loki.
The 44-year-old is currently leading early predictions, according to Online Betting Guide, who have put him at 1/1 odds.
He's followed by Peaky Blinders Cillian Murphy at 6/4, who previously had something of an edge after the original Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes gave Murphy his blessing.
Fiennes was asked to address weeks of speculation Murphy would take over the role during an interview on Watch What Happens Live. Who do you think would be the best Voldemort?
He said: 'Cillian is a fantastic actor. That's a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian. Yeah.'
Following Hiddleston and Murphy in the bookies' reckoning is another Marvel star, with Paul Bettany at 3/1. Then in fourth is yet another Marvel alum – maybe willingness to be in one franchise means you're more likely to do it again – with Benedict Cumberbatch at 6/1.
This comes after HBO finally shed light on how much the TV adaptation of JK Rowling's smash books is going to cost, after astronomical figures had been bandied about.
Senior TV Reporter Rebecca Cook shares her take…
Tom Hiddleston's tenure as Loki in the Marvel franchise is riddled (get it) with moments proving he has a strong Voldemort performance in him. Think back to when he went full panto villain at Comic-Con in 2013, emerging from the dark with the audience eating out of the palm of his hand.
He's certainly capable of playing a charismatic villain – but there's the risk his charm may soften Voldemort's edges. After all, who didn't end up secretly loving Loki, even before we were meant to?
We want someone who's truly terrifying to play Voldemort. Hairs upright on the back of your neck type of thing.
Perhaps an actor like Idris Elba would be a better fit, admittedly not currently in the conversation, but with a commanding presence and The Wire's Stringer Bell as proof he knows how to play a complicated villain.
The budget reported so far would make the HBO show the most expensive ever to be made, trouncing Prime Video's $465 million (£399 million) price tag for Rings of Power. More Trending
The Express reported each episode would cost £75 million to make, boosting the UK economy by billions.
However, a source close to the production has now confirmed to Metro that the reported figure is inaccurate.
Instead, the production costs will be on a par with Game of Thrones' budget. The eighth season of the show was its most expensive, costing roughly $15 million (almost £12 million at the time) per episode.

Sir Terry Wogan's wife Lady Helen leaves huge sum in her will after sad death
Sir Terry Wogan's wife Lady Helen has left a huge sum in her estate, which will be shared between her three children and five grandchildren Sir Terry Wogan's wife Lady Helen left millions of pounds in her estate. Terry was a British icon and his loyal wife of 51 years stood by his side throughout his entire life. Terry died in 2016 at the age of 77 whilst Lady Helen passed away last year, leaving a huge sum in her will. She died last year at the age of 88, leaving behind three children, who will now inherit her fortune. In a statement at the time of her death, their son wrote at the time: "Lady Helen Wogan - 1936-2024. Our beautiful Mum left us last night after a fantastic life. From a young Irish rose to Lady Wogan , she was the epitome of style and grace. "A Mother, Grandmother and Wife, with love and kindness at her core. A strength and a belief that saw her through many of life's trials. A sense of humour and a turn of phrase that would have you in fits of laughter. "A proper lady in every sense of the word. Her and Dad are hopefully sharing a vodka martini and hoping we don't make too much of fuss. We love you Mum, now and forever." Lady Helen left a huge £4,948,334 in her will, with the total being reduced by £31,000 to £4,917,989 following the removal of costs and fees, documents signed off by the High Court reveal. It has also been reported by The Sun that Lady Helen left two tax free gifts to two of her children - £850,000 to her son Alan Wogan, who is an executor, and also £750,000 to their daughter Katherine. Each of Terry and Helen's grandchildren have also been given a £100,000 trust, which they can access when they turn 25. The rest of their possessions and money will be split between their three living children - Mark, Alan and Katherine. Sir Terry Wogan died of cancer back in January 2016. A family statement, issued by the BBC, said at the time: "Sir Terry Wogan died today after a short but brave battle with cancer. He passed away surrounded by his family. While we understand he will be missed by many, the family ask that their privacy is respected at this time." Terry passed away just a few months after his final show on Radio 2, where he announced he had prostate cancer. He pulled out of Children In Need later that month due to health reasons.

Warner Bros Discovery shareholders reject 2024 executive pay
June 3 (Reuters) - A majority of Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O), opens new tab shareholders voted against the 2024 pay packages of CEO David Zaslav and other top executives at the media conglomerate's annual stockholder meeting, a Tuesday regulatory filing showed. The board of directors had recommended shareholders to vote in favor of the 2024 executive compensation; however, more than 59% of them rejected the proposal on a non-binding basis. For 2024, Zaslav's total compensation rose 4% from the prior year to $51.9 million. Warner Bros Discovery has been struggling to stem declines in its cable TV business amid widespread cord-cutting, focusing instead on its faster-growing streaming and studios divisions. Last month, it missed first-quarter revenue estimates and posted a larger-than-expected loss. The company is also moving towards a potential breakup, CNBC reported last month. WBD had laid the groundwork for a possible sale or spinoff of its declining cable TV assets last December by announcing a separation from its streaming and studio operations. Powered by a strong content slate, including the third season of HBO's "The White Lotus" and the medical drama series "The Pitt", WBD added 5.3 million streaming subscribers in the January-March quarter, beating market expectations, but still far off from streaming industry leader Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab. The company last month also walked back on the branding of its streaming service, Max, bringing back the HBO name it dropped two years ago.

Emma Watson's dad on why new Harry Potter child stars' parents should be 'scared
Emma Watson's father, Chris, has shared stark words about the pressures of childhood fame as HBO announces the leads of the Harry Potter TV remake. The reboot of the franchise (this time in TV format) is on everyone's lips after a slew of casting announcements culminated in the literary Golden Trio. Formerly played by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma over the course of eight movies in the 2000s, the fresh cast will star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. The three child actors – who beat out 30,000 other children for the coveted spots – have been flung into a whole new level of stardom last experienced by Emma, Rupert and Daniel, who are all now in their 30s. In an era of social media, and with more eyes than ever on the franchise and how this controversial remake will fare, Chris reflected on how tough it was to handle the pressure during Emma's rise to fame. He told Times Radio: 'As a parent, you have to be scared. This can be a very difficult thing for a parent and child to handle, or not. While there are many upsides, nothing is perfect. 'If [parents of the new Harry Potter cast] want to talk to someone who's been through this extraordinary experience, I would be more than happy to talk to them.'Emma Watson's father, Chris Watson, knew his daughter was a star when she came on stage in a school musical. — Times Radio (@TimesRadio) May 30, 2025 'You have to recognise there are going to be a whole load of downsides, some of them you couldn't have imagined. He added that 'normal life continued as far as possible' for a way to protect her and 'it certainly helped that I don't actually watch movies. It's not a big thing in the house, and so it was easier for us to keep her feet on the ground.' Before concluding: 'If [parents of the new Harry Potter cast] want to talk to someone who's been through this extraordinary experience, I would be more than happy to talk to them.' It's no secret that becoming the most recognised young actors in the world took its toll on the original three actors with the Little Women star previously speaking about her desire to exit the franchise halfway through. During one interview, she recalled the experience as 'very foggy'. Meanwhile, Daniel has been candid about his journey with sobriety after he started drinking during the filming of the movies. The actors who have signed up for the HBO series – including Nick Frost as Hagrid, John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape – are already under immense scrutiny. I'm truly concerned about what will happen to the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione, plucked from childhood and obscurity and flung into stardom. Not only will this trio of unknown actors star in what will surely become one of the most heavily scrutinised TV shows this decade, but all under the creative jurisdiction of someone who has, in my view, opposed the rights of a marginalised community. We have already seen the dangers this level of fame can create, even before the author of the series descended into Twitter troll status There are all the elements for disaster waiting to happen – and while, for me, schadenfreude is tempting given Rowling's behaviour – I'm worried that these innocent children will be the collateral damage. Not least because the author behind Harry Potter, JK Rowling, has been slammed by many for her critical views of the transgender community, prompting calls to boycott the show. In an interview with The Times, Lithgow said: 'I thought, why is this a factor at all? I wonder how JK Rowling has absorbed it. I suppose at a certain point I'll meet her and I'm curious to talk to her.' Meanwhile, Nick is remaining optimistic as he spoke about his excitement to step into the role in a recent chat. 'I've gone in to do head sculpts and have your hand stand and stuff, and they say, 'Oh, have a look at this.' And you're like, 'Wow. That's the coolest thing.' 'I love films. I've loved cinema my whole life, so to be part of that universe now and that they're showing me, like, a dancing mushroom, it's like, 'That is so cool!' he said. More Trending After the announcement of Harry, Ron and Hermione's casting, Rowling tweeted: 'All three are wonderful. I couldn't be happier.' In a statement, executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod said: 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. 'We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' Got a story?
