FAM urges AFC and AFF action over Jalur Gemilang flag insult at U-23 match
FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub said he views the incident seriously and deeply regrets it occurring in a match that saw the national squad tied 0-0 with the hosts.
'We don't condone this kind of act, whether at the national or international level. We are dealing with the AFC and AFF (for the next course of action),' he said after the launch of the 2025 National Women's League (LWN) here today.
Recently, a screenshot of the Jalur Gemilang being 'crossed out (with an 'X' drawn on it)' and held upside down by Indonesian fans during the match went viral on social media.
The goalless draw saw Malaysia failing to advance to the semi-finals of the Asean Under-23 Championship after finishing the group stage in third place with four points, behind group winners Indonesia (seven points) and the Philippines (six points). Brunei finished bottom of the group with no points.
Malaysia began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to the Philippines before bouncing back to thrash Brunei 7-1. They, however, failed to beat Indonesia, who only needed a draw to advance to the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Mohd Joehari will also discuss with FAM lawyers to take further action against an Indonesian football observer whose slur claimed that Malaysia have been suspended by the International Football Federation (Fifa) until 2027.
The observer, through a podcast, accused FAM of fielding players whose lineage is unclear to qualify for playing with Harimau Malaya.
The Malaysian squad, strengthened by the presence of seven new heritage players, including Facundo Garces, Joao Figueiredo, Imanol Machuca and Rodrigo Holgado, created a big impact as they thrashed Vietnam 4-0 in their second Group F match in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil last month.
Harimau Malaya currently lead Group F with six points, followed by Vietnam and Laos (both with three points each) and Nepal, with no points. — Bernama

AI-generated? Govt mulling labels to flag fake content online, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — The government is mulling mandatory labelling for content generated or modified using artificial intelligence (AI) as part of efforts to curb the spread of misinformation on social media, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the proposed labels, such as 'AI-Generated' or 'AI-Enhanced', would help users identify content created or altered with AI technology. 'We are looking into implementing this through Act 866, or the Online Safety Act (ONSA), and we expect that once regulations are finalised by the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission), ONSA will come into force by the end of this year,' he said during the Minister's Question Time. Fahmi said this in reply to the supplementary question by Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (PN-Langkawi), who raised concerns about the growing presence of deepfakes on social media platforms. Addressing the issue of deepfakes that misuse the likeness or voice of public figures, Fahmi emphasised that regulating generative technologies like AI is now a topic of active discussion both nationally and internationally. 'Social media platforms have a responsibility; they must not allow deepfake content to spread unchecked,' he added. In response to Suhaimi's primary question regarding MCMC's investigative procedures for social media-related complaints, Fahmi explained that investigations are conducted under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), beginning with a first information report (FIR) and potentially leading to referral to the deputy public prosecutor. 'For cases under investigation, a notice under Section 255 of Act 588 may be issued to the individual concerned…if there is initial evidence linking the person to the alleged offence, their communication devices can be seized by either MCMC or the police,' he said. Man arrested after dramatic hour-long car chase across Kota Samarahan and Kuching
KOTA SAMARAHAN, July 29 — Police arrested a 31-year-old man after a nearly hour-long car chase that began in Kota Samarahan and ended at Lorong 6, Stampin Tengah in Kuching early this morning. Kota Samarahan police chief Supt Damataries Lautin said the incident began at around 2.50am, when a team from Kota Samarahan police station together with a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit was conducting a crime prevention patrol behind a hotel near Aiman Mall. 'Our officers spotted a suspicious-looking hatchback and when the team attempted to carry out a check, the driver sped off and refused to cooperate despite being ordered to stop via loudspeaker,' he said in a statement. Damataries said the suspect's vehicle was later seen speeding towards Kampung Sindang before doubling back to the Aiman Mall area and then heading towards the administrative zone of the Kuching district police headquarters. In his attempt to escape, the suspect's vehicle collided with a police pickup truck, damaging its rear door. A screengrab from the viral video shows the dramatic chase. Police then sought assistance from the Kuching District MPV unit, City Patrol Unit, and Sentral 10 to block the suspect's route. 'The suspect eventually stopped his vehicle at Lorong 6, Stampin Tengah and attempted to flee into nearby bushes before being successfully apprehended,' Damataries said. A body search of the suspect revealed no prohibited items and checks on the vehicle's registration number confirmed it had not been reported stolen. Police also seized the car driven by the suspect as evidence. Damataries revealed the man has several prior criminal records related to housebreaking and drug offences in Simunjan. 'The suspect was taken to Kota Samarahan police station for further investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties. 'During the arrest, the suspect acted aggressively, prompting our officers to use minimal force. No injuries were reported,' he added. Police have also advised the public not to speculate on the case and to allow the authorities to conduct their investigation fairly and transparently.
