Football: Struggling Marinos appoint Oshima as new manager

The Mainichi24-06-2025
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Yokohama F Marinos on Tuesday named Hideo Oshima as the new manager of the struggling J-League first-division club.
The 45-year-old was appointed as interim boss following the sacking of previous manager Patrick Kisnorbo last week after just two months in charge.
Marinos, historically one of Japan's most successful clubs, currently languish at the bottom of the 20-team J1 table with just three wins from 20 games.
"To get the team through this difficult situation, I must do it myself," Oshima said in a statement from the club. "I hope we can fight as one and finish the season happily."
Oshima's playing career included stints with several clubs including Marinos and second-division Montedio Yamagata. He joined the Marinos coaching staff after hanging up his boots.

Football: Elias bags winner as Verdy beat Kyoto to go top of J1

KAMEOKA, Kyodo (Kyodo) -- Rafael Elias netted the winner as Kyoto Sanga edged past Tokyo Verdy 1-0 at home on Saturday to move top of the J-League first division, with the top six teams separated by just two points. The win sees Kyoto move up to 48 points, level with previous leaders Kashima Antlers who drew 1-1 at home against Avispa Fukuoka, but Sanga sit top of the J1 standings on total goals scored as both sides have the same goal difference. Kashiwa Reysol, who play on Sunday, sit third a point behind Kyoto and Kashima. A lively Kyoto had a chance in the 19th minute when a deep corner found Hidehiro Sugai totally unmarked, only for the defender's powerful effort to go straight at Verdy keeper Matheus. At the other end, Kyoto's Gakuji Ota produced a one-handed save on the stroke of halftime to deny Yuan Matsuhashi's diving header and the keeper also reacted well to deny Yuya Fukuda's low curling shot in the 54th minute before Elias took his chance 12 minutes later. The 26-year-old Brazilian produced a perfect first touch after Taichi Hara's low cross from the left took a bounce and landed at his feet, allowing him to roll the ball past Matheus for his 10th goal of the campaign. "I'm really happy with the win after scoring virtually the only big chance I had in the match," he said. "I knew it was going to be a tough game, and it was even more difficult to carry out our plan after rain early on made the pitch heavy." Kyoto extended their unbeaten run to seven, with their last defeat coming away to Verdy on May 25, while Verdy remain 14th on 31 points, seven points above the relegation zone. Elsewhere, Machida Zelvia eased past Cerezo Osaka 3-0 for their seventh straight win, moving up to fourth on 46 points. Sanfrecce Hiroshima held off Gamba Osaka 1-0 and are fifth on goal difference, with two-time reigning champions Vissel Kobe also level on points but dropping to sixth after a shock, late 1-0 defeat against Yokohama FC. Urawa Reds are seventh on 44 points after fending off Nagoya Grampus 2-1. Kawasaki Frontale drew 1-1 away to bottom side Albirex Niigata, FC Tokyo were held 2-2 at Shonan Bellmare and Yokohama F Marinos won 3-1 at Shimizu S-Pulse, moving a point off safety.

2 Japanese soccer players admit to betting corruption in Australia

soccer Two Japanese soccer players, including an Australian A-League player, admitted at a Melbourne court hearing Wednesday to match-fixing and betting corruption charges. Riku Danzaki, 25, a former midfielder for Melbourne-based A-League club Western United, pleaded guilty to seven charges relating to a scheme to deliberately receive yellow cards during matches between April and May to manipulate betting outcomes, during the hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court. His co-accused Yuta Hirayama, a 27-year-old student and friend of Danzaki who played for an amateur club in Melbourne, also pleaded guilty to seven betting-related charges for using information about Danzaki's plans to bet on the matches. Together the pair placed bets on Danzaki receiving yellow cards during three A-League games, earning winnings of almost AU$16,000 ($10,480), court documents showed. Danzaki's defense lawyer Lewis Winter told the court his client was "profoundly ashamed" and "genuinely remorseful" for his actions. The court's magistrate indicated he would not be considering jail time for the player, and a fine was suggested as the most appropriate penalty by Winter. The two men were arrested on May 30 and later released on bail. They are expected to be sentenced on Aug 22 when the matter returns to court. Danzaki joined Western United in Australian soccer's top division in 2023 after playing for Brisbane Roar in the league. He made his professional debut in 2019 for Consadole Sapporo, playing in the first division, before stints with clubs including J2 outfit JEF United Chiba and Scottish side Motherwell. Hirayama played last season with the Bayside Argonauts after several years playing for clubs in Queensland, according to the Herald Sun newspaper. © KYODO
