Kerala Congress (M) to demand more seats from LDF in local body polls

The Hindu27-06-2025
The Kerala Congress (M) State secretariat, which met here on Friday, has decided to press for a larger share of seats from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the upcoming local body elections.
Asserting its political claim, the meeting entrusted district unit presidents with the task of initiating seat-sharing discussions with LDF leadership at the district level. The party also reviewed its grassroots election preparations and decided to intensify ward-level campaigns. To bolster these efforts, special responsibilities will be assigned to both district and State-level leaders. Fundraising strategies to support campaign activities were also evaluated during the session.
Addressing the meeting, party chairman Jose K. Mani remarked that the United Democratic Front's (UDF) recent calls for front expansion reflect a deeper crisis of confidence. He dismissed the notion that the outcome of the Nilambur by-election could be seen as a political mandate for the UDF.
On Nilambur verdict
'Nilambur has long been a UDF stronghold. This verdict does not in any way diminish the LDF's prospects for continued governance,' he said. 'We will take the outcome in stride and work to further improve the performance of both the government and the front.'
To address the pressing concerns of farmers and high-range communities, the party will constitute an expert committee for a comprehensive study. A policy manifesto based on its findings will be presented to the LDF.
Mr. Mani also pointed out that the biggest legislative obstacle in resolving human-wildlife conflict is the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, enacted during Congress rule at the Centre. He urged the State government to fast-track legal reforms, within constitutional limits, to safeguard the lives and property of people in affected regions.
He further emphasised the need for timely resolution of land deed disputes in high-range areas, removal of restrictions preventing farmers from felling trees on their own land and other grassroots grievances through coordinated inter-departmental action. The party also called for urgent steps for a hike in welfare pensions for vulnerable sections and the implementation of a support price of ₹250 per kg for natural rubber.
The meeting, chaired by Jose K. Mani, was attended by Minister Roshi Augustine, Vice Chairmen N. Jayaraj and Thomas Chazhikadan, and other senior leaders.

UDF suffers a blow in Vaikom as Kerala Congress councillor joins CPI(M)

With just a few months to go for the local body elections in Kerala, the United Democratic Front (UDF) has suffered a major setback in Kottayam with a Kerala Congress councillor in the Vaikom municipality switching allegiance to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. This move has left both the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) with an equal number of members in the municipal council. Sindhu Sajeevan, who represents Ward 13 and serves as chairperson of the municipality's development standing committee, joined the CPI(M) at a reception held at the Vaikom Boat Jetty on Wednesday evening. CPI(M) Kottayam district secretary T.R. Raghunathan handed over the party flag to Ms. Sajeevan, welcoming her into the party. Spat over graft charges Ms. Sajeevan decided to leave the Kerala Congress and the UDF following a public spat with municipal vice-chairman P.T. Subash over alleged corruption charges raised against her. While the allegations had initially been brought up by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ms. Sajeevan maintained that she had received no support from the ruling council. Upon exiting the UDF, she alleged corruption running into crores of rupees in municipal projects, including grass cutting along the backwaters, mini MCDF, bed distribution, and construction of public toilets. UDF dismisses claims The UDF leadership, however, dismissed these claims. Municipal chairperson Preetha Rajesh stated that the civic body had spent only ₹25 lakh in total on the four projects cited by Ms. Sajeevan. In the 26-member municipal council, the UDF and the LDF now have 10 members each, while the BJP has four. The remaining two seats are held by a Congress Independent and a CPI(M) Independent respectively.

CPI(M) cracks down on members who publicly criticised Health Minister

Over a month after two Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] members in Pathanamthitta publicly criticised Health Minister Veena George in the wake of the collapse of a building at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam, the party has initiated disciplinary action against them. Party sources said here on Thursday that the Eraviperoor area committee has recommended to the district committee that former Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairman N. Rajeev be demoted to the Vallamkulam local committee for his remarks about the Minister. P.J. Johnson, a member of the Elanthoor local committee, has been suspended for three months. The action against Mr. Johnson has been initiated soon after his social media post criticising Ms. George. In the case of Mr. Rajeev, the district committee is expected to make a decision soon, a party source said. Mr. Rajeev had earlier been removed from the District CWC chairman post in connection with an alleged attempt to sabotage a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case involving a lawyer. Following this, he reportedly fell out of favour with the Minister, a party leader from Pathanamthitta. Mr. Johnson voiced his objections on social media regarding Ms. George's handling of the building collapse, writing: 'Let alone a Minister, Veena George does not even deserve to be an MLA. Nothing more to say… don't compel me to say more…' Factionalism The CPI(M) in Pathanamthitta has been fraught with factionalist tendencies with a section of the cadre voicing their resentment over various issues, including the alleged 'undue prominence' being accorded to Ms. George in the party. Following the recent reconstitution of the party State committee, veteran leader A. Padmakumar had publicly criticised the party leadership for excluding him from the committee while including Ms. George as an invitee. After intervention from senior leaders, Mr. Padmakumar softened his stance, acknowledging that taking his protest public had been a mistake. 'Not quit, but on leave' Meanwhile, CPI(M) Pathanamthitta district secretary Raju Abraham has dismissed reports claiming that the party's Ranni area committee secretary T.N. Sivankutty had resigned, clarifying that he is on leave for health reasons. 'Mr. Sivankutty had submitted a letter to the party's district committee requesting leave due to health issues. Based on this, the Ranni area committee meeting held on Wednesday assigned the temporary charge of secretary to K.P. Subhash Kumar. He will hold this responsibility until Mr. Sivankutty returns,' Mr. Abraham said.

10 votes registered at BJP district office address, Thrissur LS polls held on fraudulent list, alleges V.S. Sunil Kumar

V.S. Sunil Kumar, former Minister and LDF's 2024 Lok Sabha candidate from Thrissur, has alleged that the last General Elections in the constituency were conducted using a fraudulently prepared voters' list. Speaking to mediapersons in Thrissur on Thursday (August 14, 2025), Mr. Sunil Kumar claimed that 10 votes were registered under the address and number of the BJP Thrissur district committee office. 'In booth no. 42, at the address 'Deendayal Mandiram,' votes were added without even a house number. None of these individuals are permanent residents there,' he said. The CPI leader further alleged that BJP State vice president V. Unnikrishnan, a native of Malappuram, also led efforts to manipulate the voter rolls. 'His vote was registered at the address of the BJP Thrissur district vice president,' Mr. Sunil Kumar said. 'The BJP's victory in Thrissur was achieved through a voter list that was unjustly created,' he said, adding that 'such a mandate cannot stand' and demanded that the Election Commission cancel the electoral rolls. The CPI was continuing scrutiny of the voters' list and would come up with more details on the manipulations, he added.
