Fishlock goal gives Welsh boost at Women's Euros
That it would be Fishlock -- their all-time leading scorer and an iconic figure in the Welsh game -- that would score it was written in the stars after they qualified and were drawn in a devilishly difficult group alongside reigning champions England, France and 2017 winners Netherlands.
"I'm very grateful, and maybe after the tournament I'll let that sink in a little bit more," Fishlock told broadcaster ITV with typical modesty.
"I don't think you have many players anywhere in the world who are such servants to their nation," Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson told a press conference.
"She plays in Seattle. That flight is terrible, terrible, and she's never turned down Wales, and she's done it for years ... and you know, she's at the twilight of her career, and whenever she chooses to call it a day, she has demonstrated what it is to be a proud Welsh woman who will give everything to her country and to her team."
With Wales already a goal down, the 38-year-old struck in the 13th minute, poking home from close range. Though a flag immediately went up for offside, a VAR review reversed that decision and allowed the goal to stand, writing Fishlock's name into the history books.
The fact that Wales shipped three more goals in a 4-1 defeat mattered little to the Welsh fans, who sang her name and applauded loudly when she was substituted in the 87th minute.
"She's on the field, and she scores that goal, and everyone knows that is one of those moments that we should celebrate. We should celebrate it properly, because they just don't come around these firsts very often," Wilkinson said.

Forest lodge formal complaint over Spurs' £60m Morgan Gibbs-White bid
Nottingham Forest have formally lodged a complaint with the Premier League over Tottenham Hotspur's move for Morgan Gibbs-White. Forest have decided to take action after consulting their lawyers, with the club claiming Spurs were never given permission to speak to Gibbs-White about a transfer and therefore made an illegal approach. Forest also believe there was a breach in confidentiality around the existence of Gibbs-White's release clause. Gibbs-White looked set to join Tottenham after they expressed their intention to trigger a £60million release clause in the 25-year-old's contract, but Forest's complaint has halted the deal. Gibbs-White was due to undergo a medical with Spurs on Friday but the attacking midfielder was back at pre-season training with Forest on Monday morning. Forest posted photos of Gibbs-White arriving at the training ground on social media. The Premier League has not given a timeline for the conclusion of the case but the Tottenham head coach, Thomas Frank, would hope to have Gibbs-White signed before the squad fly out for their pre-season tour on July 28 and the friendly against Arsenal in Hong Kong three days later. Spurs have refused to comment on the action taken by Forest. After learning of Tottenham's move for Gibbs-White, who has two years left on his contract, Forest ceased all communication with the club. Forest officials claim Spurs breached Premier League Rule T.1, which states that any club wishing to talk to a player who is still under contract needs the prior written consent of the club the player is contracted to before an approach can be made. The rule also says that for any club to make a direct, or indirect, approach to a player who is under contract without that permission is in breach of the rules and could face disciplinary action. Gibbs-White, who has played four times for England, is understood to be ready for a fresh challenge at Tottenham and to play in the Champions League before the World Cup next year. Manchester City were interested in signing him at the start of the summer but chose to buy Rayan Cherki for £34million from Lyon instead, in a deal they completed before the start of the Club World Cup. Forest have already sold Anthony Elanga to Newcastle United for £55million, so to lose Gibbs-White in the same summer would be a huge blow to their head coach, Nuno Espírito Santo, and club owner Evangelos Marinakis. Forest would also pass on 10 per cent of any fee for Gibbs-White to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who agreed a sell-on clause when they sold him in 2022.

Viktor Gyokeres' move to Arsenal 'could fall through', claims report in Portugal, as talks continue with Sporting Lisbon over structure of £69m deal
Viktor Gyokeres' proposed move to Arsenal could fall through, according to reports from Portuguese media. However, MailSport understands that Sporting were hoping to drive up the player's price but Gyokeres still has his sights set on joining the Gunners. According to Portuguese outlet Record, there is a disagreement regarding bonuses being offered to the player. Sporting are said to be demanding €10million, which Arsenal are allegedly reluctant to include on top of a £62.4million transfer fee. The report goes on to claim that, while all scenarios are still open, there is 'a serious risk that negotiations will collapse completely'. The latest update in the transfer saga comes after Mikel Arteta appeared to have finally secured his target. Varandas had rejected Arsenal's last offer of £60million all in for Gyokeres and warned them they would not get the Sweden international unless they upped their offer and promised a greater sum up front as part of the bid's structure. The clubs are now close to agreement on a deal worth an initial £55million, with a further £7.4million in add-ons, while Gyokeres has agreed a five-year contract. Arsenal hope the move will be sealed in time for Gyokeres to fly to Asia for their pre-season tour at end of the week. Arsenal are also stepping up talks with Valencia for centre back Cristhian Mosquera and are increasingly confident of reaching agreement with 18-year old winger Ethan Nwaneri over a new contract. Elsewhere, Noni Madueke will undergo a medical on Monday ahead of his £52million switch from Chelsea, with Arsenal's next target is likely to be Crystal Palace 's Eberechi Eze. Gyokeres scored 54 goals for Sporting last term across all competitions, and is rated as one of the most prolific forwards in Europe. Since making a £20m switch from Coventry to Sporting in 2023, Gyokeres has gone on a remarkable scoring spree in Portugal, netting 97 times in just 102 appearances across two seasons. Gyokeres scored 43 goals for Coventry in two-and-a-half seasons, having initially joined on loan from Brighton. He has previously spoken of his desire to return to the English top flight, to atone for his fruitless spell with the Seagulls. Gyokeres played just eight times, scoring only once, in three-and-half-years on Brighton's books. The Swedish international's potential move would continue what has already been a busy summer for the Gunners as they look to clinch a first Premier League title in 21 years next season.
