Mismanagement, poor funding, corruption: Nigerian women's team rises above challenges to win WAFCON 2024 title

The Hindu29-07-2025
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted and splashed gifts on the triumphant national women's football team, which overcame poor preparations and missing payments to win its record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations title.
The Super Falcons' comeback 3-2 victory over host Morocco in Saturday's thrilling final was applauded by Tinubu and many in Nigeria, a football-loving nation where passion and hard work often triumph over institutional challenges.

The continental success, analysts say, papers over the mismanagement of the women's team by the country's authorities. The success of the country had come in spite of the country.
'They have been able to dominate even though the Nigerian football authorities do not put as much funding, care, attention, and planning into the way the women's national team is run,' Solace Chukwu, a Lagos-based football analyst, told The Associated Press.
The team had been owed match bonuses for years, once resulting in a training boycott in 2022. Even as it triumphed on the way to the finals in Morocco, the backlog of payments was only approved by the President days before Saturday's final. The Falcons also could not hold competitive friendly matches, and their training kits were said not to have been available.
It is a common problem in Nigeria where sporting competitions are often dogged by issues of underfunding, corruption, and mismanagement that have led to high-profile scandals, resulting in athletes choosing to represent other countries in protest.
Women's teams are affected the most, partly because of how women have always been viewed in Nigerian society, according to Oluwashina Okeleji, a sports analyst with a focus on Africa.

'The argument from the (Nigerian) federation is that the men bring more money than the women, but the truth is the women bring most prestige, honours, and titles to Nigeria,' Okeleji said.
A spokesperson for the Nigeria Football Federation, the country's governing football body, declined to respond to the allegations.
The Nigerian women's team has exercised a near-total dominance in African football, which is partly credited to a head start in the women's game. Nigeria created the first football league for women in 1978, years before their counterparts on the continent.

However, the gains have not catapulted the team to similar achievements on the global stage in what analysts say is a failure of the authorities to capitalise on this early advantage.
'The men's team is huge generally within the administration of Nigerian football as the cash cow,' Chukwu said.
The gifts now promised by the president, including money and property, have not convinced the fans.
'This one-time payment and apartment do not make any sense. For what? What they need is investment in the facilities, the staff, and payment. The lack of investment in women's football is one of the reasons why it is not as high quality as the men's,' Funmi Obasa, a football fan in Abuja who follows the women's team, told AP.

Wrestling Federation of India suspend 11 athletes for fake birth certificates

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) suspended 11 wrestlers for submitting fake birth certificates. The action comes after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) verified a set of 110 documents, raising serious concerns about the integrity of age-group competitions.A WFI official, speaking to PTI, confirmed the suspension and said the federation is determined to ensure no genuine wrestler is disadvantaged. 'We have already taken some steps and continue to do the needful. The WFI wants a clean system where no genuine wrestler is wronged. No one should get any unfair advantage,' the official issue of age fraud when it comes to wrestlers competing in junior categories has plagued the sport in India for years. In many cases, athletes allegedly procured fake birth certificates—sometimes registered 12 to 15 years after birth—to compete in younger age brackets or represent other states. The MCD, after cross-checking the certificates forwarded by WFI, stated that while 95 of them were issued under orders from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), 11 were found to be fake, photoshopped, or digitally manipulated. These belonged to wrestlers Saksham, Manuj, Kavita, Anshu, Arush Rana, Shubham, Gautam, Jagrup Dhankar, Nakul, Dushyant, and Siddharth the 11 fake certificates identified, six originated from Delhi's Narela zone, two from Najafgarh, and one each from Rohini, Civil Lines, and City zone. WFI confirmed that suspension notices were sent to six wrestlers on August 7, with five others already suspended earlier for similar MCD clarified its role, stating, '95 birth certificates have been issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi only after getting orders from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and there is no lapse on the part of the MCD.' It also found two certificates where the date of registration had been deliberately altered to mislead TO SPORTS MINISTRYMeanwhile, Neeraj Kumar, father of Delhi-based wrestler Ritika, has filed a complaint with the sports ministry alleging a violation of domicile norms. He claimed that Haryana's Ishika was allowed to compete for Delhi in a recent state-level 53kg event, and demanded an inquiry to uphold transparency and fair play in selection processes.- EndsMust Watch

'Idhar hi maar isko': Virat Kohli and KL Rahul's fired-up advice to young pacer goes viral

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul (Image credit: AFP) NEW DELHI: Indian pacer Harshit Rana recently opened up about a heated on-field exchange with Australian speedster Mitchell Starc during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he peppered Starc with bouncers before dismissing him for 26 — all while receiving spirited backing from senior pros Virat Kohli and KL Rahul . The duel ignited when Rana unleashed a barrage of short balls at Starc, one of which struck the Aussie on the helmet. Starc, also his Kolkata Knight Riders teammate in the IPL, responded with a trademark smirk and a warning: Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Harshit, I bowl faster than you. I've got a long memory." Speaking on the BeerBiceps podcast, Rana shared his thoughts during that tense moment, admitting a mix of adrenaline and fear as he walked back to his mark. 'I bowled him a bouncer after a long time. One hit his helmet. When he sledged, I just laughed. But while walking back, I thought, 'Mar gaya, ab ye mujhe bouncer maarega!'' Poll Do you believe that the rivalry between India and Australia adds excitement to cricket? Absolutely! Not really, it's just another match. 'And then from behind, Virat bhai and KL bhai were shouting from the slips — 'Maarta reh, maarta reh, idhar hi maar isko!' I thought, 'Bhaiya aap toh bach jaoge, mere toh lagne wali hai!'' Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj press conference: India stars answer all questions As fate would have it, Starc did retaliate later, striking Rana on the helmet during the second Test. But the young Indian pacer took it in stride, chalking it up to the spirit of the contest. Rana's journey with the Indian team has had its ups and downs. While he has impressed in phases — including his stint in Australia — consistency at the international level has remained elusive. Most recently, he was part of the Test squad against England as a backup but was later released. Nevertheless, Rana remains an active contributor in white-ball formats and was a member of the Indian side that clinched the Champions Trophy. Angad Cheema emerges leader in round three

Last Updated: Ahmedabad, Aug 7 (PTI) Chandigarh golfer Angad Cheema remained steadfast in his approach, returning a three-under 69, to move into the lead in round three of the Rs 1 crore India Open here on Thursday. Angad, who had rounds of 69 and 67 on the first two days at the Kensville Golf & Country Club, has a three-day aggregate of 11-under 205 going into the final day. Noida golfer Amardeep Malik (69-65-72) carded an even-par 72 in the penultimate round to occupy second position at a total of 10-under 206. Another Chandigarh golfer Karandeep Kochhar (69-70-69), carded a 69 to be placed third. Pune's Udayan Mane, who began the week with a 78, fired a 66 for the second straight day to make a brilliant comeback on the leaderboard. He gained 11 spots on Thursday to be placed tied-fourth at six-under 210 along with Delhi's Arjun Prasad (69). Delhi-based Rakshit Dahiya, the only amateur to make the cut, ended the day in 10th position at two-under 214 following a round of 71. Local golfer Varun Parikh came up with a 72 to be tied 13th at even-par 216. Angad Cheema, who was overnight second being two shots off the lead, made a solid start making pars all through the front-nine. The 35-year-old, winner of the last PGTI event in April this year, began the back-nine with a bogey on the 10th but came roaring back with four birdies, including three from a range of 10 to 15 feet. 'I played a steady round today hitting all greens in regulation. My putter got hot on the back-nine that helped me sink a lot of long putts. That was the big difference between my front-nine and back-nine," said Cheema. 'Playing the qualifying event of The Open in the UK this summer, was a memorable experience and gave me great international exposure as I competed in a strong field at a links course in conditions totally different from what we're used to here in India. I would say it benefitted my game a lot. 'Taking a break from golf during the off-season has also helped me come back fresh and eager to perform well," he added. Amardeep Malik, the overnight leader by two shots, made three birdies and three bogeys on Thursday to drop to second position. Malik is still within touching distance of the lead being just one shot back.
