Furious Ryanair customer abandons holiday over £55 charge

Hina said she refused to pay the 'ridiculous' fee - which cost almost as much as her £67 plane ticket to Lithuania.
The pharmacist, who was celebrating passing her prescription course, said she went to eat at a Nepalese restaurant instead, as she felt it was a better way to spend money.
Hina claims that the charge does not correspond to the service provided, which consists of the staff member entering her passport details into the system.
Hina, from Slough, Berkshire, said: "It was my first trip in eight months, I just finished my prescribing course and I was going to treat myself, I thought why not.
"They sent me an email to check in but it went to my junk and I genuinely forgot to check in.
"There was a sign on the website saying you can check in up to 40 minutes before so I thought that's fine.
"About an hour before I made it to the desk and I asked if I could check in and she said yes but it will cost £55.
"I'd rather not, I can have a health assessment for £55 from someone with a degree, not for someone to put my passport details in.
"I decided not to go but there was nowhere immediately saying on the website that this is the amount that they'd charged.
"Part of abandoning the trip was just my annoyance, what they were charging was really unfair for the job that they had to do.
"It was almost as expensive as my actual flight there. Everything I had booked was refundable anyways so in this situation I'd rather not.
"I went up to her and said 'are you serious, £55?' I said I'm not going to pay that, and she said 'okay, fine.'
"I know what you're doing, checking my passport, putting in my passport number and a few details and that is it. The charge in relation to what you're doing is ridiculous.
"I thought it was free but people have said on my post that Ryanair had been doing this for three or four years, but I had no idea.
"I went to a Nepalese restaurant an hour away from Stansted. I thought I won't think about the fight, I'll go and have some momos [steamed dumplings].
"My money is better spent getting food than paying £55 to check in."
The TikTok creator said that while Ryanair has cheap fares, it is not worth the 'inflexible' customer service and disregard for their passengers.
Hina vows that she will not be travelling with Ryanair again and would rather spend more money for a more reliable airline.
Hina said: "If you go to any other airlines they'll make every effort to make sure you're on the plane, but with Ryanair I don't think they care.
"People jump on the bandwagon of getting cheap flights and don't realise there's all these hidden charges.
"There's also the inflexibility of customer service that makes me think I'm not getting my money's worth.
"It was the right decision, I'd rather do that than take a flight with them, which I won't be doing in future."
A Ryanair spokesman said: "In accordance with Ryanair's T&Cs, which this passenger agreed to at the time of booking, this passenger failed to check-in online before arriving at London Stansted Airport (13 May).
"Therefore, this passenger was correctly asked to pay the standard airport check-in fee when checking in at the airport.
"All passengers travelling with Ryanair agree to check-in online before arriving at their departure airport and all passengers are sent an email reminding them to do so 24hrs before departure.
"This passenger chose not to pay the airport check-in fee and board her flight from London Stansted to Kaunas (13 May)."

Matcha - a form of powdered green tea whisked and mixed with milk to make a latte - has become Gen Z's drink of choice. The trendy health drink has become popular with teenagers and young adults after being promoted by social media influencers - to the extent that Japan has started to see shortages. In the video, posted on TikTok, Caroll immediately could not hide her disgust, going 'Oh, oh!' as she tried the disagreeable flavour. When her granddaughter, who was filming, said the drink wasn't 'bad', Caroll didn't hold back as she gave it a brutal assessment. 'It is bad, it's horrible,' she exclaimed, looking at the green drink beside her in disdain. 'And when you look at it, it looks as though somebody's puked in there. It's right weak!' 'I don't get you young'uns,' she added in the video caption. 'A proper diva wants a cuppa with six sugars, a good stir and a cig in me hand.' The video has gone viral on social media, racking up more than 700,000 views. And it appeared most people were in agreement, as one wrote: 'Matcha is disgusting.' A second added: 'Proof that hype distorts your tastebuds, that was a purely unbiased opinion.' 'Confirmed for me Matcha fans are basically gaslighting us into thinking it's nice,' commented a third, while another added: 'She's so real about matcha it's like dirt.' One person said: 'Her smacking her lips at the bitterness of the matcha has me cracking.' For another, the video brought back a fond memory, writing: 'Haven't had my Nan since I was 13 but this is exactly how she would react, just the east London version. thank you for the laugh.' The tea, made from the finely ground powder of green tea leaves specially grown in shade, has been loved by Japan in particular since the 12th century when Buddhist monks introduced the nation to it. Over the past decade, production has nearly tripled, with Japan producing 4,176 tonnes of matcha in 2023. Consumption of the antioxidant-rich green tea 'reached a record high last year', according to Fumi Ueki, the chief of one of Japan's largest tea companies. And soaring demand, largely driven by online trends, has prompted warning of further shortages this year. Major influencers like Sophie Habboo and Kourtney Kardashian have espoused the benefits of matcha. Matcha tea is made by combining fine matcha powder and hot water with a special matcha whisk, which is used to form a creamy foam that sits on the tea. Proponents say the tea can boost the brain's health, due to its high concentration of polyphenols, chlorophyll, caffeine and L-theanine. The demand largely comes from outside Japan - while matcha and leaf green-tea consumption has fallen inside the country, global sales are expected to nearly double from £2.2bn in 2023 to £3.9bn by 2028. In the past year alone, sales of matcha products have doubled in the UK. The arrival of the US cafe Blank Street to Britain's high streets in 2020 is thought to have led to a surge in the popularity here, with its range of matcha teas combined with other flavours such as blueberry and white chocolate. What are the health benefits of matcha? - Rich in protective polyphenols - Boosts brain health, function and alertness - May relieve stress - Can support healthy heart and lungs - May be good for bone health - Can aid weight management - Can balance blood glucose - May improve gut health The spike in demand has become such a problem that last year two of Japan's biggest tea companies, Ippodo and Marukyu Koyamaen, announced unprecedented purchase limits on matcha products. But mounting evidence suggests too much can trigger iron deficiency. Left untreated, this can raise the risk of severe infections as well as life-threatening heart failure. Iron, found in red meat and a variety of vegetables, is crucial for the production of red blood cells, which transport oxygen to the organs. It is also vital for a healthy immune system. Experts now say that drinking just one matcha tea a day could cause problems. Research suggests teenage girls, pregnant and post-menopausal women are at the highest risk of a matcha-related iron deficiency. 'People need to be aware of the potential risks of this drink,' says Dr Jeannine Baumgartner, an expert in nutrition and researcher at King's College London, who has studied matcha. 'There is a real danger of a deficiency, particularly for younger women who have higher iron needs. It has long been known that green tea can, in some cases, trigger an iron deficiency. This is because it contains high levels of tannins – a compound which gives tea its bitter flavour. Research shows that tannins attach to iron molecules in the digestive system and prevent them from being absorbed. A major review of over 150 studies in 2010 published by the Journal of Chinese Medicine found that consumption of more than three cups of regular green tea a day reduced iron absorption. However, it is believed that matcha has an even greater effect, as one cup has nearly seven times as many tannins as a similarly sized green tea. As well as the tannins, caffeine has also been shown to reduce iron absorption and, per gram, matcha can contain up to four times as much caffeine as coffee. Experts say this means that even one matcha a day could have health impacts. 'Matcha is much more problematic than green tea, as it is more concentrated so affects iron absorption even more,' says Prof Baumgartner. 'Even one cup, if it is poorly timed, either during or up to two hours after a meal, will affect your iron levels.' Iron deficiency is already a problem. Three per cent of men and 8 per cent of women in the UK have the iron deficiency condition anaemia, and it is on the rise. Symptoms include a yellowing of the skin, dizziness and depression. Last year there was a tenfold rise in the number of people hospitalised with iron deficiency, with nearly 200,000 being admitted. But there are steps that matcha drinkers can take to protect themselves against this complication. 'If you add milk or lemon juice, it can neutralise the tannins, which can help with iron absorption,' says Sarah Carolides, a London based nutritionist. 'It's also best to avoid using oat milk in your matcha latte as oats contain phytates, an acid which can also interfere with iron absorption.' Timing is key for those considering a cup of green tea. Prof Baumgartner recommends against drinking matcha within three hours before or after a meal. A 1983 study revealed a cup of green tea while eating a hamburger meal reduced iron consumption by 68 per cent. As drinking habits change experts are calling for the guidelines to doctors looking out for iron deficiency to be updated. 'Doctors and GPs are not aware of the link between drinks and iron absorption and that really needs to change,' says Prof Baumgartner.

WE'VE all heard of return pallets, but have you seen the lost luggage trend that's taken social media by storm? Recently, influencers have been going wild for unclaimed suitcases, with many splashing hundreds of pounds on the mystery bags. 7 7 7 But would you risk spending over £100 on someone's lost luggage - not having a clue what you'd find inside, but with a chance that the contents could be worth thousands? After seeing many TikTokers and YouTubers open lost luggage and finding all things from a Kindle, a huge selection of clothes and even hair straighteners, to a brand new pair of Ugg boots and an iPad, I decided to see what the fuss was all about. Last year alone, Google Trends saw a 100 per cent spike in searches for 'lost luggage' - abandoned suitcases usually full to the brim with clothes, souvenirs and random items. The 'lost and unclaimed' luggage comes from 'the world's busiest airports' and while some may find designer buys, quirky gifts or sometimes even gadgets, the possibilities are as varied as the travellers who once packed them. But there are a number of major drawbacks when buying lost luggage…the size and brand of the suitcase you receive will be totally random. Not only this, but if a person loses their luggage on the way back from a holiday, there's likely to be worn clothing inside - yes, you heard that correctly. After hearing countless content creators order theirs from Undelivrd, I managed to get my hands on one. According to those at Undelivrd, selling the lost luggage is a 'sustainable and economical way of dealing' with it. Rather than piles of suitcases heading straight to the dump, airports are auctioning them off to give the abandoned cases and the items inside a new 'forever home'. Of course, personal details are removed, but those at Undelivrd claimed that 'apart from that, everything is left as is.' Unveiling the Shocking Reality of Lost Luggage Purchases So I ordered myself a suitcase, which was listed online for £129.99. It ended up costing me £136.98 once the postage fees were piled on top, so not cheap. But would I find some steals? Or just a bunch of tatt and some dirty knickers? Much to my surprise, the suitcase only took a week to arrive. No box in sight, the case was wrapped in a black bin bag and was far from luxe. Not knowing the contents made it very exciting, but unsure on the condition of what I would find, I nervously got my Marigold Gloves at the ready. The sweaty, stale smell that was equivalent to the stench of a teenage boy's bedroom was horrendous Abby Wilson In the hope of stumbling upon some unexpected treasurers, I eagerly ripped off the bin bag, to find a black American Tourister case. After a quick Google search, I spotted that such suitcases are available to buy online for £129 - so technically you've made the money back on the case itself, even though it had clearly been used on numerous occasions and was visibly quite battered. But I didn't even have to unzip the case for the grim, musty smell to invade my nostrils. Think of a room full of years of mould and mildew - that's what it smelt like. The sweaty, stale smell that was equivalent to the stench of a teenage boy's bedroom was horrendous and is still, days later, giving me flashbacks and lingering in my nose. 7 7 7 While I was hoping to get my hands on a woman's suitcase, in the hope of topping up my wardrobe with some new clothes or maybe even some jewellery, I was disappointed to see that I had been sent a man's case. And I was even more gutted when I noticed that it was full of clothes that had clearly been worn. If you thought smelly socks were bad, I was on the verge of gagging when I spotted three pairs of worn pants. It appears that the man this case belonged to had potentially been on holiday to Portugal, as I immediately spotted two Algarve Jazz Festival grey t-shirts. Alongside this, there was an empty toiletry bag and an unbranded navy hoodie, which wasn't short of stains. How to buy lost luggage THE famous US store which sells off unclaimed baggage has launched an online shop - so you can buy more travellers' lost items. The Unclaimed Baggage Center, located in Alabama, has long been a destination for treasure hunters wanting to find a bargain from the abandoned suitcases. Located in the tiny town of Scottsboro, which has a population of 14,000, it is an unlikely tourist hotspot. Inside is a megastore of misplaced possessions taken from tens of thousands of suitcases, rucksacks and duffel bags, all lost on commercial flights across the US. Now, you don't have to travel to the US and can do your shopping online with their new online store. The centre has launched the online shopping experience as part of their 50th anniversary, having opened in 1970. Everything from clothing to electronics are found on the website - current items for sale include high-street dresses from $8 up to 18K bracelets worth over $13,000. They also have a weird and wonderful section which ranges from gold necklaces and diving equipment to designer gowns and signed memorabilia. Legally, airlines have a duty to reunite luggage with their owners within 90 days, but if that fails, bags end up at the centre. So frequent are these deliveries that the Unclaimed Baggage Center has around one million items on sale at any time, with 7,000 new items added to the shop floor every day. Not everything that is found is sold - a third is binned, including all underwear, while another third of it is donated to charity. Brenda Cantrell, the store's brand ambassador, says: 'Less than half a per cent of all lost luggage fails to make it back to its owners, but that's still thousands of bags every year. 'And the vast majority of those make their way here. We have exclusive contracts with all the major US carriers, making us the only store of this kind anywhere in the country.' According to journalist Jonathon Thompson who went there himself, the 40,000sqft centre is "more like a swanky department store than a musty charity shop," adding that items are separated into sections, which includes electronics, jewellery and even wedding clothes. Customers have also found bargains while shopping there - one person bought a £65 vase, only to find out later it was worth £15,000, while one piece of art valued at £45 was actually worth £20,000. The guy this suitcase belonged to was clearly a football fan, as I also stumbled across a Bayer 04 Leverkusen football scarf, which you can buy online for £14. As well as this, there was also a Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2023/24 home jersey, which are being flogged online for just under £70. Next, I spotted a H&M black hoodie, which is currently on the website for £27.99, as well as a pair of blue Adidas shorts, which if you buy them new, are £35. Much to my dismay, I was only halfway through and incredibly disappointed. Having said that, things appeared to look up when I saw a small The White Company toiletry bag. Yes, you get them free when you fly with British Airways, but it was the most exciting thing I'd seen so far, without a doubt. The beauty bags, which contain an eye mask, ear plugs and a mini toothbrush, are being flogged for £7 on eBay and are perfect for travelling. It was un-unused, unlike a lot of the other stuff in this case. Following this, I found a pair of barely worn, brown leather shoes from Asda, which are still available to order from the site for £25. And that's not all, as I also (unfortunately) found three pairs of Jack & Jones boxers, which when bought new, are £45 a pack. In total, the contents of my lost luggage - bought new - came to £223.98, not as high as I had hoped. If you add on the cost of the actual suitcase, it totals just over £350. While many may think that selling-on lost luggage contents could be a good earner, my haul proves that it is definitely a gamble. The smell of the case is still haunting me, so the thought of going through it all again and posting it on Vinted in the hope of earning a quick buck is not something I'm up for. Despite the battered hoodies and worn socks, everything was in reasonably decent condition, so I guess you could say it wasn't a total waste of time. But if you're hoping to find a new iPad or a posh designer bag, you should be aware that you'll have to take a chance when searching through lost luggage.

It also showed that more than one in 10 (14%) struggle to remember when the last time they did something indulgent just for themselves. ‌ Back-to-back meetings, endless to-do lists, and juggling the needs of others leaves Brits with very little time for themselves, with just 36% of people managing to take a moment for 'me time' themselves every day. Pets and digital distractions, as well as guilt, are also among the top reasons, alongside money, that people struggle to find time.
