Making Mardi Gras greener and cleaner in downtown Mobile
It is a LoDa initiative to combat litter left over after parades that Downtown Mobile Alliance is making its mission to make Mardi Gras greener and cleaner.

Downtown Mobile Alliance Communications Director Carol Hunter told that it also is an initiative for parade-goers to take part in as well.
'We really, during Mardi Gras, are focused on people picking up after themselves, taking care of disposing of their own litter,' Hunter said. 'And also paying attention to the opportunity to recycle.'
Hunter said that the City of Mobile's street sweepers clean up thousands of pounds of trash after parades.
'It is good to know that there is a team out there dedicated to picking up what can be recycled, keeping it out of the landfill,' Hunter said.
To help eliminate that problem, the city and DMA have put out extra purple trash cans and recycling bins along parade routes of the city.
'Last year, they collected more than 11,000 pounds of recyclables,' Hunter said. 'And you know, this year, it's always encouraging If you collect less.'
'Maybe that means people are recycling on their own,' she continued.
Say No to the Glow is a new effort by DMA to eliminate glow sticks as Mardi Gras throws during Mobile parades.
Hunter said that glow sticks left on streets and sidewalks, get caught up and clogged in street sweepers.
'They've become pretty popular,' Hunter said regarding glow sticks being used as throws.

'But they are devastating to the environment; they never break down,' she said. 'They wind up in the landscaping where they're thrown.'
DMA asks the public to have fun and enjoy the parades downtown but to also be mindful of making the city a cleaner place.

'We've looked at the exhibits, and we've kind of mapped out what we would exhibit in the museum. There are thousands and thousands of artifacts for this museum, and they are all over the East Coast.' Having launched 74 years ago, the SS United States holds the transatlantic speed records during her maiden voyage and has carried over 1 million passengers during her time on the water before being docked in 1996. 'The record's never been broken, both eastbound and westbound, never been broken,' Jones added. 'It will never be matched, and so it's really that, you know, we, the SS United States Conservancy, have tried since 2011 to have this ship repurposed as a multi-purpose stationary ship, hotel rooms, event spaces, eateries, as such.' Resident stumped over new bin as FOGO rollout ramps up before council deadline
Councils across the country are ramping up distribution of food and garden organics (FOGO) bins, but Australians are still divided by the rollout — with one resident telling Yahoo News she was a bit bemused when a small bin "just turned up at my door one day". Ivy Boulton, who resides in Branxton in the NSW Hunter Valley said she received "no warning" when a countertop FOGO bin arrived at her door in June. Despite saying she'll do her best to incorporate the new bin into her waste disposal routine, she's not too sure if others will follow suit. "It's just an extra step in what they already have in their routine with the red and the yellow bins... People are lazy," she told Yahoo. Cessnock City Council, responsible for the rollout where Ivy lives, did not respond when contacted by Yahoo about the ongoing rollout. "Worst idea they ever had," one woman said. "I'm all for recycling and separating rubbish... [but] with a bigger family our general waste bin only gets picked up every fortnight, and it's not enough for us, and [we] have more rubbish lying around smelling." Ivy told Yahoo News some have admitted to her they use their countertop FOGO bin as a "door stopper", while another woman online confessed, "I didn't even know this was becoming a thing!". However other Aussies in the state say they are all for the new FOGO system. "[Mine] goes under my sink. FOGO is brilliant... our red bin waste dropped dramatically. FOGO is good, use it," one said, while another claimed, "I like mine". Ivy has been using her FOGO since it was delivered, but explained her household green waste "barely even covers the bottom of the bin". "I have been using it since I got it but it's taking some getting used to, and I need to make sure to empty it regularly because it does smell," she said. New South Wales pledges FOGO mandate by 2030 Cessnock City Council, alongside neighbouring Maitland City Council and Singleton Council, launched a FOGO collection across the Hunter Region at the end of June, with authorities aiming to meet the state government's pledge of mandating FOGO collection by 2030. "FOGO is a game changer. We're proud to be delivering it across Cessnock, Maitland and Singleton and giving our communities a real opportunity to lead the way in reducing landfill and turning waste into something worthwhile," Cessnock Mayor Dan Watton said. "FOGO will have significant long-term benefits for our environment, economy and community." The state mandate means food scraps and garden waste will be collected separately from regular household waste, and sent to composting. Mobile apartment complex overrun with trash and critters
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) —Garbage piling up, safety hazards, and wildlife roaming the grounds have all become commonplace, a tenant from the Crossings at Pinebrook says. Residents wake up to find Jubilee in Fairhope Residents say their complaints have been ignored, but News 5 was able to get some answers. Management blames the problem on a broken trash compactor and says they are working to resolve the problem. One resident who did not want her name or face shown said the trash problem is out of control. 'Mattresses, tires, like bags of like, seafood boils everywhere. So it smells, it smells bad, but think about it. It's so hot, and then you've got trash down in the sun,' she said. She said the garbage is also attracting some unwanted visitors around the apartment. 'We've had vultures, raccoons, possums. People think I'm joking, I say, no, no. They literally fly over the trash. This isn't a zoo,' she explained. While the area by the trash compactor has the largest amount of garbage, this resident said it's not her only concern, as there are a number of other trash bags, littered items, and food scattered throughout the complex. 'You see how filthy this is? I hate to say it, but this is a good day for this apartment,' she said. The garbage isn't the only complaint she's had that's gone unaddressed by the apartment. There's a number of safety issues including downed stop signs, huge potholes, and exposed wires throughout the complex. 'There's supposed to be a stop sign right there. And this is a safety issue because, again, not just kids, but people walk through here all the time,' she continued. Residents say they just want basic upkeep before conditions get any worse. Foshee Residential is the management company for the Crossings at Pinebrook. A spokesperson shared a message with us that was sent to residents today. 'We understand that the recent issues with the trash collection have been frustrating for everyone, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused,' the statement read.
