Egypt Marks Suez Canal 69th Nationalization Anniversary.. Reaffirms Commitment to Global Supply Chain Sustainability

Taarek Refaat
Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) reaffirmed the canal's strategic role in global trade and its commitment to sustainable and secure navigation, as Egypt marks the 69th anniversary of the nationalization of the Suez Canal.
In remarks delivered during a commemorative ceremony, Rabie highlighted the canal's ongoing adherence to international conventions governing free maritime navigation, while underscoring Egypt's unwavering sovereignty over the waterway.
'We are committed to upholding our pivotal role in ensuring sustainability across global supply chains, and we operate in accordance with international charters and treaties, without compromising Egyptian sovereignty,' Rabie stated.
The Suez Canal was nationalized on July 26, 1956, a landmark moment in Egypt's modern history that asserted national control over one of the world's most vital maritime corridors. Rabie praised the generations of Egyptian leaders and workers who have managed and modernized the canal since that time.
'We salute the pioneers who led the nationalization and laid the foundations of development. We continue their mission with more dedication and achievement,' he said.
The SCA chief noted that canal operations are governed by a robust legal framework, particularly the Navigation Regulations and the 1888 Constantinople Convention, which guarantees freedom of navigation through the canal for all vessels in both peace and wartime.
Under Egypt's stewardship, the canal has seen continuous upgrades to maintain its status as the shortest, fastest, and safest maritime route between East and West. Rabie pointed to recent development projects that have enhanced the canal's capacity, navigational safety, and competitiveness.
Rabie also extended his gratitude to all SCA personnel and canal pilots, relaying personal appreciation from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He emphasized the professionalism of the canal's pilots, describing them as exemplary ambassadors of Egypt.
'Our pilots have consistently risen to the challenge, demonstrating exceptional dedication under all circumstances. Their professionalism ensures the safety and sustainability of navigation through the canal,' he added.
As global shipping continues to face mounting challenges, from geopolitical disruptions to climate-related vulnerabilities, the Suez Canal remains a critical artery for international trade, handling over 12% of global commerce annually.
Egypt's reaffirmation of its commitment to international maritime norms, coupled with continued investment in canal infrastructure, is seen as a signal to global partners that the Suez Canal will remain a reliable, neutral, and efficient trade route in an increasingly complex world.

Tsukerman: Sisi Sent a Clear Message by Invoking Trump in Gaza Speech

H-Tayea Geopolitical analyst Irina Tsukerman has weighed in on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's speech delivered on Monday, describing it as a calculated and strategic appeal that reframes the Gaza crisis as a test of global leadership, and places US President Donald Trump at the center of that equation. In his address yesterday, President Sisi broke with conventional diplomatic language by directly invoking Trump by name, presenting the former U.S. president as the only global figure capable of ending the war in Gaza. According to Tsukerman, this was far from symbolic. 'It was a deliberate and pointed message,' she said, 'meant to express frustration with the current stagnation in diplomacy and to draw attention to Trump's historical influence over Israel and regional dynamics.' Sisi's speech, which came amid continued humanitarian collapse in Gaza, also emphasized Egypt's ongoing role as mediator and aid facilitator. He detailed the efforts to coordinate humanitarian access through the Rafah and Kerem Abu Salem crossings, stressing that 600 to 700 trucks per day are needed to meet basic needs—far more than what is currently allowed. Tsukerman noted that this language was aimed at highlighting Egypt's burden, while subtly pushing Israel, Hamas, and the United States to remove obstacles that are blocking critical aid. She also pointed out that Sisi's direct reference to Trump served as a clear rebuke to the current U.S. administration, especially in light of the recent collapse of the Doha talks, which failed to yield any breakthrough. By bypassing traditional multilateral diplomacy, Sisi appeared to be advocating for decisive personality-driven action, reminiscent of previous Trump-era interventions in the region. In his remarks, Sisi also made it clear that Egypt rejects any proposal for the displacement of Palestinians into Sinai, asserting that Egypt would not tolerate forced relocation under any circumstances. Tsukerman emphasized that this statement was more than a domestic message—it was a reaffirmation of Egypt's long-standing support for the two-state solution and a firm stance against any plan that seeks to resolve the crisis at the expense of Egyptian sovereignty or regional stability. 'Sisi's message was not just about aid or diplomacy,' Tsukerman said. 'It was about redefining the conversation around Gaza and assigning responsibility to the international actors who can actually shift the outcome.' The speech, delivered on Monday, was one of the most assertive public statements by the Egyptian president since the beginning of the current Gaza war. And by placing the burden of action on Trump's shoulders, Sisi reframed the crisis as not just a regional conflict, but a moment of global reckoning. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Remittances up, dollar down: EGP finds support amid uncertain global outlook - Economy

The Egyptian pound has continued to strengthen modestly against the US dollar, with the official exchange rate falling below EGP 49 for the first time since late October 2024, nearly nine months ago. As of Monday, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) listed the dollar at EGP 48.6 for buying and EGP 48.7 for selling, down from EGP 49.0 and EGP 49.1, respectively, at the close of trading last Thursday. Every month, the dollar has depreciated against the pound by roughly 1.7 percent. Year-on-year, however, it remains up by around 0.7 percent, according to Ahram Online calculations based on the greenback rate from a range of public and private banks. 'The recent appreciation of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar signals a modest rebalancing in the foreign exchange market,' banking expert Hani Abou El-Fotouh told Ahram Online. 'This has been driven by local improvements, including a narrowing of the gap between official and parallel market rates, increased access to foreign currency through formal channels, and stronger FX inflows from debt instruments and anticipated investments.' Abou El-Fotouh noted that remittance flows have shown a mild recovery, while import controls remain disciplined, helping to reduce pressure on foreign currency demand. Remittances from Egyptians abroad have maintained the sharp rise recorded between July 2024 and May 2025, reaching $32.8 billion — a 69.6 per cent increase year-on-year — according to the latest figures from the CBE. 'However, in my view, this trend is fragile unless supported by deeper structural reforms, particularly those that boost exports and expand domestic production capacity. On the global level, the dollar remains resilient, supported by robust US data and expectations of prolonged high interest rates. Relying solely on short-term inflows or administrative measures is unsustainable. Achieving genuine currency stability requires addressing underlying economic imbalances, especially in the context of a tightening global monetary environment,' he warned. A recent report by US investment bank Goldman Sachs echoed that caution, suggesting that the Egyptian pound remains undervalued by around 30 percent relative to its fair value. The bank said there is room for further appreciation, particularly if portfolio inflows continue and key monetary indicators improve. The report highlighted that the pound has held steady since its devaluation in March 2024, with the convergence of official and parallel market rates signalling growing investor confidence in Egypt's exchange rate policy, despite ongoing geopolitical challenges in the region. Goldman Sachs also pointed to anchored expectations and low volatility, with the official exchange rate fluctuating within a narrow band since the beginning of the year. On the fundamentals front, it cited a rebound in Egypt's foreign reserves and a reversal in the banking sector's net foreign asset position, which swung from a $17.6 billion deficit at the start of 2023 to a $4.8 billion surplus by May 2025. Meanwhile, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission is scheduled to visit Egypt in September to conduct the fifth and sixth reviews of the country's $8 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) loan programme. Both reviews are expected to be completed by December. The mission will also begin discussions for the first review of Egypt's $1.3 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) loan programme, which is likewise expected to conclude before the end of the year. Completion of all three reviews would make Egypt eligible to receive a combined disbursement of over $2.4 billion. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
