Project to improve electric vehicle charging in south east launches public consultation
People in Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford City and Wexford are being asked to submit their views and thoughts on improving electric vehicle charging infrastructure in their counties through an online questionnaire.
The public consultation to develop electric vehicle (EV) technology in the south east launched on Thursday, May 1 and will remain open for submissions until 4pm on May 30.
The goal of the strategy is to address the challenges and opportunities in deploying EV charging infrastructure in the south-east region.
'This consultation invites residents, stakeholders, and the general public to share their views and input on the future of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in their areas,' said a spokesperson.
'By developing a comprehensive network of strategically located charging stations, the strategy is intended to support the growing number of EVs on our roads, ensuring that all areas are adequately served and help meet our climate action targets.'
As part of this regional consultation, stakeholders are asked to consider two key types of local charging infrastructure when providing their inputs.
Firstly, destination charging which involves installing charging stations at popular destinations such as shopping centres, hotels, and tourist attractions.
Secondly, neighbourhood charging focuses on providing charging options within residential areas, making it easy for EV users to charge their vehicles convenient to their residence.
The Regional and Local EV Charging Network Plan published for consultation by ZEVI (Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland) in 2024 sets out minimum charging capacity requirements for local authorities per geographical area.
Charging along major highways and travel routes are being supported separately by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
'Your feedback will be instrumental in developing a comprehensive EV charging infrastructure strategy that meets the needs of our communities and facilitates sustainable transport,' added the spokesperson.

An allocation of almost €8 million will be provided to support grants for recharging infrastructure at the selected sites, with chargers set to be in place by the end of this year. EV drivers in Limerick set to benefit from three new high-powered recharging hubs

'With more chargers, more choice, and more support, we hope even more people will feel confident making the switch to electric,' he added.
