Greg Cote's Poll Dance: What's your level of support for Heat's Pat Riley? Vote now!

Yahooa day ago

Miami Heat president Pat Riley speaks to the media during his season-ending press conference at Kaseya Center on May 9, 2025, in Miami.
Note to readers: The Poll Dance and Hot Button Top 10 are taking next Sunday off for the long holiday weekend. See you back here with a new edition of each on July 13!
Pat Riley since joining the Miami Heat in 1995, first as head coach and later as club president, has drafted Dwayne Wade, promoted Erik Spoelstra, signed LeBron James, and overseen three NBA championships -- among other successes and accomplishments that over 30 years have made him a towering figure in South Florida sports history.

But he is not above criticism.
Now 80, Riley's Heat have not won it all since 2013, and the misses have outnumbered the hits lately in the whale-hunting category, most recently going after but failing to close a trade for Kevin Durant.
I would hope Riley might still have the broad faith and support of most Heat fans. But you also see and hear lots of game-has-passed-him-by rhetoric on social media.
So you be the judge, right here. Take our latest Poll Dance and vote for which option best reflects how you feel about Riley today.
Vote as many times as you'd like or until your fingers ache.

Nationals' bullpen sputters, then spirals in the seventh against Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. — For Eduardo Salazar, escape and catharsis were just a pitch away in the seventh inning Saturday. Twice. One more pitch past Los Angeles Angels rookie Christian Moore, and the Washington Nationals could have entered the final two frames with the score knotted. And after Moore turned on his fastball above the zone for the go-ahead run, Salazar still had a chance to get a pitch past Angels shortstop Kevin Newman that would have kept Washington in the game.

Galaxy play the Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw in the 104th California Clásico

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Marco Reus scored in the 70th minute and the LA Galaxy played the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night in the 104th edition of the California Clásico. LA (1-14-5) is unbeaten in its last eight road matches (Stanford Stadium & PayPal Park) across all competitions against San Jose (7-8-5) dating to June 26, 2021. San Jose native Beau Leroux opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a shot into the upper-right corner for his fourth of the season. He settled Mark-Anthony Kaye's cross with his left foot and curled in a shot with his right from the top of the 18-yard box. San Jose goalkeeper Daniel stopped an initial attempt in the 70th, but it bounced right back to Reus for an easy touch home. It was Reus' first game wearing the captain's armband. Daniel made several key saves. He came out of his area to deny Joseph Paintsil on a one-on-one opportunity in the 60th. He algo got a hand on Gabriel Pec's shot on a counterattack in the 88th. The Galaxy entered with just three of a possible 33 points on the road this season. San Jose announced the club sold 40,000 tickets for the game at Stanford Stadium. ___ AP soccer:

Trout hits tying homer and Newman adds 3-run shot in 7th as Angels beat Nationals

Mike Trout hit a tying homer that sparked a six-run seventh inning, Kevin Newman added a three-run shot and the Los Angeles Angels rolled to an 8-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night. Kyle Hendricks gave up one run in five innings and rookie Christian Moore delivered the go-ahead single with two outs in the seventh. Gustavo Campero also homered for the Angels. CJ Abrams went deep for the Nationals, and Michael Soroka pitched six innings of two-hit ball. Washington took a 2-1 lead in the seventh on Riley Adams' RBI single off Ryan Zeferjahn (5-1). Trout connected against Zach Brzykcy (0-1) leading off the bottom half for his 13th home run. Los Angeles then sent 11 more batters to the plate in the inning, with Taylor Ward (double), Jo Adell (single) and Moore contributing important hits. Newman, batting ninth, launched his first homer this season off Eduardo Salazar for a 6-2 lead. Luis Rengifo's double and Ward's bases-loaded walk made it 7-2. Campero homered in the eighth. The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the second when Ward was hit by a pitch and scored on Logan O'Hoppe's double-play grounder. The Nationals tied it in the fifth on Abrams' 12th homer. Soroka struck out five and walked one in a no-decision. Key moment Salazar struck out O'Hoppe and got Zach Neto to pop out with runners on first and third in the seventh and was one strike from escaping the jam when Moore hammered a 1-2 fastball above the zone for an RBI single and a 3-2 Angels lead. Key stat Soroka entered with a 3.49 ERA through five innings and a 22.85 ERA in the sixth. But after giving up Newman's leadoff single in the sixth, the right-hander started a 1-6-3 double play on Rengifo's grounder and got Nolan Schanuel to pop out to preserve a 1-all tie. Up next Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker (5-8, 4.59 ERA) opposes Angels right-hander Jack Kochanowicz (3-8, 5.49) in Sunday's series finale.
