Sánchez vows to uncover reasons behind massive Iberian power outage
MADRID — The reason behind the extensive blackouts in Spain and Portugal remained unclear on Tuesday, with some isolated disruptions persisting after the majority of power was restored.
One of the most significant blackouts in Europe grounded flights, paralysed train services, disrupted mobile communications, and caused ATMs to shut down across the Iberian Peninsula on Monday.
By 11 am CET on Tuesday, the Spanish electrical system was reported to be operating normally, according to electricity operator Red Eléctrica. The Portuguese grid operator REN confirmed that power had been restored to all 6.4 million customers.
As normalcy began to resume, Spanish authorities had not yet offered further clarification on why the country, with a population of 49 million, experienced a loss of 15 gigawatts—equivalent to 60% of its national demand—in just five seconds.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the government's priorities were to restore Spain's electrical system and to investigate the causes of the blackout to prevent a recurrence of such an event.
Eduardo Prieto, the director of services for system operations at Spain's electricity operator, reported two significant consecutive 'disconnection events' prior to the blackout on Monday. He indicated to reporters that further investigation is required.Spain's meteorological agency, AEMET, stated that it had not observed any 'unusual meteorological or atmospheric phenomena,' and no abrupt temperature changes were noted at its weather stations.Portugal's National Cybersecurity Centre confirmed that there was no evidence suggesting the outage was caused by a cyberattack. Additionally, Teresa Ribera, an executive vice president of the European Commission, dismissed the possibility of sabotage.The Spanish news agency EFE has reported that authorities are looking into five fatalities, including three individuals from the same family, which may be connected to the power outage.According to EFE, the three family members lost their lives in Galicia due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator, a woman in Valencia died due to issues with an oxygen supply device, and another individual perished in a fire ignited by a candle in Madrid.The Madrid Open tennis tournament resumed following a blackout that led to the postponement of 22 matches. A busy schedule on Tuesday saw second-ranked Iga Swiatek progress to the quarterfinals.At Spain's largest train stations, numerous travelers gathered on Tuesday to board trains or to reschedule their journeys. At Madrid's Atocha station, hundreds waited near screens for updates, with many having spent the night at the station, wrapped in blankets supplied by the Red Cross.As of 11 am on Tuesday, the subway services in Madrid were completely restored. Meanwhile, in Barcelona, the system was functioning normally; however, certain commuter trains remained suspended in the afternoon due to 'electrical instability,' as reported by Rodalies Catalunya on X.In various regions of Spain, commuter and mid-distance services continued to be either suspended or operating at reduced capacity.Emergency responders in Spain indicated that approximately 35,000 passengers were rescued on Monday after being stranded along railways and in underground stations.The blackout significantly disrupted transit systems, causing sports centers, train stations, and airports to serve as temporary shelters. — Euronews

Seven dead after migrant boat capsizes near Canary Islands
MADRID — Four women and three girls died on Wednesday when a small boat carrying migrants capsized while arriving to port in the Canary Islands, emergency services in Spain said. Spain's maritime rescue service, which located the boat some 9.6 kilometers from shore, said the boat tipped over as rescuers started removing children as it arrived at a dock on the island of El Hierro. Local media said the small boat appeared to be packed with more than 100 people. Spanish rescuers and members of the Red Cross were involved in a rescue operation, pulling several people out of the water. The Spanish archipelago located off Africa's western coast has for years been a main route for migrants trying to reach Europe. But it's also one of the world's most dangerous with the Spanish migrants' rights group Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) saying in a January report that more than 10,000 people had died last year trying to reach the archipelago. But a record number of migrants were more lucky, with authorities in the Canary Islands saying more than 43,000 people had arrived there in 2024. Several EU member countries have started to update their migration policies, just as migration also comes at the top of the European Council's agenda. In a letter to EU member states, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed speeding up the return of asylum seekers and opening detention centers in third countries, following the precedent set by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's controversial agreement with Albania. Meanwhile, the Spanish government announced last year the opening of an emergency reception centre at Ciudad Real airport to deal with asylum requests from irregular arrivals. Madrid Group Meets to Push for Two-State Solution
Spain's capital hosted a high-level meeting on Sunday that brought together Arab and European foreign ministers in a renewed push to support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The summit, convened under the so-called 'Madrid Group,' aimed to pressure Israel to halt its military campaign in Gaza, ensure unrestricted humanitarian access to the besieged enclave, and revive efforts toward the long-stalled two-state solution. Countries attending the conference included Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, Morocco, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Also taking part was the State of Palestine, which Spain formally recognized last year, a move other European countries, including France, are expected to follow as early as next month. The meeting also gathered foreign ministers from major European nations such as Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Norway, Iceland, Slovenia, and Malta. Brazil's foreign minister attended as well, saying upon arrival in Madrid that he was carrying a message from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in support of efforts to achieve a two-state solution. On his part, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez intensified diplomatic efforts in recent weeks ahead of Sunday's landmark meeting in Madrid, which for the first time brings together major European and Islamic countries under the 'Madrid Group' umbrella to deliver a strong message of support for a two-state solution and increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu and members of his government have lashed out at European leaders in recent days, accusing them of inciting violence against Jews following the killing of two Israeli embassy staff in Washington last week. France condemned Netanyahu's comments as 'outrageous.' Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived in Madrid on Saturday to take part in the expanded ministerial gathering on Gaza and the Madrid Group's wider efforts to address the situation in the Palestinian territories and push for an international ceasefire. In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the talks will focus on the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, international efforts to end the war, and the urgent need to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the enclave. The meeting will also discuss preparations for a high-level international conference on the two-state solution, scheduled to take place at the United Nations headquarters in New York next month, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, it added. Earlier, the ministry said the ministerial committee formed by the Arab-Islamic summit on Gaza - headed by Prince Faisal and including Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi - met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot to discuss global efforts to halt the Israeli military campaign. Abdelatty traveled to Madrid on Sunday to join the expanded ministerial meeting. Egypt's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that discussions will cover international efforts to end the war in Gaza, the deepening humanitarian crisis, and ways to ensure access for humanitarian aid. The talks will also explore building global support for recognizing Palestinian statehood and implementing the two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace in the Middle East. Sources familiar with the talks told Asharq Al-Awsat that Madrid, in parallel with its diplomatic push, is seeking to deliver humanitarian and food aid to Gaza by air or by establishing an 'EU-supervised humanitarian camp' in Rafah on the Egyptian border, proposals that continue to face resistance from Israel. Spain, which officially recognized the State of Palestine last year, is also working to submit a draft resolution to the United Nations General Assembly calling on the International Court of Justice to mandate Israel to allow unrestricted aid entry into Gaza.
